Be careful – this policy doesn’t cover devices bought outside the UK

I’m really disappointed with this insurance. My claim was rejected simply because my phone / gadgets wasn’t purchased in the UK, even though it’s a genuine Apple product with full global warranty and repair coverage.

I completely understand that terms exist, but this one makes absolutely no practical sense. My family has only been living in the UK for about three years, and like many people, we own devices bought abroad or while travelling. Apparently, none of these are covered — even if they are brand new, genuine, and fully serviceable in the UK.

I bought this policy through MoneySuperMarket, and the restriction wasn’t clearly highlighted. I used to be insured with Admiral before, and their policy didn’t have this kind of unreasonable limitation.

Honestly, I regret choosing this company and wish I had read every single line of the small print. If you’re considering Cedar Tree, please read the exclusions carefully before buying, especially if your gadgets weren’t purchased in the UK.

Hopefully, Cedar Tree will review this outdated and misleading clause, because it really doesn’t reflect how people buy and use tech in 2025.

[update Oct 8]
I’ve now received Cedar Tree’s “final response” to my complaint.
They refused to review my case or offer any goodwill refund, saying that I should have clicked a small “Need Help?” link during the quote process to discover that gadgets must be purchased in the UK.

Realistically, no normal customer buying insurance would dig through a 50-page policy PDF for such a major exclusion. That’s not “clear disclosure” — that’s hiding behind fine print.

I’m a UK resident who bought this policy in good faith to protect my family’s gadgets while travelling. It’s unreasonable to expect people to predict that a legitimate Apple product with global warranty wouldn’t be covered just because it was purchased abroad.

The company’s response took zero accountability and instead blamed consumers. I’ll be taking this further with the Financial Ombudsman Service.

I strongly warn anyone considering Cedar Tree: read every line of the exclusions before you buy. This policy feels designed to catch customers out rather than to protect them.

「update Oct 8 - 2]
Update – company doubling down with poor reasoning

Cedar Tree replied saying that “99% of UK residents buy their phones in the UK” and that “non-UK devices can be harder to repair.”

That completely misses the point. The issue isn’t about how many people buy phones abroad — it’s about fairness and relevance of the exclusion itself. Apple and other major brands provide global repair and warranty, and any UK Apple Store can service an iPhone purchased overseas.

This means the restriction has no practical basis today. Other insurers (like Admiral, CoverForYou, and Staysure) cover ownership, not just purchase location.

Cedar Tree keeps insisting their disclosure is “proportionate,” but expecting a customer to find a critical exclusion hidden in a “Need Help?” link isn’t “clear, fair and not misleading.” It’s just bad practice.

I still believe this clause is outdated and unfair — and I’ve already referred the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service for review.

Thank you for your review.

Our products are designed for UK residents who are travelling from the UK, which is clearly highlighted during the sales process. In the event of a claim, we need a proof of purchase in the form of a mobile contract for the device, or a UK VAT invoice for a new of refurbished phone.

The latest data we have available to us is that in excess of 99% of UK residents purchase their phone in the UK either new, as part of a mobile phone contract, or refurbished.

We do not cover devices purchased without a UK VAT invoice or contract as many devices from other countries differ from those in the UK and can be harder to repair or replace. For example, with an iPhone a US device has no physical SIM slot but has a mmWave antenna window (and the chip set and firmware are slightly different because of that), compared the UK device that does.

We have an obligation to highlight unusual terms, which we do not believe this is, it is present in many products in the market, is in line with the target market for the product and covers in excess of 99% of devices in the way a UK consumer would normally purchase them. We do however, as you note, make it available within the further details section during purchase, which is proportional to the number of customers that could be affected.

We will continue to monitor the way clients purchase devices and will reconsider this condition if there is a material increase in the number of UK consumers purchasing devices abroad.

Update

Thank you for your further comments, while noting that one of the three providers you note has the same exclusion we do and another only accepts foreign devices so long as they have a VAT invoice, we acknowledge your points and will feed them back to the insurer for the gadget section of our policies for consideration at next review.

These guys are misseling insurance

I got a family travel insurance policy and got stuck in Paris during Air Traffic control strikes. I called them to report my claim as I was still in France, crossing the country to try to get home, I was told I could claim all costs once I had returned to the UK. I logged the claim and got a £50 settlement notice, 3 month later without any explanation. I had to call them to be told that the "Classic" policy only covers you for delay, not disruption. WT...! Is a delay not a disruption?! It feels like the kind of nuance that should be made clear to customer. They are misleading people into buying useless policies. Don't waste your time!

Thank you for your review.

We are sorry to learn that you had to claim against your policy. Please note that our policies do not cover all the perils. We note that the policy wording document clearly states that travel disruption is an additional cover - this document was available to download pre and post purchase. As we aim to ensure that our clients are always fully informed, immediately after purchasing your policy, we have emailed you stating that you did not have Travel Disruption cover and provided you with a link to upgrade your policy online. We note that any additional cover, needs to be purchased regardless the level of cover on the policy. Furthermore, we provide a 14 days cooling-off period where clients can cancel the policy and receive a full refund of the premium paid, if after reviewing the policy documents they find that the policy does not meet their needs.

Based on the information you have provided to the claims handlers appointed by your policy insurer, you were only entitled to the travel delay you have experienced, which has been paid.

As you purchased your policy via a comparison site, if you feel that the sales journey was not informative, please feel free to contact them.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Super travel insurance

Great travel insurance, our son had an accident requiring surgery on the day we were due to fly. At an extremely emotive and stressful time the call agents were empathetic and paid the claim to us for needing to cancel the holiday swiftly. A big thank you for making a hugely difficult time easier. Would not hesitate to insure with them again.

Multiple contact attempts- no reply…

I have made 4 attempts to contact and make a claim- insured damaged luggage. No reply, no returned call. I would never use this company again. I have a policy no. But can’t add here as the review will be rejected - resolved less than a week later- I appreciate it. However it’s a shame it took me leaving a 1 start review to get a service I had paid for

We are sorry to hear that your claim suffered delays. We have requested the claims handlers appointed by your policy insurer to expedite your claim, and they have confirmed that your claim will be actioned today, and they will be contacting you accordingly in the next few days.

If you require any further assistance, please let us know.
---------------
UPDATE
Usually claims may take 6 to 10 weeks to be reviewed during busy periods, after this period, if you still have not received any response from the claims handlers, it is advisable to call them instead of emailing them for a quicker follow-up on the claim. Thought the Support Team does not have any jurisdiction regarding claims, after this period, if you contact them they are more than happy to escalate your case.

Terrible experience with holiday medical insurance, avoid at all costs

Went on holiday, had a medical emergency and went to a hospital. Insurance company requested medical history but never actually made the request to the doctor unbeknownst to us, apparently due to "technical issues". This left us unable to get proper treatment because the hospital couldn't confirm cover for expensive treatment.

But, we thought, we'll just claim the treatment we had when we got home. So we did, and we had to get medical history. This took some time, but when we did it was sent from the gp to the insurer, who then didn't contact us at all. When we chased them, again for some technical or human reason the history hadn't been passed to the medical team. We were promised contact after the weekend.
Roll onto the next Friday, still no contact and we chased again. Apparently they need more medical history, but again had not bothered to contact us, and this has now been months.

I understand the need to investigate a claim, but honest this has been an absolute joke of error after error and we've been incredibly patient. We will be making a formal complaint but I wanted to make sure others see this too.

EDIT: While Cedar Tree did get back to me and have asked for a copy of the hospital invoice (which I have provided) I've still yet to hear on a final decision. I will update the review further with the final outcome if I can.

Immoral, horrible, disgusting

If only I had come across these reviews before I purchased a policy. I've never in my life experienced such an immoral, horrible and disgusting experience. Refused to pay a medical bill from the USA in full because they consider a mole on my medical history (amongst other such nonsense issues) to be a pre-existing medical condition. Leaving me with a bill of $1.3k. I can guarantee that AXA will loose way more than $1.3k worth of business given the volume of people I have shared my experience with.

I see I have a reply, this proves my point, trying to justify unethical and unjust practices. There's a reason AXA have 1* on Trustpilot from 2k reviews. Not worth the paper it's written on. All a scam.

Thank you for your review.

When you purchased your policy via MoneySupermarket you were notified that 'Providing inaccurate or incomplete information could result in your policy being cancelled, or any claims being rejected or not paid in full.'

As part of your purchase they asked the question 'Do any of these travellers have a pre-existing medical condition?', this then stated

'We need to know about any condition, even a minor one, that you’ve seen a doctor about in the past 2 years.

We need to know about any serious illness you’ve ever had. Examples include, strokes, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes and anxiety.

We need to know about any condition that you’re currently awaiting test results for, or that you’re waiting for treatment or an operation on.

It may not always cost more to cover your medical conditions. The insurer may not pay any claims you make in full if you fail to declare all relevant conditions.'

You answered no to this question when you had numerous declarable medical conditions (8 in total).

In addition to being made aware of the risks of innacurate declarations at the point of purchase, we also sent you an e-mail enitled 'Double Check Your Cover' on the day of purchase. We can see you read this the next day, the email confirmed you hadn't declared any pre-existing conditions and the importance of doing so.

When you needed to make a claim it became clear you had provided inaccurate information during your purchase. We compared what you did pay to what you would have paid if you'd provided this information which showed that you'd paid 77% of the premium you should have. As this was the case the underwriter covered 77% of the cost of you claim.

While we understand that you are upset by this, we believe you'd have had the same experiance with any other provider on MoneySupermarket, as the partial coverage was soley due to you failing to accurately declare your pre-existing medical conditions.

Disingenuous and incompetent

My flight was cancelled and my travel plans were disrupted. My claim was rejected because they thought I somehow still got home on the cancelled flight and so had no additional costs. In fact I spent £300 on a flight for the next day and provided all the evidence to them.

When I complain about this they say it's not covered under my policy. Apparently I needed to purchase the additional cover. This is utter nonsense.

Section 1a of my policy covers cancellation and is included as standard. Section 3a covers disruption and delays to travel plans and is included as standard.

It seems far more important to them to make it look like my fault, than to actually understand my claim.

EDIT:

So you are going to cover my prepaid cancelled trip through France? My trip was cut short, curtailed you might say. All the evidence is already in my claim.

Your response admits that you've made a mistake. Again!

How exactly can you call it travel insurance if when my flight is cancelled and my trip is ruined, you just shrug and suggest I pay more next time?

Thank you for your review.

When you purchased your policy you selected our lowest level of cover. This includes cover for recovering prepaid costs for cancellation (you being unable to go on your trip - Section1), curtailment (you needing to end your trip early - Section 1) and Missed Departure (Missing your flight - Section 3a).

We offer enhanced Trip Disruption Cover (Section 3b) as an optional upgrade on our basic policies (and included in some of our more comprehensive policies) which extends the cover under Missed Departure / Delayed Arrival and also adds Travel Disruption (additional costs to continue your trip after a failure of public transport, a catastrophe or accommodation provider insolvency) cover.

The claim you made required the optional Travel Disruption (Section 3b) for which 'will pay you up to the amount shown in the Table of Benefits for your reasonable additional accommodation and public transport travel expenses (up to the standard of your original booking) so that you may continue your trip If
your trip is disrupted due to no suitable alternative public transport is provided within 12 hours of the scheduled time of departure following delay or cancellation of your public transport'.

Unfortunately you hadn't added this to your purchase either initially or from our post sale communications hence your claim being declined.

-- Update
Thank you for your further comments. Cover under the standard curtailment cover in relation to public transport applies only to your final departure point to or from the UK. The information that we have been provided by the claims team is that your final departure point back to the UK and for which you'd be able to claim under this section was from Paris. The claim as we've been informed relates to a mid trip flight from Valencia to Marseille for which you would, as advised, require cover under the optional section 3b (Trip Disruption).

As with all insurance products we cover a large number of risks as standard and the level of cover is more comprehensive with higher cover levels. As most clients take a trip to and from a single destination, cover for multi destination mid trip disruptions of this type are usually only covered in more comprehensive cover levels or by optional extras.

Watch the small print very carefully!

I had three serious situations in my 2025 travel, regarding health and theft. The complexity of their small print found them a reason to not pay me anything When I was seriously ill in hospital in a foreign country - trying to navigate getting assistance was a nightmare, and in the end refused. The other two situations, again refused. In all my years of travel I have never made a claim on my insurance. To be crystal clear, there was small print in all three situations that allowed them to legally refuse my claims. It was an expensive policy and useless for me.

Excellent quick reimbursement

My son suffered an anaphylactic shock while on holiday resulting in hospitalisation. It was a declared condition on his policy. Within 10 working days from making the claim he received a reimbursement for the full amount less the excess. It was a smooth easy process for submitting the claim online. Thank you.

Do not use

I recently had damage to a camera lens in transit on a trip from Thailand , i rang to make a claim and process was started , i then received an email stating that i don't have gadget cover .
This was true because at the time of taking out my policy Cedar tree did not offer the extra gadget cover and as i type now they still dont offer it as an added extra . So basically my lens should of been covered under suitcase contents . i was told that becasue i went through a compare site that the inclusive cover for gadgets in the normal luggage insurance was not there because i need to select it on the compare site , even though the compare site redirects customers to the cedar tree site to choose the final policy , which is what i did . but my claim has been dismissed because they are still claiming that i have no gadget cover that they dont offer ... Honestly DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY . They are con merchants

I've reviewed your purchase journey with comparethemarket.com and can see you were asked:

Would you like gadget cover?
Covers new, refurbished, and used gadgets* including smartphones, laptops, cameras and more.

You answered no to this question, this was why the optional gadget cover was not included in your quote.

After your purchase we sent you an e-mail 'Double Check Your Cover' which we can see you opened roughly 12 minutes after we sent you it. This had a section

PHONE & GADGET COVER
Cover for accidental damage, theft and loss of your gadgets including Mobile Phones, iPhones, iPads, Tablets, Camera’s, Go Pro’s, Smartwatches and Laptops. Cover is available for up to £3,000 of devices. Maximum single item limits apply.

It confirmed, in red: You have no cover in this area

It then provided an 'Add Now' link to our customer zone which would have allowed you to add this to your policy up until the date of travel.

While we are sorry to hear you are unhappy with your policy, based on our review gadget cover was made available to you at the point of purchase, you were reminded that you'd chosen not to take this cover post purchase and you had the option to add the cover at any point up until the date you travelled.

For completeness I'd note that when you purchase via comparethemarket.com you do so fully on their website, your first direct contact with us would be when you receive your post purchase e-mails.

Horrible service

I took out insurance with Cedar Tree, thinking I was paying for a premium service. Instead, they just offload your claim to other companies—Davies Group and MMI—who proceed to ignore you and hold your phone hostage.

I paid £150 excess for a phone repair, only to get my phone back still faulty. When I tried to get it properly fixed under warranty, the repair company took my phone and refused to give it back. Cedar Tree conveniently hides behind these companies, claiming it’s “out of their hands.” So what am I paying for exactly? Avoid at all costs unless you enjoy fighting to get your own phone back after they take your money.

We have contacted Davies, the claims handlers appointed by your policy insurer, and requested them to review your claim, they have now confirmed that MMI have advised the item has come back under warranty with water damage and they are going to replace the camera as a gesture of goodwill (conducted by MMI), but as there is water damage to the item they will not repair anything else. They have also informed us that they have contacted you accordingly. If you require any further clarifications in this regards, please contact directly Davies.

If you have any other queries, please let us know.

I pay an annual policy for worldwide…

I pay an annual policy for worldwide cover for only £225. Asked this morning for coverage for a weeks winter sports to be added onto a policy which has less than a month to run and was quoted £335!
Absurdly high, clearly the person on the other end was either untrained or otherwise!
I won’t be renewing again with Cedar Tree!

We'd like to investigate this for you, but you've left your review on an anonymous basis and not responded to our request for more information.

We'd like to do so for a number of reasons:

1. Our systems don't allow agents to make changes to AMT policies in the last month of cover as they rarely constitute good value. It may be that the price you've been quoted is for renewing the policy early for a year of cover including wintersports.
2. Our agents would also normally offer you an alternative option of a single trip with wintersports if that offered better value than upgrading your AMT (as AMT pricing for wintersports is based on you having cover for a whole year it's often cheaper to have a seperate Single Trip cover for a one off weeks cover).
