Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 77 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers encountered significant payment processing issues, such as declined credit cards, unexpected charges, and confusion about their funds. Reviewers also reported unhelpful customer support and difficulties with specific tax forms, including forms being deleted or problems with e-filing and amendments. Many found unexpected costs for state filing or additional services, contradicting their expectation of a free service. However, some customers found the platform easy to use and straightforward, appreciating its simple, modern interface and transparent pricing, which was often significantly more affordable than competitors for federal and state filing.

Lost EITC, now have balance due

I used FreeTaxUSA for both my federal and state income tax returns. I needed to file amendments for both.

My printed state income tax return did not include the required information (DATE OF BIRTH) to claim the Earned income tax credit for my state. I then lost my tax credit when I amended and was hit with a balance due. All because their stupid software could not input the proper fields that are required. This small detail has cost me.

In reaching out for support, they were absolutely useless to help. They claimed DOB is not required to claim the credit, yet it is clearly stated right on the EITC form. I have no idea how they are able to continue operating when they don't even follow the basic tax form requirements.

I will never use them again, nor recommend them to anyone. Not worth the hassle they have put me through!

Freetaxusa.com - First of all IT IS NOT FREE

First of al IT IS NOT FREE! I filed my taxes with bad information from Freetaxusa.com. The IRS found errors so I thought I would check to see if I amended my return the problem be fixed. I used their amend process and low and behold it showed an error on the part of the IRS so I went ahead and purchased the amended return for an additional $15. After I paid, my return showed that the IRS was actually correct. So apparently Freetaxusa pulled some kind of software scam to get me to pay for something I didn't need. They refused to refund my money although I had proof it was their software and ignored any further emails I sent them. Stay clear of these crooks!

Best experience in decades.

FreeTaxUSA has been the most accurate, in depth tax prep website out of several I've tried. The forms are simple to fill out and have links that help inform users instantly more detailed explanation of what is being asked. I had the fastest, kindest, briefest and best support ever, and it saved me money where I would have paid money unnecessarily. I got a text that my return was accepted by IRS in less than a minute of e-filing and 5 minutes later a follow up email with info on how long it usually takes for a refund. Wow!

Exceptional Service for Tax Return

I am so happy to have been helped by FreeTaxUSA for the last 3 years in filing my Tax Return. As an old man in 80's with limited computer skills, I appreciate their help in guiding me through. Hope they will continue providing this service as long as I live.

Better Than TurboTax, But There Are Annoying Issues

For several years in a row, I have used FreeTax and my wife has used TurboTax, and we don't quit until we come up with the same number. The interesting part is when we sit down and try to figure out our differences. Based on this I can say with certainty that FreeTaxUSA is better (and cheaper).

Having said that, FreeTaxUSA has some issues that I find almost unbelievable. Things like having to enter information from a single K-1 up to three times. And far too many times, if you don't click the little question mark to get more information about something, you'll enter a wrong value. Taking an example from the Colorado deductions page, this sounds very clear: "Enter your total charitable contributions made during 2021:". But it's not. If you clicked the question mark, you'd find out that they really meant "Enter your total charitable contributions made during 2021 AND NOT ALREADY DEDUCTED ON THE FEDERAL FORM:".

Sure, if you're filing a 1040-EZ

Okay for tax returns so simple you could've done them on paper anyway. The software is user-friendly enough, but just try to enter the codes for a K-1 form! Half of them aren't supported. Oh well, you get what you pay for.

FreeTaxUSA worked fine for my simple…

FreeTaxUSA worked fine for my simple needs. TurboTax has a slightly better interface and a bit more automation but I got for free what TB tax wanted $100 for (because unemployment does not qualify for free filing at TT and then they tack on +$50 to file state) so I'm satisfied with FTUSA. Both came up with the exact same returns. Got more then what I paid for (I paid nothing). E-file was quick.

No support

I've been using this service for multiple years with no problems. This year (2021), instead of receiving my tax refund, I received a letter from the IRS with my name and address and someone else's SS#. They will not send my tax refund because they believe my return was a result of identity theft. I've spent hours trying to get through to the IRS without success. Someone suggested I contact freetaxusa to make them aware of the situation because it's possible my return was hacked using their software. Freetaxusa provides no support, not even a # to call them unless I upgrade to a deluxe package. I was able to e-mail them, but they will provide no support other than "call the IRS."

After 4 years of asking them there's…

After 4 years of asking them there's still no support for HSA interest or div reporting on my California taxes. So really, the state tax is incomplete. I wouldn't be surprised if their other state support is also incomplete.
Sadly I'll be switching, sadly for me because I'll need to reenter all the data into turbo tax.

Outstanding

If preparing taxes can be a pleasant experience, preparing returns for 2021 never went so smoothly.
In the past I've used TurboTax, and used them for decades. Without exception, TurboTax has never disappointed in presenting annoying and time-consuming problems. Last year, in frustration, I just snail-mailed my return to the IRS.
For the first time, this year, I tried FreeTaxUSA. Not a glitch happened. FreeTaxUSA's program is intuitively and well organized. If you need an explanation, you can easily find it. Explanations are easy-to-understand and you are not required to first wade through unnecessary junk.
This morning, within a couple hours, my Fed and state returns were prepared and e-filed. By the time lunch was over, I'd received word that the Fed return had been accepted. This never, ever happened so quickly with TurboTax.
WOW! Am I impressed with FreeTaxUSA.

Been using them for years. Excellent company!

I've been using Free Tax USA for years. Simple, easy, accurate software. I recommend them highly. The only thing I don't like is that I don't file state taxes and it's hell to try to get around that to the end of your federal return. I forget how to do it every year and usually end up emailing them. They have an outstanding customer service email system. Thanks Free Tax USA!!

First Time User

I used FreeTax USA this year for the first time. As a former TaxAct user I can honestly say this was much easier and still very thorough. It had all the bases covered. It was easy and straightforward. I don’t have a very complex return, some investments and interest. But it did everything I needed and more. I filed my federal and state return through them and the fees for e filing were reasonable and I look forward to using it again next year. Good product

Sometimes free isn’t worth it.

Filled my 2020 state and federal tax return with freetaxusa.com. It seemingly went off with out a problem. I was able to send them in by Jan. 28th. I owed the state, but was supposedly getting $1,906.00 for my federal refund. It seemed a little more than what I’ve gotten back in the past, but I thought it might have something to do with COVID. Refunds were taking about 21 days to get direct deposited. 5 to 6 weeks had gone by. I emailed freetaxusa.com. They stated they had no information once it was excepted by the IRS. Then I discovered, on the IRS website, my refund was going to be $600.00 less. Emailed freetaxusa.com. They stated I would have to contact the IRS. On Mar. 24 I finally got a direct deposit of $1,273.06. Apparently $32.94 was deducted for the tax correction. Next year I’m going back to Turbo Tax. This was a live and learn tax season for me.
