Problematic
With the founder now retired and Cranleigh Builders switching to next generation management, there is definitely a competency vacuum. While they have some good guys working for them, the management places them in a pretty difficult position with regard to the time and materials they are allowed within the fixed price agreed with the client. This makes it difficult for them to do a thorough job, necessitating much cutting of corners which is actually not their fault. On the subject of money, be sure to compare Cranleigh's payment terms with other contractors and do be sure to get a fully itemised list of charges as they will readily exploit the advantage if you don't. The head honcho is belligerent to deal with and unaccepting of a client's opinion if it doesn't suit him. There was a catalogue of misjudgments and quality/finish issues with his project management of my kitchen refurbishment that was down to a combination of non-delivery of services agreed within the fixed price and a distinct lack of engagement on the project management side. This resulted in my having to bring in properly professional firms to fix a number of mistakes and shortcomings. Honestly, it's just not worth the grief. There are far better managed building contractors around who are committed to a good service and a high quality finish.
