Best turbos best place to 'burn' your money and time

My Volvo V40 has turbo issues, evident from engine error code and high oil consumption. My local garage mechanic suggested to take it to a turbo expert for a fix. Called best turbos, excellent response and provided shorter lead time. There were good follow-ups in the meanwhile. Was very impressed with with the service at the beginning. When I listed the diagnostics done already, I was told a free diagnostic will be done on thier side to confirm the issue and the repair will start only after checking in with me. All good, so far. Left my car with them, told the diagnostics will take 5h, so started a 40 mile journey back home. Got a call back in the evening, giving me a shock saying my car has 'twin turbo' Additionally, the fault is not apparent, so wanted to do a 'bench test', stripping the turbo to components for further investigation. At this point, I was quoted 2x1600= £3200 for investigation and repair. Its a point of no return.
I got suspicious and called off the repair. Immediately slapped with a £80 charge for diagnostics, which was originally told free. The diagnostic gave me no new information that I didn't know already because it's a OBD check (which took them 5h).
Day 2 went for collecting my car, confronted them on the twin turbo claim. They argued that's what the system said, when I asked for the turbo serial number, they admitted it's a single turbo but argued it's the software fault and not theirs. I empathize with other reviewers, folks in best turbo like to argue and not admitting the fault. All this time didn't even bother to physically look under the bonnet to see what's wrong or even knowing the turbo type. I was frustrated, obviously, but kept my calm and made logical debate which was criticized sharply as showing attitude. I wasted 2 full days commuting 40 miles each trip to the garage and spent £80 for absolute nothing, while they couldn't even tolerate my basic questions.
The suffering did not stop there, on returning home, I found out the engine cover was missing. Contacted them, didn't recieve the swift response this time. Went in person to collect the cover. In summary, did 240 miles trip across 3 days, spent £80 and wasted 3 days for nothing. After reading other reviews, I'm feeling fortunate and made the right call.

We’re disappointed to read this review, as it presents a misleading and inaccurate account of the situation. For clarity, we would like to address the key points:

Diagnostic Charge (£80):
The £80 diagnostic fee was clearly communicated and agreed to on three separate occasions—during the initial phone call (recorded), within the written disclaimer, and again at vehicle drop-off. You also signed to confirm acceptance, so suggesting this was unexpected is simply incorrect.

Diagnostics & Process:
Our diagnostics are not limited to a basic OBD scan. Following initial checks, a bench test was recommended to properly identify the internal cause of the fault. This is standard industry practice. The cost discussed was not an added charge, but part of the overall repair should you choose to proceed.

Turbo Identification:
At the diagnostic stage, the system indicated a twin turbo configuration. To physically confirm and provide an exact serial number requires removal of the turbo, which is additional labour and not included in standard diagnostics. This was explained at the time.

Repair Decision:
You clearly stated during our conversation that the repair cost—even for a single turbo—was more than you were willing to pay, and that is why you chose not to proceed. It was not due to any lack of clarity from our side.

Vehicle Inspection:
The claim that no physical inspection was carried out is incorrect. The engine cover was removed during inspection, which directly contradicts this statement.

Engine Cover:
The engine cover was kept safely and returned to you upon collection, with no issue.

Conduct Towards Staff:
We must also address that your tone and behaviour towards our colleague were unacceptable. While we remained professional throughout, the interaction from your side fell well below the standard of mutual respect we expect.

We take pride in being transparent and professional, and we stand firmly by the service and communication provided.

Kind Regards

Had been to two other garages- before taking my car here- where they diagnosed the boost pipe and turbo, both of which were changed and my car is great now. Rajne on customer services kept me updated with regular communication and was very friendly and extremely professional. Would highly recommend this specialist garage and am so pleased to have my car working beautifully again.

Called them twice to make sure they had my turbo in stock i was told by a member of staff that they have 2 of these units in stock, called again in the evening to arrange a collection for the morning, my guy turns up there only to be told they got none, on top of that they feed you rubbish like we sold one at 5 pm and the other at 5;30pm, maybe true if the turbo was for a popular model i was fitting one on a fiat qubo 1.3 d. counter staff need to be educated and bought up to speed.
Your member of staff did not say i had to reserve the unit otherwise i would of done!!! the other owners were much more helpful and understanding

Good afternoon,
Thank you for your feedback. As a major supplier, our stock moves constantly, and availability can change multiple times throughout the day. We always recommend placing a payment or deposit to reserve items, especially high-demand parts like turbochargers. Unfortunately, in this case, no payment or deposit was made, so the item could not be held.

We’d also like to clarify that this turbocharger is not only for the Fiat Qubo 1.3 D but also fits several other models, including Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Vauxhall vehicles. Our team strives to provide accurate information, and we take reports of rudeness seriously; however, respectful communication ensures we can assist efficiently.

We hope this clarifies the situation and helps future customers.
Kind regards

Fantastic car garage - Highly Recommend

I can’t recommend Best Turbos in Oldbury highly enough. My car needed a turbo replacement, and from the very start they stood out with a competitive quote, clear communication, and a quick booking process. The team was incredibly thorough with the work — they provided detailed video footage and a full breakdown of the replacement, as well as the fault diagnosis, which gave me complete confidence in the job they were doing.

Even after the turbo replacement, my car developed other unrelated issues, and I’ve been back and forth while those were investigated. Throughout all of it, the team at Best Turbos have been nothing short of fantastic. Their willingness to help, their patience, and their genuine care for their customers really sets them apart.

Communication has been easy every step of the way, and the whole team is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. It’s clear they really want the best for their customers.

Although I have to travel quite a distance to get to Best Turbos, I will be doing it again in the future for any work I need going forward.

Hello Kerrie Strickland

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we appreciate all forms of genuine feedback.

However, you have left a few key details on the situation which is swaying the narrative. Allow me to correct that for you.

We sold a pair of turbochargers to MNS Motors on the 13th September 2024. We received them back under warranty on the 7th October as you claimed they were faulty and were passing oil. There were very, very obvious physical damages to the inlet side of the turbocharger. However, our procedures are to test all turbochargers, no matter the condition, to see how we can help.

Our suspicions were confirmed, and the damage on the inlet side of the turbocharger was caused by foreign object damage. We sent over all images and videos from our testing, with a detailed report on why the turbos had failed and what could potentially be causing this. You disagreed with the reason being a fault on the vehicle, despite knowing that these parts cannot just combust in the way that they had and there would need to be a reason behind these specific types of damages.

On the invoice you receive when purchasing a turbo from us it states the following "THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER FAILURE REASONED BY: OIL CONTAMINATION, OVERSPEEDING, POWER REMAPPING, INSUFFICIENT LUBRICATION, FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE", however as an act of goodwill there was only a charge covering the parts that neeeded replacing. We could not cover it under warranty as the fault was not on our end.

We received a message from you on the 19th November requesting a call-back from a manager as you had an issue with the turbos again. We asked you if you had the previous issue addressed. Your tone over message was that of a victim complex, we kept offering solutions and you responded saying that no one was listening to you and we kept going round in circles.

When you did speak to our members of staff you had been incredibly hostile and rude, swearing and calling us names. From one garage to another, this is no way to do business and I believe you know that.

A manager did try to call you on the 6th December, however you did not answer. You then accused us of not making contact, not acknowledging all the messages we had sent, as well as the call you didn't pick up.

Management have decided that, based on your behaviour towards us through message and on the phone, that all conversations with you must be kept written. You are more than welcome to send the turbos when you are able to, or we can provide our top quality turbocharger supply and fit service if you wish to send the Range Rover, down as these are the vehicles we specialise in.

Good afternoon Stuart,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We understand how frustrating this situation must be for you. We are uncertain whether the frustration you’ve encountered stems from our response or the ongoing condition of your vehicle, but we noticed that after our reply to your Google review, you also posted a review on Trustpilot.
Let me explain again:

I have reviewed our system and found additional details regarding your Vauxhall Vivaro. The vehicle was dropped off on Tuesday last week, and the symptoms reported by your driver included a lack of power, engine management light, white smoke, oil loss, and noise. Upon inspection, we identified several fault codes that were impacting vehicle performance, specifically related to the engine boost condition.

Additionally, we found a tapping noise from or under the injectors, a potential whining noise from the steering pump, water pump, or one of the pulleys, which could indicate that the turbocharger is potentially seized. My colleague spoke with you over the phone and strongly recommended addressing the other issues first before proceeding with any turbocharger repairs, as these might affect overall vehicle performance. Once those issues are resolved, we advised returning for turbocharger supply and fitting services if still required.

To provide you with a rough estimate, we supplied a worst-case scenario quotation for the turbocharger service, which includes a 24-month warranty on parts and labour, as well as an engine service comprising air filter, oil filter, and engine oil change.

We were surprised by your 1-star review, as we made every effort to highlight the potential issues and offer the most suitable solution for your vehicle. We are pleased to hear that a simple sensor change resolved the immediate issue. However, we strongly recommend addressing the other outstanding concerns, as they could lead to more serious engine damage in the future.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Professional and friendly.

I called these guys because the turbo in my Vivaro died. They booked me in on a Tuesday and I brought the van in on Monday evening. I was told it would take 4-6 business days so I was ready for being without my van for a while. On Thursday morning I got a call to tell me that the van was ready! They had managed to refurbish the turbo and do all the tests in that time. I was very happy. Maciej was my point of contact and his service was great! He made sure everything was like promised and kept me updated on the process.
