Misleading advice re. solar panel inverter

A cold-call from this company was made on 16 March 2025 saying they had taken over the customer list from a previous supplier and that we were due a site visit to check on our solar panel inverter. A visit was arranged for the next day. The visiting agent claimed that our inverter was in danger of damage because of mains electricity spikes over 250v, and that this could be dangerous. He strongly advised us that we urgently needed to fit a voltage regulator (£3000 + £600 VAT), which could be arranged just three days on from his visit. He also found slight damage to one of the cables leading into the inverter from the roof panels, and claimed it was also a result of voltage spiking. Although we signed an agreement, I was suspicious (no money changed hands) and contacted a trusted, local installer of 20 years experience (and MCS certified) that we'd used before. He called in on 18 March 2025 to check the system. He assured me that in York, voltage spikes are rarely more that 240v and, in any case, the inverter would switch itself off if high spikes ever occurred. The damage to the input cable was probably done when the inverter was first installed (by a different company) and 'repaired' with insulating tape, which had caused some overheating. I immediately cancelled the agreement with Clean Energy Maintenance Services - we were clearly mislead.
