Would not let AA/RAC check the car

Big guy, late 40s, said he used to work at 53 Ford. He was charming until I insisted my MIL got an RAC/AA check. My MIL called to arrange this and he immediately turned. He said, "oh no you may as well buy a new car. I had someone in here spent money on a check, said there was something wrong with the clutch and gearbox and didn't buy the car". He then put the phone down! My MIL was left reeling. This rang alarm bells for me. If someone won't let you arrange a check, they know the check is going to reveal something about the car.
