Fantastic car rental
Fantastic car rental! 5-star service, no hidden fees or tricks. The car was clean and ran perfectly – a real pleasure to drive. Highly recommend!
Very good company - Caen
Everything was very good, we rent a car for 2 days in Caen, Normandy, bought full insurance. No problem with communication in english, everybody from staff was very polite and helpful. I recommend to vacuum car before returning it, because they can charge you extra for returning it with significant dirt :)
Terrible experience with AVIS Ajaccio – Unprofessional and disappointing
We had a very disappointing experience when trying to pick up our rental car from AVIS Ajaccio. We had carefully selected a car with the clear condition that the deposit would be €200. However, upon arrival at the AVIS counter, we were told that the required deposit was actually €700. The staff threatened to cancel our booking if we didn’t comply.
When we asked to speak to a manager, we were told to wait for Laila, the shift supervisor. Despite the AVIS office being no more than 100 meters from the airport, we had to wait over 20 minutes for her to arrive. When she finally showed up, manager Laila simply blamed the issue on Booking.com and made it clear that they had no intention of helping us, again threatening to cancel our reservation.
The entire process took over an hour of our time, with staff openly discussing us in front of other customers, showing a complete lack of professionalism and basic customer service standards.
Moreover, our original reservation was for a car with automatic transmission, but they first tried to give us a manual. Eventually, we received a car with a damaged bumper.
This level of rudeness, disorganisation, and disregard for the customer is absolutely unacceptable, especially from a company with an international reputation like AVIS. We expected far better and will seriously reconsider renting from AVIS in the future.
Poor customer service when broken down
The collection at Nice was excellent. As a preferred member straight upstairs and car is waiting.
1 hour into our journey we had a breakdown on the motorway. Finally got through to Avis but they didn’t recognise my rental agreement number or registration. Told to dial another number. They arranged for us to be taken off the motorway. No idea where we were going. Arrived at a compound and told to wait. After numerous calls to Avis finally they arranged a taxi to Avignon office pre paid to 132 Euros.
We had to pay 254 Euros direct to the recovery company then an additional 43 Euros for the taxi. 9 hours later we reached our destination.
Called customer service number and finally gave up. Each time waiting for over 45 minutes.
The car only had 400Km on the clock.
I have now sent a claim to Avis to cover MY costs for their car. Not hopeful of a reply.
They should give you an emergency number card or have it stuck to the visor.
Very poor customer service when really needed.
They wrongfully charged me on previous…
They wrongfully charged me on previous minor damages on the car resulting at about 500 euro. There wan no one at the pick up from the company to check previous damages. Worst ever company and service, never had any problems before. Furthermore i have been emailing them and apart from the automated messages that they received my emails they never responded.
Extremely Disappointed – No Refund, No Response
I had a very disappointing experience with Avis at Marseille Airport.
We booked a car for around €800, but due to a flight delay, we arrived later the same day. Upon arrival, the price had suddenly increased to €3,716, a nearly 5x jump without prior notice. This was completely unreasonable and unmanageable, so we had no choice but to cancel.
The Avis agent on site (code 40410) confirmed the cancellation in writing and assured us we would be refunded. I have now contacted Avis multiple times over more than a week, attaching the signed confirmation, and have received no response at all.
We followed all procedures, arrived on the day of the booking, and had documentation from Avis staff. Yet, Avis has kept our money and is ignoring all communication.
This level of customer service is unacceptable. If I do not receive a response soon, I will be pursuing legal action and reporting this to consumer protection authorities.
Think twice before booking with Avis. If anything goes wrong, you may be left with no support, no accountability, and no refund.
I booked a rental car from the UK from…the Avis Web site
I booked a rental car from the UK from Avis at Nice airport at today’s date 5th July.
We were delayed flying to Nice from Edinburgh By nearly 4hours arriving at our hotel about 2.00am. My wife who has a heart condition took unwell and we wanted to go home Monday. We could not cancel the booking by phone and decided to Taxi to the Avis office at the airport. The car rental office was jam packed with people waiting for cars. I eventually reached the agents desk explained the situation who seemed keen to help. He said it would take too long to do the cancellation at his desk and gave me the telephone number to call the Head Booking Office and it would be quicker.
I left the Avis office and returned to the hotel and called the number given.
It was the number for Booking. Com not the Avis Head Office…so my booking was not cancelled before 14.30 as required by booking conditions… So I am now checking my credit card to see if they have lifted my cash.
The Avis office at Nice seems really unhelpful and I will see how they respond to my claim.
The Agent I suspect palmed me off as he could not be bothered as the office was overwhelmed with people. Nice!
Booking ref. 36159557GB0
Worst branch in the work I was charged 426€ unjustified !!
I was charged 200€ one day extra when i returned the car on time and 220€ for a damage that existed
Only when complained to Avis HQ i got my refund
Stay away from this branch. Terrible experience and worse customer service
Worst experience
Worst experience. Long queue and no people working. Had Quick pass but still more than an hour. No queue at goldcar and hertz.
Also gave us the wrong size car
Avoid Avis Morlaix
I rented a car from the chaotic Morlaix office. Having prepaid the car they asked for a 1000 euro deposit.
Then they reduced it to 500 euro. After the rental they changed the terms of the contract which in most countries other than North Korea and Israel is illegal.
Avis Morlaix will try everything to cheat you.
Absolutely unacceptable service from AVIS Geneva French Sector.
I had a confirmed and prepaid booking (292.28€) for a car rental on 29 May 2025 at 11:00 AM. Upon arrival, I was told no car was available, and that I could cancel and would receive a full refund within 24 hours. That was the only solution offered — no apology, no alternative vehicle, nothing.
It’s now been weeks, and I still have not received my refund. Reaching AVIS customer service has been exhausting, with no resolution.
This is more than poor service — it’s disrespectful and dishonest. AVIS took my money, failed to deliver the service, and is now delaying a rightful refund.
I will never trust AVIS again and strongly advise others to avoid this agency. A company of this size should have better systems and integrity.
Driving car without contract. Manager AWOL
Given a car without a contract because the manager at Gard du Nord Paris wasn’t there on the day.. suggested by USA customer service to swap it out at 9am Tours airport. 1.5 hour drive. The Avis there is only open when there a flights. Which the USA customer didn’t know. The Avis people kept saying ‘but you have no contract’. To which I said ‘I know!’. They had trouble getting hold of the manager at Gard du Nord also to try to sort it out. To be clear, Avis in France is a franchise. And it shows.
Hidden charges (37% additional cost at collection)
Hidden charges. Dishonest and Opaque. Paid in advance for a car including all the insurance. But when we collect they add: location charge, airport charge, border charge, admin charge, processing charge and cost goes up by an additional 37%. When queried they said, all hire car firms do this, you can go an check with other firms first of you like? the contract you have to sign to accept all this bears no resemblance to the booking you made and the prices on the website when you booked. I emailed afterwards to ask how the 2 related and never got a reply.
Avoid
⸻
Avoid this company — very poor customer service
I strongly advise against using this company. There is essentially no real customer support. If you try to reach out via email or phone, you will only receive repetitive, generic responses from an AI system, with no actual human follow-up or resolution.
Even when issues are clearly explained, they are met with automated replies that fail to address the specifics of your case. This lack of accountability and personal service makes the entire experience frustrating and disappointing.
If you value proper communication and responsiveness, this company is unfortunately not the right choice.
Never again
Never again. i had to modify a booking to return the car to a different location and paid more than the original cost of the rental for the privilege. Fortunately there are plenty of more customer-friendly car rental companies
Assaulted by employee
Upon arrival at the Avis counter at Toulouse Airport after a long flight, I experienced a discrepancy with my prepaid booking made through booking.com. I was charged again for the rental and the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), and the total was significantly higher than my original booking.
I attempted to contact Avis multiple times over five days via phone to resolve this, but experienced issues with the phone lines. I was able to obtain a refund for one of the duplicate CDW charges through booking.com.
Additionally, the vehicle provided was a different make and model (MG) than what I had reserved. While I was told it was the same price, the final charge reflected a substantial increase.
Upon returning the vehicle approximately two weeks later, I discussed these issues with a parking lot attendant. This interaction became confrontational. Following this, an incident occurred where the attendant physically assaulted me. I have photographic evidence of this incident. I reported this to a counter representative inside the rental office. This representative handled the situation professionally.
While one staff member addressed the issue professionally, my overall experience with Avis at the Toulouse Airport was unsatisfactory due to the incorrect charges, the change in vehicle, the difficulty in contacting customer service, and the subsequent unprofessional and concerning behavior of one of the employees.
Stay away from Avis at the Toulouse airport unless you don't mind being cheated
I booked with AVIS months ago and paid in full at that time with a booking.com "rental voucher." Upon arrival at AVIS after an all night flight and 36 hours without sleep, Avis double-charged me at the counter for the rental and the CDW, in full, only it was way more expensive (by more than 50%). I've tried several times a day for 5 days to reach AVIS by phone, but one number has no service, and on another number they just pick up and immediately hang up again, and at a third number they pick up, but a recording says nobody can take the call and it hangs up again. I've also been speaking to booking.com, and I managed to get a refund for one of the two identical CDW premiums. But booking.com says I can't hand the case over to them until after my rental in 10 days. Btw, Avis also changed my reserved rental to a higher class of car (a crappy, beat up MG) while telling me it was the same price as my reservation, but it was a 50% higher (double) charge.
In short, don't trust Avis at the Toulouse airport in France. They've proven to me that they lie. They cheat in business. They don't answer their phones, showing they don't care about after-service to the customer. Only a horrible, horrible organization would make this the situation for visitors. I expected to love France from the beginning, but these past five days have been nothing but failed attempts at contacting AVIS. Frustrating. Time consuming. Unnecessarily being charged twice (but $1500+ the second time!), and therefore bouncing other payments and being on the hook for NSF fees.
In my experience, Avis will lie. They'll cheat. They'll literally rob you and make it impossible to question them about it. I would advise everybody to avoid AVIS. That's MY "avis" too you.
And Avis France, this manner of business is unsatisfactory. I encourage you to properly train your airport staff. Unless you already have, in which case the problem is not the airport location, but also of AVIS France. Me? I'll never again do business with them, and I'll make warning people about AVIS France my special project. I'll also be reimbursed the double+ charges. That's my promise to myself, because they've already impacted my credit rating by causing me NSFs due to the double+ charge.
Beware.
Avis never again
I rent a car for one day from Avis Disneyland on Saturday April 12, at 11:13, i returned the car at 11:10 on Sunday , but as the agency only opens at 13:00, i was told by the agent to leave the car key in Avis box in the parking & to leave the parking ticket inside the car, to confirm the time of return, so i did as he said.
When i received my monthly bank report , i was shocked because i found that they charged me 2 days instead of one, i contacted the customer service by email explaining what happened & asking why, i got a reply that I should proof when i returned the car, so i sent them my hotel bill with the exact check out time from hotel near Disneyland & my hotel bill with exact check in time in my hotel in Paris, that’s the only proof that i have, i didn’t expect that a big name company like Avis , could be so bad to steal my money.
I asked the customer service many times to give me a proof that i returned the car 14:22 , as they said, for example, the parking ticket left in the car ( as the agent said to me) , or cctv images from the parking, but they denied, saying that it’s me who should give them the proof of my side.
It’s a scam company, not serious, i am always traveling, visiting many countries, renting cars everywhere, this is my first time to have this kind of situation, my sadness is that i just my right to get my money back, but they don’t accept my proof, treating me like a liar or a thief.
I sent them the proof that i have, but they don’t want to send me a proof of what they charged me more money.
Please take care, don’t use this agency, they will get your money anyway.
WARNING - €1200 for existing scratch in a wreck of a rental car
We rented a Fiat 500 from Avis at Nice Airport. The car they gave us was covered in scratches, dents and had been side-swiped. We took a video of all the damage, but when we returned the car they claimed there was an additional scratch and charged us €1200. WARNING - stay with the car when they check it, they told us not to as there was a big queue.
