Fanatic, Racist and scammers

am Lille Jeanette, and I had a flight with Austrian airlines with a booking number of 38JLZ9 that departs on 14.05.2025 from Cairo international airport.

I went to the airport and had a bit overweight of my hand luggage. The check in employee told me to pay 100 Dollar for that overweight. I responded that I would throw some of that weight (the not needed things) and can depart.

While discussing, another Employee called Katie and she is claiming to be the manager of the whole Star Alliance in Egypt approached directly to me and told me that I will never be allowed to depart for the flight, which for me was not understandable at all this very offending behavior from her, if the problem is the overweight then I can throw things away or pay the 100 Dollar but nothing to prevent me from departing.

She was shouting and accusing me that I am arrogant because I have the American passport, however I did not say at all such a thing and was very friendly with the other employee that was helping me at the beginning of the check in process, Katie just saw my American passport from far away and came directly to me. On other hand Katie knows from my name that I am Christian as religion and she told me If I would be Muslim, she would accuse me of terrorism and put me in jail, I cannot understand how Austrian employee can be so racist!

Another employee told me that I can pay 50-dollar cash and then they can accept the overweight, I did not have the 50-dollar cash, and I offered to pay it by credit card but he refused and told me NO, ONLY CASH, and this employee refused to give me a receipt of the money or tag number of the luggage, so that it is a very clear bribe.

The situation has escalated, and after I confronted Katie to tell me a reason for her not letting me on the flight, she refused to tell me a reason (because of course there is no reason) and she called the national security to me, where the national security also could not find a reason for Katie not letting me to the fight.

Katie forced me to apologies to her and in a very humiliating way (forced me to lean my head down while apologizing), so that I can depart to my flight, otherwise I will not depart at all to any Star Alliance. Of course, I refused because there is no reason to apologize and specially with that very humiliating way that Katie forced me to do.

Katie claims that she called the Austrian airlines manager in Austria to preclude me from departing to any Star Alliance flights and also to avert me from entering the European union???? (of course insane what Katie thinks she can do)

After all that escalation, and time running for my flight to depart and Katie’s refusal, I lost consciousness completely and the national security called the medical assistance to me and did first aid until I got conscious again.

The consequences, that I missed my flight because of Katie’s refusal till the last moment and my flight was back and forth from Cairo to Vienna. I must book another flight, and I lost my appointment that was planned in my destination because of Katie’s behavior and on top my health that was on very high risk (close to death, dramatically high blood pressure that I got + very low blood sugar) when I lost my consciousness and that what the medical doctor in the airport told me.

I need an intensive investigation from your side regarding that problem and please look at the CCTV in the airport between 14:00 and 17:00 o’clock (GMT+3) on 14.05.2025 and inform me about your investigations’ results.

I want to emphasize that I was not allowed to depart on my planned flight and till his moment, I am still in Egypt, nonetheless, I received email yesterday from the Austrian airlines that my dropped-off baggage is checked-in with Tag number (0257584528) ???? This is totally illegal and against law, that someone drops off baggage under my name while I was not even allowed to check-in, I am not responsible for anything in the baggage with the Tag number mentioned.
1/Baggage with tag number (0257584528) doesn’t not belong to me and was dropped off by your employee in Egypt and I will sue the responsible person for such illegal and unlawful action. As I don’t know what that baggage include?????

2) The behavior from your manager in Egypt still must be regulated by the Austrian airlines not by personal behavior as she seems to be the top and no one above to control such racist and unprofessional behavior.

3) It is very racist to accuse someone to be terrorist only because of religion. Religion should be undisclosed information, not judgable.

4) The Austrian employees in Egypt have to stop bribing customers and be regulated by the Austrian airlines worldwide.

5) I need a compensation for the racist and humiliated behavior that I had in Egypt.

Horrible Service!!

I am writing to express my disappointment with the service we received during check-in for our flight from Vienna to Brussels on Jan 26, 2025 at 15:15. Out initial luggage weighted 25 kg, surpassing 23 kg limit, which we accepted without dispute. However, an issue arose with our hand luggage.
We were entitled to three pieces of hand luggage but carried only one weighing 10 kg. Your check in agent insisted that this exceeded the 8 kg limit per item. We attempted to clarify that our total luggage allowance is 24 kg, meaning our single piece was well within the combined limit and having only one piece instead of more which I think better for the aircraft. Unfortunately, the agent was unable to provide a clear explanation and insisted on a 60 euros excess weight fee, incorrectly applying the per limit as a per-person rule.
To resolve the matter, to not pay this amount to Austrian airlines, we purchased another hand luggage which cost less than that of course and redistributed the weight to make our big luggage at 23 kg and others within the limits. One hand luggage was 10 and the other became 6. This arrangement was also rejected. It was only after further re-organizing to bring one bag to 9 kg and another to 6. Although the 9 one was still not within the limit, she has decided to accept it this time??!!
This process was not only time consuming but also distressing, particularly as we were travelling with our baby!!!!!!!! This was our first and definitely the last for this airlines!!!!!!

Poor Planning and very little Support After Missed Connection at Vienna Airport

I flew with Austrian Airlines from Chisinau to Amsterdam on April 25th , with a short layover in Vienna. I was traveling with my two children and was given just 35 minutes to make a connection from a non-Schengen flight — not nearly enough time to get through passport control and security, especially as multiple flights landed at once, creating long lines and delays.

We arrived at the gate 'just two minutes after it closed', completely out of breath after running through the airport, and were told the missed connection was 'our fault'. We were rebooked for the next day, but Austrian refused to pay for the hotel, so we had to sleep at the Moxy Hotel at our own expense (€266.50).

To make things worse, that evening I received three SMS messages telling me we had been rebooked on a KLM flight the next morning — but online check-in didn’t work. When we got to the airport the next day, it turned out we were not booked on KLM at all, but back on Austrian.

This was a deeply frustrating and stressful experience, especially traveling with kids. Austrian Airlines’ decision to allow such a short connection time at Vienna Airport for non-Schengen arrivals is 'poorly planned and unrealistic'. Refusing to cover hotel costs after a situation that was clearly beyond our control only added insult to injury.

I contacted their customer service with all documentation — boarding passes, hotel invoice, and screenshots — and I am still expecting to be reimbursement. Sadly, I can’t recommend Austrian Airlines after this experience.

Completely awful experience

Completely awful experience. Never take their mid-range flights with transfers. They’ve effectively downgraded to a low-cost service—except you’re paying twice the price for the so-called “service.”

During the transfer, they did nothing to speed up the process. You still have to go through security checks, even if your connecting flight is about to close its gates (they simply ignored the fact that I was running late).

Also, Austrian Airlines couldn’t even park the plane by the gate; instead, a bus came to collect us, which caused further delay during the transfer.

If you want to avoid stress, just skip them and book with any low-cost airline—and grab yourself some food. You’ll have a much better experience.

Both Flights Delayed

Had a flight from Belgrade to Vienna in February and then another from Vienna to London (Heathrow). Both were delayed and kept us in the plane for hours. Not a great experience.

Extremely disappointing experience – poor service and no accountability

I recently flew with Austrian Airlines on a connecting trip from Basel to Chisinau via Vienna (OS 472 & OS 653) on April 8, 2025. Due to a delay on the first leg (OS 472), my family missed our connection and arrived nearly 8 hours late after being rerouted through Bucharest. We were traveling with our 3-year-old child, and the entire ordeal caused significant stress and disruption, including the cancellation of a medical appointment.

Despite requesting a direct alternative from Vienna to Chisinau, we were told no other option was available except a 3-flight route. Austrian Airlines provided minimal assistance in Vienna and nothing at all in Bucharest, where we waited 4 hours without any food or support.

To make matters worse, upon raising a complaint with them Case no. 2504-OS-05110, Austrian Airlines initially blamed a ground handling issue, then changed their story to "aircraft damage" without offering any credible documentation—just to avoid compensating under EC 261/2004. I have since escalated the matter to the APF for formal review.

This experience showed a total lack of transparency, accountability, and care for passengers, especially families traveling with young children. I expected much more from an airline associated with the Lufthansa Group.

I cannot recommend Austrian Airlines and will think twice before booking with them again.

I am deeply dissatisfied with the level…

I am deeply dissatisfied with the level of customer service provided, which has been consistently deteriorating over the years. During my recent interaction, I spoke with a representative named Natalie, whose behavior was entirely unprofessional — she was rude, dismissive, and even laughed at my concerns. Such conduct is completely unacceptable for someone working in customer support.

If there were alternative airlines operating the route I require, I would not choose to fly with this company again. It is disappointing to see how the overall quality of service continues to decline. I sincerely sympathize with the colleagues who must work alongside individuals demonstrating such a lack of professionalism.

Double book the bassinet, poor service, small planes

I recently traveled with Austrian airline from London to Tehran and back, and I must express my disappointment with multiple aspects of the service.

Despite booking a bassinet for our 8-month-old baby, wine and my wife seated separately due to what the flight attendants described as a double booking mistake. This was particularly frustrating as the flight was not full, and it made traveling with a baby much more challenging for my wife and me.

On our return flight from Tehran to Vienna, which lasted over four hours, we were shocked to find ourselves on a very small plane. The only meal provided was a cold sandwich, which felt inadequate given the ticket price we paid. The cost of the tickets was almost comparable to airlines like Emirates and Etihad, yet the service and comfort were far below expectations.

To top it all off, one of our luggage pieces was missing upon our arrival back in London from Vienna. This added to an already frustrating experience.

Overall, the poor service, small planes, and overpriced tickets have left me dissatisfied.

Austrian refused to refund fee for service not provided

After I paid a $53 fee to pick an isle Economy class seat on a flight to Vienna I found myself sitting next to a 400lb giant, whose body was seriously squeezing mine. I was forced to move to the only available (middle) seat on that flight. Austrian refused to refund the extra fee that I paid for a service not provided. Enough said.

The plane was delay for 45minutes in…

The plane was delay for 45minutes in total to arrive from Shanghai to Vienna. We nearly miss our flight if anymore delay, but thankful made it with 5 mins before gate closed. Also our luggage didn’t arrive with us which was a shock. Definitely will not be taking this airline anymore! Never experience such a bad airline.

Complete flop

Customer service is a total flop from start to finish.

Forced smiles, condescending looks, and even right-in-your-face rudeness from the staff. "Take it yourself" were the words used by one flight attendant when she was handing out drinks on the plane.

Another time, with coffee only being served in the back of the plane, I found myself dancing on my feet with hot coffee in one hand and milk and sugar in the other hand. To top that, one staff member literally closed the curtain right in my face after her colleague handed out the coffee.

To top it all, our three bags are missing. And same here, nothing short of a mess. It's all about doing the bare minimum. Even by European standards Austrian Airlines ranks remarkably low.

I liked this Airlines before

I liked this Airlines before, bur their new strange strategy of earning money is just lame. At a recent flight from Paris to Vienna, a lady at the gate was extremely rude with the passengers and several times ensisted on me to pay for my 1.5 kg luggage "overweight". However I told her several times that I will repack, I have space in my purse. And my hand luggage trolley perfectly fits into this luggage fitting bar. While I was repacking, she tried to scam other passengers. And it was actually crazy how people were treated like they were her personal enemies. I felt like she just came out of a prison job and started to work for Austrian Airlines. She really spoiled my mood and other passengers were also shocked and disoriented by her hustle and rude speeches.

Shocking 😳

Shocking 😳
Got a flying Sofia Bangkok few weeks ago and after boarding fall asleep, after wake up turns out I missed dinner and was told that they have left some crackers and water, but was refused to have more than 1 cup of water with the ridiculous excuse that there isn't enough water on board and they need to leave for the other passengers and the next crew....
Definitely won't be using this airline again.

They simply don't care...

I spent several hours to rebook a flight. Online the process didn't work. After long chat sessions I finally had an alternative. In order to pay they called me more than 10 times with pure silence on the other end before I finally spoke to someone from customer service. I thought everything was sorted only to find out the next day that they had cancelled my booking!

I had to start the process again, nothing was offered from their side to compensate for their mistakes.

Denied Boarding, Discriminatory Treatment, and Poor Customer Service: EMAIL mentioned on website DOES NOT EXIST

UPDATE BELOW!
We were denied boarding on our Austrian Airlines flight to Milan, despite having valid Schengen single-entry visas and only transiting through Vienna — not entering Austria. Strangely, other passengers with similar visa condition were allowed to board, highlighting clear inconsistency and discrimination. To make matters worse, the agent questioned why we didn’t book with Turkish Airlines instead of offering any help or empathy. Our round-trip tickets were ruined, and the entire experience was frustrating and unfair.

Austrian Airlines should clarify its transit policies and train staff to handle such situations with professionalism and compassion.

Email address they communicated on their "Contact us" page of website that is office[at]austrian[dot]com DOES NOT exist and no email delivers there! Surprising for a big airline!!!

when communicating online support service, it says:
"I'm sorry, it seems like we are having some technical turbulences. Should I try to reconnect you with my human colleagues?" and when select "Yes, try again", no reply given! Very Unbelievable!

UPDATE: Although Austrian Airlines has not accepted the fault of their agent and consequently refused any compensation, the ticket price was refunded "as a gesture of goodwill" (their reason for refund). However, I think we deserve a refund plus compensation and acceptance of their mistake but I appreciate their taking responsibility to consider our problem. So, I am changing my rate from 1 to 3 (I did not rate 4 because it took long to refund ~4 weeks).
