Intuitive and easy to use
Intuitive and easy to use. I was surprised how well I could research a perfectly ordinary family line where I had little direct contact other than with my father who died many years before I started researching his family.

I disliked the first search page
I disliked the first search page. I needed to be able to put in parents, spouses or siblings or more details to make the search more precise, especially with a common surname.
I love the newspapers. I was also delighted to find the birth registration of a child born whilst their father was serving in the Army in Bermuda! So that is a good and helpful option. Parish Registers.

When opening the initial search page you'll be presented with the option to search across all records, though by restricting to a particular record type you will see more specific filters.
Selecting to search marriages will show the option to add a spouse for example, selecting census will allow "Other household member,"
Though we do offer an "optional keyword" filter where you could add a spouse name for example which would help return relevant records.

Excellent customer service!
I’ve been a long time subscriber of the British Newspaper Archive. Today I had some difficulties getting onto the site, as I’d not visited the archive for some time. Jamie in customer services was excellent, and sorted the issue out straight away. I’m loving the new-look site (it’s much easier to access)

Read the small print...if you can find it!
Easy to sign up and pay for the subscription but not so easy to cancel.
I'm currently trapped in a 12 month contract unless I pay £35 to cancel.
I went through the cancellation process in July and received an email stating I had cancelled but the subscriptions kept being taken from my card.
When I asked why I was told that I needed to pay £35 to cancel. This must have been in the very small small print somewhere, so be careful!

It looks like you have registered for our 12 Month Everything Monthly subscription which allows you to spread the cost of your 12 month subscription across 12 instalments of £16.99. It is clearly noted as being a 12 month subscription and before you active it you need to tick a box to confirm that you agree to the terms and conditions. These are linked on the tick-box itself so they're easy to find.
We do have a rolling 1 Month Everything subscription which costs £24.49 per month, and I believe this is what you were looking for when you agreed to the 12 month plan

I subscribe to Findmypast and Ancestry…
I subscribe to Findmypast and Ancestry and both are excellent sites for family history. One feature at Ancestry which I miss at Findmypast is the automatic listing of other records relating to the same person when undertaking research. Hence four stars rather than five stars.

I found a lot of information locked, requiring further fees.
I was offered a free 7 day trial, so registered and began my search. I found most items I wanted to view 'blocked' and encouraged to increase my membership at the end of the free trial. Most items were 'Exclusive' to Findmypast and I saw the membership fee increase every time I wanted to view newspaper reposts, war reports, some burials and wills & probate. I cancelled the original membership within the 7 day free period. I now understand that all UK libraries have free access to everything I wanted to view.

Disappointed in lack of worldwide records
The search facility was easy to use. Good for searching UK records.
Disappointed that the records outside of the UK/US were sparse. In particular, there didn't seem to be anything listed outside of UK/Ireland/US/Canada/Australia/New Zealand despite advertising that suggested a wider database. Also that often the original documents could not be viewed although these could be found elsewhere.

Excellent customer service from Sophie
I contacted Findmypast because the wrong image was showing against a military record I was researching.
Sophie looked into it for me, got the data team involved and came back to explain that the pages were out of sequence. She also found the correct record and sent me a direct link to it.
It might sound like a small thing, but it really helped with my family research and saved me a lot of frustration.
