Avoid this rental company

Avoid this rental company. They are extremely dishonest about their pricing. They force you to purchase insurance, which is not disclosed on their website. To make matters worse, the insurance they require isn’t even primary coverage — it’s just additional insurance on top of the policy you already have. When I questioned this, the employee was rude and dismissive instead of offering any explanation.

The car itself was also in terrible condition: it smelled like marijuana, shook badly above 55 mph, and the windshield wipers only smeared the water, making it dangerous to drive in the rain. Unlike other rental car companies at the airport, this one is offsite and far less transparent. Because of their dishonest practices, my rental ended up costing $120 more than what I paid at a different company just last month.

Save yourself the frustration and rent from a more reputable provider at the airport.

Expedia and Economy Rent a Car

On March 2, 2025 my son sent me his plans to be married in Vancouver on July 25, 2025.

I began to plan the trip with my wife and daughter among other things by booking a car through Expedia on March 2, 2025 with Economy Rent a Car in Richmond, BC. The price was competitive and although the car rental agency was not located at the airport, I was assured I would be shuttled to the office where the vehicle would be picked up. A week before my flight in July, I contacted Economy Rent a Car and they again assured me that I could contact them from the airport and a shuttle would be sent to pick up my wife, my daughter and myself in a to bring us to the vehicle.

When we arrived at he airport and retrieved our luggage, I contacted Economy Rent A Car agency by phone as I was instructed. The agent from Economy Rent a Car began to ask questions about my booking and acted like they had no record of my reservation, After many pauses and “holds” in the conversation they finally admitted to locating my booking. She then said they could send a shuttle to pick us up but it would cost me an extra $300.

I was beside myself and repeated to the agent my process of booking the reservation and their service etc. and telling her that no mention of an extra fee for shuttle was ever mentioned to me. Alas this was to no avail. I realized that the original price of $538.07 for a week of car rental had been increased by $300. because of the additional cost of the shuttle service.

I decided to call Expedia for support. I wasn’t about to be scammed by the company for the extra fees. It was difficult to find a phone number for Expedia but when I did find it and called, the customer service agent told me that Expedia bore no responsibility for the car agency’s actions and there was nothing they could do about my dilemma.

Here we were in Vancouver airport in peak tourist season with no car rental. I called all the major car rental agencies and they were all out of vehicles. I finally was able to locate a small company near the airport called “Trust” and they provided me with a vehicle at a higher price but thank goodness we were able to obtain a vehicle.

I guess my bottom line is:

Why even use Expedia if they can’t support their “service” they helped facilitate
Economy Rent a Car agency took advantage of an off-season price agreement that was made in March to try and squeeze more money from a customer under false pretenses as they had me at an extreme disadvantage
You can imagine that this will be the last time I ever use either of Expedia or Economy Rent a Car “services” in the future

Economy Rent a Car: Unprofessional, Unethical, and Left Me Stranded

I rented a vehicle from Economy Rent a Car in Costa Rica with high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience was terrible.

After temporarily misplacing the car key, I immediately notified the company. Instead of assisting me, they demanded an outrageous $1,500 fee just to help, which I declined.

Without my consent, they then took the car — with all my personal belongings still inside — leaving me stranded without transportation. Their “24/7” customer service was unresponsive, and the only contact I received came from a private number, which raised doubts about legitimacy.

When I eventually recovered the key, Economy refused to return my belongings unless I delivered the key first — even requiring me to travel five hours to retrieve my possessions. This behavior is not only unethical but also violates the terms of our rental agreement.

I have filed complaints with Costa Rican consumer authorities and strongly advise others to avoid Economy Rent a Car.

Extremely disappointing experience

Extremely disappointing experience. I booked through Booking.com for 211 CAD, but was charged 903.11 CAD by Economy Rent A Car with no clear explanation. I returned the car on time as per the contract, and after 45 days, my deposit still hasn’t been refunded. The company does not respond to calls or emails. Hidden fees and poor service — I would not recommend this company.

Incorrect and Unsafe Car Seat…

Incorrect and Unsafe Car Seat Provision.
Economy Car Rentals Customer Service_ I have written to them formally to raise a serious concern regarding our recent rental experience booked through their service. We specifically booked two car seats suitable for children up to 6 years old. However_ upon arrival at the rental provider (Wheego)_ we were shocked to discover that only one car seat was available_ and it was only suitable for a child up to 4 years old. Wheego staff informed us that this was all they had been instructed to provide based on the details received from Economy Car Rentals. This was not only extremely frustrating and inconvenient after a long journey_ but more importantly_ it was dangerous. Traveling with inappropriate or insufficient child restraints puts young passengers at serious risk_ and I am deeply concerned by the lack of responsibility and communication that led to this situation. We were left to urgently find alternative_ age-appropriate car seats for our children during our stay—something that should have been properly arranged in advance. This experience significantly impacted the start of our trip and could have had far worse consequences had we been involved in an accident.
A full review of your procedures for handling child seat bookings.
Outside of the car seat issue , the car was sufficient to meet our need it was clean and we had no issues while travelling . I would suggest the car parking ticket be included in the cost of the rental rather than asking customers to pay on exist from the car park both on arrival and departure .

Avoid at All Costs – This Place Shouldn’t Be in Business

We booked an SUV through Priceline with Economy Rent a Car at Charleston Airport for a family trip. It was the only company not located directly at the airport — a red flag we wish we’d noticed sooner. After waiting far too long for a sketchy shuttle, we were finally taken off-site to what can only be described as a run-down shack in the middle of nowhere. The building reeked of cigarette smoke and who knows what else.

When we got inside, not only did they not have the SUV we reserved for our family of four — they only had one car on the lot: a Chevy Malibu being hosed down on a dirt road. That was it. No apology, no options, no customer service — just a “take it or leave it” attitude. So we took the shuttle back to the airport and ended up going with a different company entirely. The entire ordeal wasted nearly two hours of our time and added unnecessary stress to the start of our vacation.

This company is a disgrace. Poorly run, totally unreliable, and should not be allowed to operate under the pretense of an airport rental car provider. Do yourself a favor and steer clear.

This place is a scam

This place is a scam. I would stay away from priceline too as they direct your booking to this car rental without telling you until you paid. They up charge everything and all the hidden fees. They will ask proof of insurance coverage limit if you declined their coverage. Even if you can provide your proof of insurance they still charge you insurance fee for not buying their coverage.

Literally fraudulent.

Literally fraudulent.

I booked a car with Economy through Expedia.

When I arrived at the rental car (Miami) on 16 April 2025, the Economy agent:
- would not accept any form of debit card (!?)
- refused to rent me the car that was reserved;
- said I was entitled to a refund no questions asked;
- stated that to obtain the refund, I merely had to contact Expedia.

Expedia agents have stated that they cannot give the refund as the money went to Economy

On 10 April 2025, I attended Economy Car Rentals and the agent and was again refused a refund.

I suspect the above scenario is deliberate and part of their business model (other people in the queue had exactly the same issue re debit cards).

DO NOT USE

Review for Economy Rent A Car

Review for Economy Rent A Car – 111 SW 33rd St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315

My experience with Economy Rent A Car at 111 SW 33rd St in Fort Lauderdale was unacceptable and highly unprofessional. The company never disclosed that taking the vehicle out of state was prohibited. This critical information was not mentioned during booking or at the time of pickup—had I known, I would have gone with another rental provider.

After returning the vehicle, I was hit with unauthorized charges totaling $1,500, including additional mileage fees I was never informed about. On top of that, I was threatened with collections if I didn’t pay an additional $410 balance.

When I attempted to resolve the issue, I was met with complete disrespect and a lack of professionalism from so-called managers Marcela Becerra and Ileana Ruis. Instead of working toward a resolution, they were dismissive, rude, and showed no concern for customer service.

I am currently disputing all charges with my credit card company and have filed complaints with both the Better Business Bureau and Economy Rent A Car’s corporate office.

Avoid this location at all costs. Hidden fees, zero transparency, and intimidation tactics are not how you treat paying customers.

Worst Car Rental Services Ever

We booked a car in Charleston, SC with this company via Expedia. Firstly when we reached we had to call a number and no one picked up. When they picked up we were put on hold for ages. Subsequently we got connected to the location via their international call number. The woman was so rude and said she has no cars for pick up and that she didnot have a booking or a confirmation. Even though we had the same from Expedia. In the end we had no car as everything was sold out . NEVER HIRE A CAR FROM THIS PLACE

Stay away from Economy Rent a car

Having booked a car rental with Economy rent a car at SJO airport, and after a long transatlantic trip, we arrived at the car rental office after a short van ride from the airport. I was aware that insurance may be an additonal cost due to the we checked the vehicle exterior for damage and filmed it but as it was dark on arrival when we saw the interior this morning we saw just how dreadful the car seats were and the general interior condition which looks like it never been cleaned for many months. It is truly disgusting, and to add to that, we were forced us to have additional insurance, which, whilst I had a policy with AIG for excess and damage waiver, we were still charged an additional $37.99 per day. We were told this was for the liability waiver for damage or injury to persons, but this charge should have been $20.00 per day to cover liability if you collide with a person not a car. We should not have been charged the extra $17.00 a day, as we are insured and provided the policy and the certificate. I was told to sign this document, otherwise I could not take the car.

This is common practice with this company, and it is well documented that they add on huge additional costs. Despite me having a full policy and a printed copy of the full policy, as I travel globally and hire cars regularly and have never had this happen before. The condition of the car was appalling and you can see the disgusting condition of the interior. The vehicle had a steering wobble when driving at around 80 Kph, and the bonnet came open during the rental. And it took a considerable time to ensure the bonnet closed properly. The two rear tyres were under-inflated, and we added around 8 psi to each rear wheel. I would consider the vehicle to be very unsafe, but these faults became evident after we had set off for La Fortuna. We did stop to get the vehicle checked, and that was when we were told about the tyres and then the bonnet issue.

I did email the rental company about the interior condition, the first thing the next morning and sent pictures in. We had a response to say they would follow up, but I have heard nothing to date.

Stay away from this company. I challenged the representative about the insurance, and I am sure they gave me this dreadful car. I said I should go to another reputable company and was told, "Go ahead then"
They don't care and will rip you off

Bait and switch at its finest Tampa

Bait and switch at its finest. Expedia posts a $150 for a 5 day rental charge. After a long day of travel arrived at Economy in Tampa. Agent says you can either agree to a $500 deposit or go with a .01 cent deal. I've been renting cars for years and never have I been snookered like this place did. Final charges equated to $335 more than double quoted fees. Very poor business practices.

ECONOMY CAR RENTAL MIAMI , FL

Economy demanded that I have “loss of show” insurance. And if it wasn’t on my policy then I had to pay an extra $25 a day from them . I called my insurance agent, literally while I was standing there and she told me this company was feeding me a line of bullshit, and that that is not mandatory to rent a car . So I told that to the person at the car rental place and she said “ It’s MY COMPANYS requirement .” So basically , they intentionally screw you . Then I had booked a MIDSIZE vehicle . I was given a Toyota Corolla . I said this is a COMPACT CAR . She said , “ MY COMPANY considers this a midsize vehicle .” No concern at all for the customer . I will NEVER EVER rent a car from them again .
