A Return to The Falmouth Hotel
This was our second stay at The Falmouth Hotel. We noted that the main areas have been redecorated since our last visit. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, largely due to the hotel's location and the staff's good service.
Key Highlight: The Bay Views
The best part of our stay was the views of the bay and surrounding area.
Arrival and Accessibility
Upon arrival, the hotel looks impressive. However, accessibility can be challenging. The main entrance has a few shallow steps, and other exits, which we used occasionally due to work blocking the main entrance, have deep steps. This is something to consider for guests with mobility concerns.
Accommodation: Updated Rooms, Cooling Needs Improvement
Our room was clean, and the decor also seemed updated since our last stay. The bed and room were comfortable enough. All in-room amenities, including Wi-Fi, worked well. The Wi-Fi offered good coverage and sufficient bandwidth for browsing and streaming.
A key point of feedback relates to the room's ventilation. The window opened only a small amount, and with high temperatures day and night, the provided fan was often insufficient. Air conditioning would be a significant improvement, especially during warmer periods.
Dining Experience: Varied Menu, Inconsistent Breakfast
The hotel bar has a good selection of drinks. The restaurant offered a reasonable menu, including daily specials like soup, a starter, and a catch of the day, in addition to the standard menu. The food was generally of good quality, with some interesting options; Ramen was popular. I particularly enjoyed the Teriyaki Chicken, which was well-flavoured. While the food quality was good, I felt the pricing was a bit high for the menu's style, especially given current costs.
Breakfast was generally acceptable but inconsistent. This was mainly due to items appearing to be batch-cooked and kept warm for too long. This resulted in very overcooked fried and poached eggs, and bacon that was almost too hard to cut. I provided this feedback at reception upon check-out, hoping it will be addressed. It's important for servers to identify and prevent such quality issues before food reaches guests. We found it helpful to specify how we wanted our eggs cooked, for example, "eggs over-easy."
Staff and Service: Good Performance
The staff at The Falmouth Hotel performed well. They were consistently friendly, approachable, and did their best to assist guests. Their efforts positively contributed to our stay.
Location and Local Parking
The hotel's location is good, about a kilometre from Falmouth town centre, making it walkable for most. If driving into town, several car parks are available, but they fill quickly, so an early start is recommended. We had an issue with the Maritime Car Park, which tried to charge us £105 for a 90-minute stay, seemingly due to its ANPR system incorrectly logging our previous visit. We will avoid that car park in the future.
Value for Money & Recommendation
While some dining aspects felt overpriced, the overall experience, combined with the location and staff service, still offered reasonable value.
Overall, I would recommend The Falmouth Hotel. It is a pleasant place, and the staff consistently work to look after their guests, making for a good stay.
