Its parent company, Latitude, is reportedly facing a potential $85M penalty in Australia over misleading advertising—hardly reassuring.
Whether intentional or not, this feels misleading. For a financial provider, that’s unacceptable. Proceed with caution.

I can absolutely confirm what some of the other people voiced. I used Gem to buy necessary appliances when needed and that part all went super smooth and easy. I have a very high credit score overall and make sure I pay all my bills up front, my Gem makes it super difficult for people to be able to do that. Your account is not setup for direct debit automatically and even if you setup your account on their app, it still does not work. You need to print and fill in the application and post it to them like back in 1986. Due to the lack of correspondence you are still at risk of failing at this attempt. It is like they want you to miss the first, second or any payment for that matter so xan start charging you interest you would think is free by default. Fraudulent behaviour on their behalf to scam customers into losing money.

Their system is designed to charge you interest, so every time you pay back you have to call them otherwise your money goes to higher interest account. There is no protection against 'no service' from merchant, so if you are scammed you have lost your money. Most of the support provided by chat bots, so your left with seeking legal advice or lawyers for your basic disputes!

As if the GEM Visa nightmare wasn't already bad enough, they have just updated the terms and conditions so you DON'T get 6 months interest free automatically, instead, you have a limited time to go online and apply for it AFTER the sale. And now, all overseas purchases (including online) NO LONGER QUALIFY for 6 months interest free. This is all on top of the long list of deceitful practices you can already read about in other reviews. If you have this card, pay it off and get rid of it. If you are thinking about getting one, honestly, just don't do it.
BEWARE OF GEM
I am disappointed with my experience with Gem. Despite requesting the issuance of a new account due to recurring unauthorized payments—regardless of whether new cards are issued—the issue persists. I have contacted approximately seven different customer service representatives without receiving a satisfactory resolution. Consequently, I have filed a formal complaint.
It would have been straightforward to close the existing account and reissue a new one, but this was not done promptly. Since the unauthorized payments began in September, the issues remain unresolved. Additionally, communication with staff has been challenging, as there has been conflicting information, and explanations have often been unclear. At one point, I was told an investigation had been conducted, only to be informed a month later that no investigation was ever initiated.
Due to these ongoing issues, I have decided to close my account and seek alternative services. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Gem.

Latitude Financial/GEM VISA are easily the worst financial company I have dealt with. I deal with 7 others.
It starts with the multiple different websites (making huge potential risk running into scammers), and most recently not being able to log-in to my account.
Their customer service is slow to respond, an issue response to arrive within a week is now 2 1/2 weeks (& counting), and they insist I install Google Chrome to resolve. I told them it would not happen but it just went in circles.
A quick search (even googles own search) will show the security risks with Chrome & why I refuse to use it.
Recently, not being able to access my account/statement had resulted in a penalty as I was unaware of their won charges being added & so underpaid.
Their 2023 cyber attack (with millions of customers details stolen) was no surprise, and a AFAC report, in Aug 2025, shows some 180 customers still have complaints to be resolved.

I want to share my experience with Gem Visa (Latitude Gem Visa) to help others make an informed decision before using their finance services.
When you take finance from them, they don’t clearly tell you that everything must be paid back within six months. They make the process confusing on purpose, so you don’t fully understand the repayment terms.
Their interest rates are extremely high. You might think you’re getting a good deal, but in reality, you can end up paying almost three times the amount you borrowed.
For example:
If you borrow $2,000, you might end up paying back around $6,000 if you don’t pay the full amount within the six-month period.
After that period, you must pay off everything in full and close your account. Otherwise, they keep adding extra fees and charges that pile up quickly — costs you would never imagine.
They won’t explain this clearly when you first buy something. They make it sound easy and attractive, but it’s a trap.
👉 My advice: Avoid borrowing from this company at all costs. They operate in a way that feels like a scam.
Please think twice and read all the fine print carefully. Don’t get caught like I did.

Gem Latitude have taken over my personal loan from Kiwibank Latitude and my gosh the people on the customer service line have NO idea what they're doing or talking about and get extremely rude! Get told a different story every time you speak to someone. They Will confirm something verbally on the phone but Apparently they have no facility to do this by email and ALSO have no records of any letters or notices for anything overdue, don't understand what a credit report is, and that they are reporting a default incorrectly causing extreme stress and damage to a credit score! Refuse to transfer you to anyone senior or recognise the issue. STAY AWAY.

What a shock. Total scam Company. I borrowed $3000 for a iPhone. end up paying Kept keying instalments for 3 years. paid more than $2500 and when I asked how much balance remaining they said $2700. I used what happened to the instalments I have been paying for 3 years.

To speak to a human rep is impossible.
As far as credit purposes Gem is great, they have many interest loan periods, However, to contact their helpline is impossible. When you call their number (which you have to search for online, its not even available on their app), you get a 5min recorded msg before you can get through to talk to a human. I've phone them 3 times in the last couple of weeks and the first 2 times it took at least 15min before I got to talk to a human. There is a chatbot on their website, which will lead you to generic answers, but when you need specifics this is no good. There is NO email address to contact. Seriously just to contact them and ask a simple question is impossible. So long as you use the credit system wisely it works as well as any other interest free credit system. But contact is impossible. Unfortunately, when you do get through to speak to a human accents are very difficult to understand. If Gem would review their contact processes it would make it way easier and I'm sure they would get more customers.
