Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the subscription model, citing issues with limitations and unexpected charges. People also frequently encountered problems with the app, including crashes, instability, and difficulties with basic functionalities like typing or translating documents. The user experience was often described as dreadful due to poor design choices, such as excessive blank space and small working frames, which hindered productivity. However, some people were satisfied with the product's quality, especially for professional or technical content, and found it superior to other translation tools. A few other people also felt that the user experience was positive, praising its ease of use, speed, and reliability, particularly for daily translations and integration with other applications.

I was really happy with Deepl Pro since 2021. But they introduced without warning in june 2025 a "new" version full of AI-like crap. See all comments here that prove that this version is a nightmare... See more

I've been using deepl for 4-5 years at least, as a translator. At first, it seemed to offer superior quality to that of google and many other competitors, so worth subscribing for a fee. However, in t... See more

I opted for a monthly subscription

I opted for a monthly subscription, it put me in a yearly one and now they ask me for $300. They are insane!

I just found out by finding an invoice in my inbox.

Seems like an elaborate scam.

Deeply flawed

I use DeepL for Japanese to English. It's good sometimes but totally awful sometimes. Problems: the developers were too lazy to load common Japanese grammar and idioms (I have pointed this out to them directly at least twice, so they can't say they didn't know). Instead they try a literal translation which often results in errors that a 5-year-old would laugh at. Other times it just omits things that it doesn't understand (like an entire key sentence from a paragraph). GUI problem: I always use it for Japanese to English but I have to set this up each time I open the program. If I allow it to "recognize" the input language, it often chooses Chinese. They also force the user to scroll down for the translation instead of having it alongside the input as it used to be. Finally, unlike Google translate, it does not give pronunciation for Japanese words.
Overall, two stars is generous.

I bought a high tier subscription to…

I bought a high tier subscription to translate some videos, i attempted to translate a batch of videos but they wouldn't download so when I refreshed to try again, the previous batch counted towards my monthly download limit making me not able to translate and complete my task. I contacted them through 2 different avenues to let them know half my monthly allowance has essentially disappeared, it's been 2 weeks i still haven't heard anything. I have essentially wasted 60$. There is zero customer service.

Get rid of Cloudflare, it's annoying

Deep is good when it comes to translation but lately it's been the worst thing you can use, especially with that Cloudflare pop-up window that you have to verify each time you open deepl.com. And even when u verify it it freezes. Get rid of Cloudflare

Annoying AI

I didn't need it, but it was forced. So, I attempted to shut it off, as it was interrupting my typing, but it wasn't working, the small icon kept popping up - so annoying.

Constant Crashes and Freezes

The DeepL desktop app is completely useless. It constantly freezes, crashes for no reason, and consumes an absurd amount of memory. I expected reliability, but instead I got a trash app that can’t even run smoothly on a normal computer. This is by far the worst translation app I’ve ever used.

Can't even get basic functionality right

Your translator just literally doesn't work, it doesn't allow me to type anything in to the box. Is it too much to expect that the absolute most basic functionality of your application works? So stupid.

lost €60

I bought the wrong plan on DeepL by mistake. I noticed it right away and kindly wrote to their support asking to correct my error. It’s been 10 days now and I haven’t received any reply. Looks like I lost €60… and there’s nothing I can do about it.

Difficult Translator

I tried the translator and it was so difficult to use. Too much effort for a couple of snippets I would like to translate. It's better to use Google. Google has a longer history translating our world's languages and they offer that service for free.

Hopeless

Hopeless. Fairly accurate translations but keeps erasing what I have typed so far before I have finished, forcing me to type in the text all over again.

Their new version is even worse than it was before

I've never liked them because I could tell how greedy and hyper they are, which is why I ditched them, but then someone mentioned how great they were compared to goolag translate and I decided to try again.

Even before, a CONSTANT stream every day of popups trying to get me to pay and also use their desktop which doesn't work on Win 7 anyway.

Now they changed the entire thing with the evil AI, and there's TONS of popups all over the place, the essay field is long now, AND they deleted my text in the fields, so now I have to remember what I said.

I have several tabs open with text in them and when my tab suspender suspends them, it looks like they change the code and now it deletes. OMG It NEVER did that before. Just like with goolag, it kept the text.

TERRIBLE!!!

Sub par service and translation

Terrible service. Customer support is also lacking so when you do have an issue good luck getting it resolved in a timely manner. I used up my 3 document translation because I had to split the document up so that it was more readable to the software. Not even a fraction of the document was translated and only 1 of the three downloaded to my computer. When I tried to download the others it said to contact customer service. This sending me in circles. Not worth the money or the headache that comes along with it.

They have imposed a limit of 300,000…

They have imposed a limit of 300,000 characters for the paid individual plan.
If you are given free rein, you will charge for air!
What is the point of limiting the number of characters for individual paid users? So that I switch to a business or team plan? I do not need these plans!
Bring back unlimited characters for paid plans! Greed will be your downfall!

Data Protection Blackmail !

We have been contacted as a company by sales team from DeepL, the team informed us that multiple employees in our company use the tool and if we do not have any concerns about our data protection because of that. As a solution they have offered us a licensed plan and a DPA agreement. Our teams use web as the company policy allows it, mainly to translate non sensitive text. For sensitive data, we do use internal AI tools and On Premise language models, Office365 and Azure solutions. The idea of making a deal through regulatory pressure, by pointing possible risks without being able to indicate factual records, is simply apoling. As a result, access to all DeepL tools within the company has now been disabled. Well done guys 👌
