I signed up for the 6x6 Volleyball…

I signed up for the 6x6 Volleyball League and the whole thing got off on the wrong foot from the start.
First, the league was pushed back by three weeks because of venue issues on Go Mammoth’s side. This is a paid organised league run by a business and people arrange their schedules around it. You wouldn’t expect events to suddenly get pushed back by weeks because organisers couldn’t secure a venue properly, so it already felt badly managed from day one.

After waiting those extra weeks, we finally got organised into teams only to end up in a team that was short on players.

Then we received an email about the new forfeit policy saying:

“If your team forfeits a match one match fee will be added to your statement, this goes towards refunding your opposition for the cancelled match.”

That felt pretty outrageous considering the teams weren’t properly filled in the first place. It basically felt like teams could end up being financially penalised for problems that weren’t their fault. Are people supposed to magically field a full team no matter what or risk getting charged extra? or you saying we need to show up and play volleyball or else pay?

What makes it more frustrating is that the first game was actually really good fun. Everyone enjoyed it, the atmosphere was great, and it finally felt like the league was properly starting.

Then, after all the delays and build-up, the entire league got cancelled one day after the first game because of even more venue issues.

So after delaying the start, putting people into underfilled teams, introducing penalties for forfeits, and wasting everyone’s time organising around the schedule, the league gets cancelled after one game.

Really disappointing and honestly just poor organisation from start to finish.

The greatest sport in the world.

I play in a recreational basketball league called Go Mammoth, and I’m not even exaggerating when I say it’s a straight 10 out of 10 experience.

Everything about it is just done properly. Games start on time, teams are organised, and the level is exactly what you want. It’s competitive, but it never gets toxic or stupid. You can go hard, talk a bit, actually enjoy the run, and still leave in a good mood whether you win or lose.

The runs themselves are quality too. You’re not out there wasting time. It actually feels like proper basketball, not just chaos.

But honestly, as good as the league is, the main thing I need to talk about is the referee.

Spyros. The incredible Spyros.

I’m telling you now, he’s easily the best referee I’ve seen in the UK. Recreational or not.

His whole style is just calm. No ego, no extra nonsense, no trying to be the centre of attention. He just controls the game properly. Everything is clear, everything is consistent, and players actually respect him.

That’s rare.

He lets the game flow when it should flow, especially with physical play, but the moment something needs to be called, it’s called. No hesitation, no guessing. And if there’s ever a question, he’ll actually explain it instead of brushing you off.

It just makes the whole game feel fair.

And that’s the key thing. You never come off the court thinking the officiating was dodgy or inconsistent. You just get on with playing.

Even when things start to get a bit heated, he shuts it down before it turns into anything. No drama, no big scenes, just control.

You can tell he actually understands basketball as well, not just the rulebook. He reads the game properly. He knows what’s intentional, what’s just contact, what needs a whistle and what doesn’t.

That’s a big difference.

Honestly, he makes the whole experience better. Simple as that.

So yeah, Go Mammoth as a league is already top tier. Organisation, level, atmosphere, all of it is on point.

But with Spyros refereeing, it goes up another level completely.

If you’re playing in it, you already know.
If you’re not, you’re missing out.

From the best shooter in the league 🫡

A welcoming community

Games run throughout the year and people who play are friendly and welcoming! The umpires are reliable and keep us on track, offering tips to improve along the way. The communication with go mammoth is generally okay but there could be more info/explanation given about price rises instead of just seeing a large increase on our team statement.

Playing rounders in summer with Go Mammoth is a highlight of my summer. I was a little nervous to meet my team but they are absolutely fantastic. There are adults from every age group, united by the fact that we just want to have fun. It doesn’t matter your ability, it’s great fitness and a beautiful way to spend an evening.

Recreational Volleyball League (Poplar)

It took a few weeks after the stated start date to get enough players to form the league but once it started it was exactly what I was hoping for; turn up and play. Everyone was friendly, the facilities are great (at Poplar) and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
Note that you are signing up for games not coaching so do your homework and come knowing the rules and positioning but other people will help you if you're new.

A Weekly Highlight Away From Home

Moving to London on my own was pretty overwhelming at first, but joining Go Mammoth netball made a bigger difference than I expected. It gave me something familiar each week and helped me settle in so much quicker. The social side has been the best part — everyone’s been so welcoming and it’s made meeting people feel really easy. The umpires are always friendly and fair, and the organisers do such a great job keeping everything running smoothly, which makes the whole experience stress-free. It’s now a genuine highlight of my week and something I always look forward to.
