Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 913 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People are extremely frustrated with excessively long phone wait times, automated systems that constantly fail to connect, and unhelpful customer support when trying to resolve critical payment and account issues. Consumers frequently deal with delayed deposits, unexpected transaction holds, and sudden account closures without proper advance notice. Though some customers encountered severe banking obstacles, a few reviewers were happy with specific branch staff who provided professional, attentive, and welcoming assistance. These positive interactions successfully resolved urgent matters and made certain branch visits smooth and genuinely reassuring despite widespread systemic frustrations.

Spent 38 minutes on hold today so my account could be fully activated. I was told via their website they needed to verify suspicious activity on my account. Using the language suspicious activity of course made me call. That was a lie. There was no suspicious activity. The rep said oh they are talking about fraud. So then all the rep did was send me a 6 digit code that I verified and she fully opened it And unbelieveable waste of my time.

Denied access to MY MONEY after building hospital in 100+ degree heat for 12 hours.

It just comes down to not being good human beings at this company. The useless suits running the company, the useless office workers contributing nothing to society. I build hospitals for 12 hours a day in 100+ degree heat, and this company REFUSED to let me use MY card, remove MY cash from MY account, get food/water/ or gas, when I needed it most, at the worst point of my life. I was refused access to MY funds/account/card/cash. I build hospitals for the world, you withhold MY money from me so that I can't even take care of my body after a long day working outside. Every single useless, soft rodent running around any of your offices should be ashamed of the human beings you each choose to be. Have some honor and contribute something positive to the world. This company is in control of how many trillions. Disgusting. You are what's wrong with this world, do not confuse yourself.

The worst

The worst. I was robbed in Colombia. They initially gave a credit back, after a month when I was in the jungle staying in a nice hotel my account was overdrawn because they took the credit back. I couldn’t pay for hotel and went to jail. Every day I had to deal with rude customer service on their FB page. False promises. Never got my money back.
I’ve had nothing but trouble with this back. I have overdraft protection yet they approving purchases and end up with negative balance. Can’t stand this bank!

De-banked by Bofa after 27 years!

After 27 years of doing business with this bank, they closed my account suddenly and without prior notice - They de-banked me! At the time, this was the only bank at which I had an account. They never gave me a reason; but, I suspect it was because of a lot of money movement into and out of my account, including international wire transfers, Zelle payments, etc. ALL such transactions were legal and legitimate; but, they labeled my account risky. I filed a complaint with CFPB, and the bank's response was even though they found nothing wrong in any my transaction, they decided to close my account and prohibit me from opening new accounts. This bank is run by a bunch of morons & a-holes. They don't deserve to stay in business. Take your business elsewhere!

Worst customer service ever

Worst customer service ever! I have had an account with them for more than 20 years and I am so disappointed with the repeatedly awful customer support and policies that I never want to deal with them again. I will never recommend them to anyone and am going to start shopping for a new bank for all my banking needs going forward ASAP.

I'm shocked at Bank of America - 30 year relationship down the drain

UPDATE: Bank of America repeatedly asked me for documentation for my 4part-claim. I provided it no less than 8 times. Electronic copies - 4. Hard copies by mail: 4
Today I got off the phone with a rep who was trying to explain why my claim (one of them) was denied. SHE WAS NEVER GIVEN THE DOCUMENTATION. After searching for it, and finding it.. she re-opened my claim.
This is not professional banking.

I'm shocked. Bank of America has been my bank for 30 years. But when I had a significant dispute this past month, they sided with a crook.

I had hired an embedded engineer on Upwork, to do highly sophisticated designs for a utility patent. After billing me thousands, I finally started to take a close look at the fact that I was receiving from him nothing but.. "I did this.. and I did that'.. and commentary on 'prior art', and the names of technical work such as 'sensor fusion logic'.. but no actual work. Nothing. When I asked the man for it his astonishing reply was 'Give me a couple of days'. Here he had just billed me for 5 weeks of highly technical work,.. but needed a 'few days' to prepare something to show me. But my bank sided with Upwork platform .. because they were able to show any real work? NO. Because over the course of working with the engineer, he'd text me.. 'I did this today, and I did that today'. And I'd say 'Great to hear'. And this - my response to him' was used as 'evidence that I was satisfied with his work'. And Bank of American sustained the crooked platform 'Upwork' that has no system in place to protect you, will answer you only in anonymous emails, will give you no phone number to discuss a problem even with seven thousand dollars hanging in the balance.. Because the banks get to keep their money. It's a disgrace. A 30 year relationship with this bank.. and they threw it away because I told a crook.. 'Sounds great'. I never did see what he said he was working on. And anything he sent to Upwork during my dispute - to prove that he did any work.. was in that short period after he'd already billed me for 5 weeks with no technical data to show for it. He put that together in just days, and the bank swallowed the lie - lock stock and barrel.. and left me to hold the bag.

***BEWARE***

***BEWARE***. If you are thinking about or on the fence about getting the Alaska Airlines Atmos credit card, think twice about it. This company is closing these accounts on people left and right without any warning. Great payment history, time loyalty, doesn’t matter, they don’t care. In addition, when they do, they won’t refund recent annual fee charges, and makes your companion certificates useless. I am still holding onto hope that Alaska will eventually move to a higher quality institution. The reviews, especially with the BBB speak for themselves.

My experience with Bank of America has…

My experience with Bank of America has been extremely disappointing and frustrating. I became a customer expecting basic respect, transparency, and protection, but unfortunately, I often felt that the bank’s policies work against its own customers rather than for them.

Many Bank of America ATMs still do not have NFC/contactless terminals, which is inconvenient in today’s world when most financial services are moving toward faster and safer technology.

What disappointed me the most was the lack of customer protection during payment disputes. I had several disputes regarding credit card charges for services that were never provided, and the bank did not support me or properly protect my rights as a customer. On only one occasion, the bank helped resolve a dispute involving a debit card transaction under $100. Overall, I felt that my concerns were not taken seriously.

Another major issue is the bank’s ability to place holds on transfers, even when the customer confirms that the transaction was authorized. Payments can be delayed, restricted, or even canceled without a clear explanation. This creates stress and uncertainty for customers who need access to their own money.

Based on my personal experience, I have often felt that the bank prefers to make important decisions quietly, without proper communication or transparency with the customer. This type of approach does not help build trust or create a strong relationship between the bank and its clients. A financial institution should work together with its customers, explain decisions clearly, and provide confidence that their interests are being respected.

The most frustrating part is the feeling that customers have very little control. The bank can open accounts, close accounts, restrict transactions, and make important decisions without providing meaningful explanations. When a customer wants to close an account, it cannot always be done at a local branch and instead requires calling a hotline and waiting close to an hour.

A bank should be built on trust, respect, and partnership with its customers. Unfortunately, my experience has been the opposite. I hope Bank of America listens to customer feedback and improves transparency, dispute resolution, and the overall customer experience. Customers are not just account numbers — they are people who deserve fairness, communication, and respect.

Ongoing problems with fradulent claims and incompetence.

I have had to replace my card twice in the last three months. The last fraud charge involved two charges they sent me a letter saying the issue was resolved and the charges were never posted to my account. I just went to pay my bill and saw the charges had indeed been posted to my account. They are now saying that to address the issue which they claim I am liable for I need to close the account again (and all the work involved with automatic payments) and start the process all over. I will be cancelling my card.

Switching to Truist after 20 years. BofA is the Worst!

I’ve been a customer with BofA for over 20 years. Received a legit payment from a pension plan and they initially said a partial hold would be done and then I get notification a full hold for 10 or more days is being placed. The customer service was bad and they denied Ty escalation to release partial. Once released I’ll be going to Truist Bank. Bank of America will not get another dime of my money.

Customer service is non existent

Customer service is non existent. You’re either going to be directed to AI on the app or remain on hold for a ridiculous amount of time. I was on hold for 50 minutes. No option to get a call back. No one to check on the customer to say anything. Same with the branch on the corner of 72nd street and 1st Ave. there was a manager on duty I told him the reason for my visit and showed how long I had been on hold with no assistance what so ever he had me sit and wait while he did absolutely nothing . No customers for the first 30 minute wait and still after all of this no help with all of the issues I had with my account. Staff could care less and it stems from management

As a business customer

As a business customer, I haven't been able to resolve this issue for three weeks, so I'm going to close my business account here. I called customer support three times because I couldn't receive an ACH transfer. I simply can't get money deposited into my business account, and I have no idea how to run my business with this bank. It's just awful. Several test transfers were made, followed by larger amounts, but nothing came through. All the account numbers are correct. I've called customer support three times, and today I went to the bank in person. While customer support at least tried to help in some way, the bank staff didn't even try to assist me. I don't recommend using Bank of America for business. I’m just going to close my business account here and open one at another bank with better terms.

Everything is wrong about the IVR of…

Everything is wrong about the IVR of Bank of America. With additional AI implementation I can never get a live agent. Even if I get one after a long wait, that person almost always has to transfer to another person sitting somewhere in the world.

Every time I have to get something done at BoFA, whether it is simply to enable a digital wallet on your phone, or to get clarification on a charge - just anything, it is terrible. The only thing that works is making payment on the phone !

I also hasten to add that the staff managing customer services are always polite and good and try their best. Someone at the top who puts these process in place is all messed up.
