DO NOT RENT HERE. Terrible experience, a scam. Customer service at Munich Airport is THE WORST (Representative’s name was Ivanovich or similar).

This was, without question, the most appalling customer service experience I have ever encountered (Europcar munich). I paid a substantial amount for what was clearly represented as comprehensive insurance with zero excess. After accepting my payment, your staff insisted that I had no insurance and attempted to make me purchase it again. When I questioned this contradiction and showed my contract, instead of resolving the issue professionally, the staff (A guy by the name of Ivanovich) laughed at us, dismissed our concerns, and even threatened to call the police. Being treated like criminals after paying for the highest level of protection was humiliating, intimidating, and completely unacceptable. No customer should ever be subjected to this level of disrespect or intimidation. The entire experience felt misleading, unprofessional, and deeply dishonest. I strongly urge anyone considering renting from Europcar to choose another company. No one should have to endure this kind of treatment after paying for a service in good faith. I will never use Europcar again and cannot recommend them to anyone.

All I can say is THANK GOD FOR HERTZ!!

All I can say is THANK GOD FOR HERTZ!!
If I could give zero stars I would.
We arrived in Belfast at 1pm to collect our hire car and the desk was closed. It apparently doesn’t open until 2pm on a Sunday. I rang a number displayed on the desk and was told our booking was live and a car would be allocated at 2pm when it opened. At 5 past 2 a lady arrived who was more interested in opening her can of pop than dealing with us. We passed over our details to be told the booking had been declined because the collection time was 1pm which they could not fulfil. We had not received notification of this from Europcar or EasyJet. I explained what I had been told when I rang customer services and she waved a paper at us with the booking scribbled out saying “it’s declined”. We asked to reinstate it and she very rudely said it would cost £600 followed by “there’s a shortage of cars”. She was absolutely no help whatsoever and her attitude was appalling. She offered no alternatives or advice and it was looking like we were going to be stranded with our destination 1.5 hours drive away.
We approached Hertz who were very obliging and thankfully the young lady sorted us out with a small car for us to use. Some of the blame may lie with EasyJet because the car was booked at the same time as the flight however they are not to blame for the Europcar employee and her shocking customer service and attitude.
Reading the comments on here the service we received seems to be a recurring theme and I would advise anyone to NOT BOOK WITH EUROPCAR AMD AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
We will never use them again!

Picked up hire car at Pisa airport…

Picked up hire car at Pisa airport informed assistant that I already had full insurance. The car was fine, dropped off with no issues got home to find they had taken £366 out off my credit card, phoned europcar to complain, they said I had signed for it with the paperwork being in Italian I was trusting the assistant and he either made a mistake or deliberately made me sign. No money back and I’m out of pocket. Will never hire from them again.

Cancelled car without informing me, tried to sell me the same car for 11x the price

I don’t like leaving a 1 star review but I could not find anything positive to say about my experience with renting a car from Europcar Munich Airport. We booked a car online for 16 euros a few days in advance and arrived at 9:10am to pick it up. We waited 50 minutes before being served only to be told that our booking was cancelled due to a “rate engine error”. The lady said we should have been emailed but we did not receive any notice of the cancellation, we asked for proof of an email being sent but she could not provide any. The worse part was, the lady was extremely condescending and had a terrible attitude - she said “the price is too low you CLEARLY shouldn’t have booked it”. She then proceeded to quote me 175 euros for the SAME car we originally booked, even though it was showing as 75 euros online when I did a search on my phone. I just left and went to Avis who were able to lend me a car last minute for 75 euros.

⭐ Very disappointing experience

⭐ Very disappointing experience : disputed damage charges

Unfortunately, I would not recommend Europcar in Barcelona based on my recent experience.

After returning the vehicle, I was contacted and informed that I was being charged for scratches/damage to the car. However, these scratches were already present when I collected the vehicle. Luckily, I took both video and photographic evidence at the start of the rental, which clearly documents the condition of the car.

Despite this, I am now having to go through the inconvenience and stress of formally disputing the proposed damage/excess charges.

I hire cars on a regular basis and this is the first time I have encountered an issue like this. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise anyone hiring a car to take detailed videos and photographs of every part of the vehicle before driving away, as I am extremely grateful that I did. I am still awaiting my deposit return!

I personally would not book with Europcar in Barcelona again and would choose another rental company in future.

On a positive note, the team member at the desk when I collected the car was helpful and pleasant, and I appreciated their assistance at the time.

I hope Europcar reviews the evidence I have provided and resolves this matter fairly and promptly.

Took Money for a Booking I Didn't Make!

I was charged for a rental that I didn't make or use! One would expect an apology and immediate action. Not with Europcar, heel dragging and a lack of anything that resembles customer service. They simply do not give a damn!!

Europe car Freiburg

Europe car Freiburg , Germany.
On their website it says it is 24 hour service and you can pick up the car quite late so on our way from Hamburg to Freiburg on the train which is delayed by about 1 1/2 hours we managed to book a car with Europcar Freiberg. The card was charged and we got a reservation number assuming we will get a confirmation soon and can pick up the car when we arrive by train. There was no confirmation and we couldn’t reach anybody.

My question is, why was the reservation able to go through if they are not open and not providing this service? The reservation should have been rejected and our card not charged at all so we could have been able to book another car and the funds not reserved on our debit card. After numerous phone calls the following morning we finally got the station that we booked the car on and they were simply not interested at all in helping and just made a cancelled because they could not confirm the booking which has ruined our day as our plan was a day trip on Saturday and make our way to the airport on the Sunday.

The service was poor to non-existent and the reservations should never have gone through and the card never charged if the service could not be provided. They took absolutely no responsibility for anything. Considering this is Germany, it was a disgrace to German efficiency and effectiveness which in this case did not exist.

Very bad experience

The vehicle displayed an error message (engine malfunction) and there was a loud noise coming from the engine. Road assistance towed the car away, and in agreement with the rental location in Bergamo, we were instructed to pick up a replacement vehicle at Turin Airport. Europcar agreed to reimburse the taxi fare. Later, Europcar withdrew from this agreement, claiming that the car was in working order and only needed an air conditioning refill. In reality, it was impossible to drive the vehicle. An extremely poor experience with Europcar.

We hired a car from Europcar in…

We hired a car from Europcar in Portugal for 10 days after booking through Jet2. We had paid around £210 for a Ford Fiesta (or similar), but the experience at the rental desk got our holiday off to a very poor start.

After an early morning flight, we arrived at the desk with all of our paperwork, only to be met with what I can only describe as aggressive sales tactics. Because we had booked through a third party, we were told we had a €3,000 excess if the vehicle was damaged and would be responsible for paying upfront for any damage. We’d also be responsible for arranging and paying for breakdown etc. The staff repeatedly pushed us to buy Europcar's additional insurance.

We tried to compare the cover we had already purchased, but before we had a chance to do so, we were told our hire would be cancelled and we would have to join the back of a very long queue to rebook - if any cars were still available. Given that our original booking was non-refundable, we felt we had little choice but to continue.

As a young woman travelling with a small child, I found the whole interaction intimidating. The 2 members of staff were unnecessarily confrontational, and I even had to ask them to calm down as they continued trying to sell the insurance after we'd already declined it. I also found it unprofessional that they were frequently speaking to each other in Portuguese during our conversation, making it impossible to know what was being discussed.

We also discovered that the named driver only had a debit card, not a credit card, so we had to pay around £120 to make the additional driver the lead driver, as cash wasn't accepted. That was disappointing but, it's company policy, so we accepted it without issue. We had also pre-booked a child seat, which cost another £110. Unfortunately, the child seat provided was poor quality and difficult to use, so I wouldn't recommend hiring one from Europcar.

The car itself was excellent. It already had significant damage to the front from a previous renter, so we took extensive photos and videos before leaving, which I'd strongly recommend anyone else does. The vehicle drove well and really helped us make the most of our holiday.

Returning the car was quick and straightforward. We returned it with a full tank of fuel, and the returns team were efficient, professional and provided written confirmation that the vehicle had been accepted with no further charges.

Overall, the rental itself was good, and the returns process was excellent. However, the experience at collection was so unpleasant that it overshadowed the start of our holiday.

One final concern was that all of the paperwork we were asked to sign was in Portuguese. I requested an English version before signing but was told one wasn't available. The copy emailed to me afterwards was also only in Portuguese.

This review would have been far more positive if the collection staff had focused on customer service rather than high-pressure insurance sales.

Conned into an upgrade I did not need

I booked a car for my holiday in the UK. Paid £355 for a Skoda Scalia or equivalent for 14 days. Pick up was at Heathrow Airport. After a 19 plus hour flight from Australia, got to Heathrow 8pm exhausted, Europcar took advantage of that and upgraded me to a car I did not need to bring up paying extra £1,000 plus.
When picking up the car, the customer service refused to give me the Skoda because my luggage was as too large and was their policy NOT to fold back seat or put luggage on the back seat. They gave me a BYD SUV and which ended up being too small to fit my luggage anyway and the same customer service ended up putting one of the cases in the back seat. I was too tired too argue. I have tried raising this concern with Europcar, haven’t heard back from them.
AVOID THEM IF YOU CAN!

We rented an Audi A3 or equivalent, to pick at Munich Airport myself and my friend who had booked the car, at the pick up at we met Miki Vasic, what a very good customer service agent, a pleasant manner, conversed with us in English as we spoke no German, he got us to upgrade to an nearly new Audi S5 for a nominal fee, no fuss no drama just pleasant chit chat with us and such personable skills, made us forget the whole I hour wait at the Euopcar desk, I really had to leave this positive feedback, my name is Sohesh Patel, I was a named second driver on the rental.

Europcar charged us twice for the same…

Europcar charged us twice for the same car rental and, after more than three months, the issue is still not resolved.

The booking was already paid online at the time of reservation, as clearly shown by the receipts. The amount of €207.26 had already been paid in advance. At the time of car collection, only the child seat or the remaining extra amount of approximately €91 should have been charged.

Instead, an additional €290.40 was charged to another card.

The person collecting the car was an elderly woman who did not speak English. I believe Europcar staff took advantage of this situation by making her pay again, even though the rental had already been paid online.

All receipts and documents clearly show the incorrect double charge. Despite this, after more than three months, there has still been no proper refund, no serious solution, and no clear answer from Europcar.

This is shameful customer service and completely unacceptable from an international company.

Avoid at all costs

Avoid at all costs: Do not use this company. They will remove funds from your deposit illegally and for no clear reason. They will then deny any wrong doing and simply state whether you have photographic evidence.
I am collecting names of customers that have had similar problems. Europcar must be prevented from carrying out their unethical practices.

Never book again

Never book again! My worst experience ever with car rental company. Communication and customer service in English just does not exist. Although I used their official channel to make a complaint they never replied. I had a pre-paid contract through an agency but they overcharged me for 268 euros through a form with small letters in German. I was clearly trapped!

★☆☆☆☆ DO NOT USE EUROPCAR GERMANY

★☆☆☆☆ DO NOT USE EUROPCAR GERMANY

I rented a car from 21 to 23 March 2026, Dortmund to Bergisch Gladbach. Agreed price 268 EUR, they charged 368 EUR. 100 EUR deposit.

I contacted them on 01.04.2026, case 25987206. On 07.04.2026 they replied: deposit already refunded, contact your bank. No proof, no ARN reference number.

It is now June 2026 and I still have not received my 100 EUR. Emails are ignored. Terrible customer service.

When you rent a car from Europcar in…Bait and switch: wrong car category, no refund

When you rent a car from Europcar in Germany, they give you a lower category vehicle and refuse to refund the price difference. This way they rent out their cars at inflated prices and rip people off. If you don't want to get scammed, avoid this company. Despite all complaints, you are completely ignored — I felt treated with outright discrimination as a foreigner. I'm saying this especially to tourists visiting Germany: they will scam you.

I am very very disappointed

I am writing this review to share my experience with Europcar, which was extremely disappointing from start to finish.

I booked and paid for a specific rental vehicle through the website, but upon arrival I was not given the vehicle I had paid for. Instead, I was provided with a filthy, damaged vehicle and was required to pay additional charges to drive it, along with a £200 deposit.

No member of staff accompanied me to inspect the vehicle before collection. Fortunately, I took photographs of the vehicle and documented the condition it was in before leaving. The issues included:

* The vehicle did not lock properly.
* The seats and door panels were heavily stained.
* Rubbish had been left inside the vehicle.
* The carpets were dirty and ripped.
* Wires were hanging out from underneath the dashboard.
* The overall condition of the vehicle was unacceptable.

I was also required to pay for a full tank of fuel, and I returned the vehicle with a full tank as instructed.

The vehicle was unpleasant to drive and fell far below the standard I would expect from a professional rental company. When I returned the car, I left it in the same condition as when I received it. Despite this, I was later accused of causing damage that was already present when the vehicle was handed over to me.

To make matters worse, only £44 of my £200 deposit was returned, despite the condition of the vehicle being fully documented by photographs taken before I left the rental location.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Europcar to anyone. I feel that customers are being treated unfairly, and the condition of the vehicle I received was completely unacceptable. I am extremely dissatisfied with both the vehicle provided and the way this matter has been handled
