I bought a pair of Paraboot Cafe Lise shoes for 370 euro on the 3rd December which was promptly dispatched via DHL. I was fully expecting to pay duty on the shoes but not the £132 which DHL requested on the 7th Dec before delivery was made. This request would have taken the cost to over £440, which I simply could not condone. I immediately notified the shipper that I would decline the shipment and ask for it to be returned. Before returning the shoes, DHL confirmed that I would not be liable for duty and VAT because these were duties charged by HMRC for shipments imported into the UK. I would not be liable if the package was returned to the origin. DHL attached a form which the shipper needed to complete (for the attention of DHL Italy) by attaching proof of export (to the UK) to waive off taxes on receipt of the package. I also sent this copy directly to the shipper (Cappelletto). I called and wrote to DHL numerous times (with Cappelletto in copy) to ensure that the shoes which I did not actually receive would be returned without incurring further charges. To my surprise, after receiving the shoes, Cappelletto refunded 199 euro of the 370 I paid, claiming that they had paid tax (owed to HMRC) in Italy. DHL UK could not verify this payment and wondered why it could have been paid and after giving the shipper sufficient time to address this, I chose to leave this negative feedback. Cappelleto has no satisfactory process for dealing with goods which customers have declined to receive. The online experience is ok but it does not alert the buyer to the prospect of needing to pay Duty and Taxes of a certain quantum based on their experience of shipping goods of a particular value, to say the UK, which they claim to have sold 47 orders since Brexit. Since there is no clear warning at the point of purchase, Cappelletto should check with the buyer before shipment to confirm that they are content with paying taxes which could amount to £132 based on their experience of selling Paraboot shoes. Crucially, it does not appear that Cappelletto filled in the form provided by DHL for waiving taxes for returned items and I am particularly disappointed with the shippers attempt to deflect blame by pointing to policies on their websites. How many of us would be happy to pay taxes for returned goods which they did not physically receive? Those contemplating buying from this store from outside the EU need to avoid returning goods for any reason as they are likely to be stung with duty and taxes and consequently waste too much too time trying to get the issue resolved.

As an Italian expat, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Cappelletto, a store where I shop every time I return to Italy, ships overseas. I ordered a pair of boots that were delivered all the way to Alaska in a perfect package in five days.
