Avoid this company

I brought my Polo GTI+ from Gravelwoods on 7th December 2024. A month after purchase the EML light showed on my dash saying the battery was not charging. I took the car to my local VW garage for a diagnostic scan, this scan showed an intermittent generator fault, it also showed the same fault had been cleared on 8th October 2024 so was pre-existing when I purchased the car. I e-mailed Gravelwoods with the fault to have this repaired under warranty & I was told the warranty does not cover this type of fault as it was “wear & tear”! I then sent the Consumer Rights Act to Tony which clearly says they have 1 chance to repair a fault after 30 days & within 6 months. I was then e-mailed by Tony saying they would NOT be paying for the repair & do not quote Consumer Law to us as we are acting within it & you have purchased a used car? After a few e-mails stating they do have to repair this under the Consumer Act & if I had wanted no rights I would have brought privately he finally agreed to pay the majority of the cost. He then backtracked & said they would pay £250 towards the cost of the repair or I could take the car back to their garage for scanning etc. As I had lost all faith in them I was not taking my car back to them, the part alone was £467 without labour so not the majority as originally stated by him. Tony also stated that the alternator was a serviceable part but when asked the recommended replacement interval or anywhere stated such by VW, he had no answer and kept going around the houses.

Their “warranty” isn’t worth the paper its written on so if you have a fault be prepared for them to try to wriggle out of it. This seems to be a common theme on the reviews & I wish I’d read them before purchasing from them. I would never purchase from them again.

Internet car purchase

For many years I have bought my cars from a main franchised dealer and was reluctant to try outside of the network. I was looking through autotrader and found what appeared to be exactly what I was looking for at a sensible price. The problem was that. I am in Dorset and the dealer was in Kent. The owner sent me a detailed video of the car, which seemed very promising however the problem remained how I would get it. Gravelwood offer a free delivery service up to 300 miles and although I was very nervous about parting with a large sum of money without physically seeing the car and having the opportunity to drive it, I was sufficiently reassured by the owner that I decided to take a chance. The car arrived exactly when expected and exceeded my expectations as it was truly immaculate. I would have no hesitation in recommending this dealer as the service I received exceeded that of a franchised main dealer. Thank you Tony

Terrible experience

I've had two bad experiences with this company. The first is when I visited to view a car which according to the salesman had full service history, when reviewing the documentation on arrival it was clear it was overdue its most recent service. The second was when I rang and asked about test driving a car I fully intended on purchasing, they said they do not offer test drives and stated that I wasn't qualified to know if anything was wrong with the car. That was quite rude, making an assumption without knowing my background at all. The audacity and rudeness of the sales person was quite shocking to be honest. In my many years experience buying sports cars, I've never encountered a seller who wasn't willing to let me test drive a car before purchasing. I would not recommend this company.
