Very disappointing, Gr Hotels don’t care
To whom it may concern.
We recently were told by friends who came from Scotland and stayed at the Bridge Hotel, Piercebridge for four days to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They told us that it was their second stay and their last.
Their first stay, some time ago, was excellent but the awful food and their dowdy room spoilt what was their wedding anniversary celebration.
Last Christmas Day my wife and I together with a friend (a local Durham councillor) ate at the George and, although it was expensive the whole Christmas Lunch was excellent.
Based upon that I recently booked for the three of us for this next Christmas Day lunch and paid £75 deposit.
Having been told that the hotel restaurant had declined we decided to visit for Sunday lunch today (20/09/26) to see if the report was true.
We visited today for lunch and although it was not expensive it was very disappointing. So much so that I wish to cancel the Christmas Day booking.
We arrived a little early and were greeted by a pleasant and polite lady. We ordered drinks which promptly arrived. I ordered beef and my wife ordered Chicken lunches.
The food arrived with the gravy on the food.
The plates were cold
The Chicken was very bland and tasteless and my beef was very tough to eat.
The cooked parsnip's were tough.
The carrots were juicy and pleasant
The potato was OK but a little watery.
On the plate was a watery purée of something orange in
Colour. It didn’t taste of swede or carrot in fact it was a tasteless, well I don’t know what it was.
I ordered a side dish of cauliflower cheese but the thick cauliflower stalks were very tough.
The dinning room was cold and my dear wife felt it greatly.
We left prematurely.
We were going to have desserts but the meal left us wanting to leave.
I actually left feeling hungry .
To sum up today’s dining experience; I would say the service was alright (there were only 5 of us there) but the dining experience was awful.
I will be cancelling the Christmas Day Lunch and hope to get my £75 returned.
As a footnote; my wife and I sometimes go to the Firs Hotel in Crook, for Sunday lunch. It is very, very popular and always we have to queue. The food is brilliant and plentiful but it does not have tough vegetables or mush.
Perhaps the managers of the George should go to see how they serve their food.
The George Hotel is not well represented by the View Restaurant!
