Erste Bank Abuse
I am not a person who likes to spread a story of bad experiences, but I also don't like people who are not honest and in making others lives miserable get away with it.
My experience was with Erste Bank, Salgotarjan branch in Hungary. They are rude, obnoxious and totally unprofessional with the branch manager,Babjákné Papp Mónika topping them all. My late wife had two bank accounts with them of whom my two daughters are the beneficiaries. As they reside in the USA, they gave me Power of Attorney to act on their behalf. In April 2025 I presented my papers to the bank whereby the branch manager Babjákné Papp Mónika, made a copy of all the documents and said she would send them to head office. She also said she would contact me. Four months later, August 2025 I went to see them to enquire what was going on as I hadn't heard from them. Another lady assisted me and couldn't find anything on the computer concerning this matter. She made copies again but refused to give me a receipt of the documents that she took. The bank manager Babjákné Papp Mónika agreed it was the bank's policy not to give a receipt. When I asked the lady assisting me what her name was as she was not wearing a name tag, she refused. When I confronted the manager Babjákné Papp Mónika as to what had happened to my documents that she had made copies of in April and for which I didn't get a receipt, she said she went on holiday. Then the temperature heated up and she told me to leave the bank. I said if I leave the bank I would come back with the police and she calmed down.
Other banks like CIB and OTP, started the same time regarding the inheritance and all has been sorted out with a very professional and polite manner. So, I don't think the problem is with me.
I plan to close all my bank accounts with them and never recommend them to anyone.
Terrible and not available support
Terrible and not available support, cannot even block the bank cards.. impossible to verify with correct codes, late or no anwers from your bank person.. worse bank I have seen..

Former Employee and Customer
I have been a Customer and an Employee so I've seen both sides. I'm not a job hopper, I am a manager myself and I rarely leave bad reviews (been in my current job for 7 years) but I must say their managers are the most unethical, toxic, disgusting, disrespectful human beings I've ever encountered. Made me wait 3 months for my own money to be transferred to my new account, in time of need and tragic family event. Their company culture is toxic, they don't care about their Customers or Employees and they will eff you over wherever they can. Sadly I have nothing nice to say about them. Never been happier to leave a Company. Oh did I mention that they are delierately breaking the law. Stay away.
Horribe user experience, large fees in Erste Investment
It is sad that I can't leave zero star, because Erste Investment in Hungary is such a horrible service.
The web and mobile app is straight from the 90s, the fees are very high.
I don't recommend it, use Lightyear instead for TBSZ accounts in Hungary.

Not the first time it happened, I can not make a transfer for 2+ days neither via george web, nor george app.
They have a system update.
Plus the CS gives false info, that I should try on a computer, that should work. Not.
The service - i would not even call it a service - is a shame, the george web/app "future of banking " is a joke.
plus the "service" is expensive in general.
The bank does not provide the internet service, so i have to make a transfer over the phone and they would even charge me 0,3xx% ... absolutely ridiculous

My old account I opened in 2001 was transitioned from Citibank into Erste and then the nightmare began.
Today I have no access to my account, I don’t know the balances and now and then I get a nasty letter sent to an old address stating that one of the accounts which is in Forint is slightly overdrawn. I cant use George bc I never was given a 7 digit code bc of a foreign cell phone number (yes Erste listen up, back then when you implemented George you would not allow a cellphone from oversees!!!). I cannot login on the computer bc George is blocking everything. They are requiring ID with a chip in George App that keeps failing no matter what ID I try! Identification on the phone keeps failing bc the bank has the wrong info on file.
After all I have the original documentation from the day the account was opened with Citibank and non of that info seems to match!! The worst thing no one absolutely no one can help me.
I called so many times!
I think they are committing fraud and are using victims who live in foreign countries.
They keep saying it is a security measure by law little do they know they are destroying trust with this amateur App they are so proud of. Unbelievable.
The last rep I talked to said no one will help you and your account will keep spiraling down that is literally her words!! I asked for the transcript of the call she conveniently hung up the phone!!! This is an absolute horror with Erste.
I would never open an account with them, STAY AWAY and stay worry free and free!
Planning to leave Erste, due to their amateur George app
Erste in Hungary has had some grave issues with its George app; it's down at least once a month, inefficient, and there has been no sign of improvement for the last year.
However, they don't miss a chance to bother me with loan-related marketing calls.
Due to the never-ending technical breakdowns, I'm planning to leave Erste
Worst Bank to have account
First of all, they charge for every transaction. Cash Withdrawal, PIN change, Online money transfer, for giving the bank card, for taking back the bank card, for closing the account. Its pathetic. You lose more money if you open the account in Erste. Could you belive they charge 10000 HUF to close the account? Around 5K for taking the card back, 5 K for closing the account.. Ridiculous.. Strongly recommend not to bank with Erste.

I work with Banks all over the world including Africa and LatAm and I can assure there is no bank reaching the same lows as ERSTE BANK ZRT. An absolute shameful experience.

Awful experience. Waiting times are extremely long while not enough employers assisting you see others just chatting or doing nothing.
Also the biggest rip off charging ridiculous amounts for withdrawals, transfers. Disgusting company

Horrible experience. I went to their branches twice to open an account, you are waiting there for 1 hour or more, and then somebody comes over and tells me "sorry we do not have time today for you, we can make an appointment". Really?

STAY AWAY if you do not want to turn grey in a month.
Forced to ERSTE after takeover from CitiBank. Going from an excellent experience to the ultimate banking nightmare. STAY AWAY! FX transactions are priced at an incredible high level. there are numerous capitol controls, so taking more than a certain amount in cash will cost you a hefty sum. The Georgi APP is a complete joke! The helpdesk..what helpdesk? Due to my work in finance, I deal with over 20 banks worldwide and ERSTE BANK is by far the worst experience I have had in the past 25 years!
Avoid this "bank".
Customer service just as useless as their George "system". Reaching a human assistant by their phone number is nearly impossible.
