Considering 253 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently struggled with unexpected hidden charges, additional fees that were not clearly communicated, and sudden price increases after completing their vehicle bookings. Customers described the support teams as completely unresponsive and unhelpful when trying to resolve complicated billing and deposit disputes. Reviewers also noted that local counter employees were often rude, dismissive, or completely indifferent to customer concerns. Some reviewers were happy with specific individual employees, describing them as exceptionally polite, patient, professional, and genuinely welcoming. I’m still battling after being forced to upgrade.mi had a Jet2 booking with a car but Fabio in HURTZ said car was no good as no charging in villa or Frigliana so I must upgrade but they were short of cars. I signed for an upgrade of €60. I am a stroke survivor, due to driving at same time, extra brain injury, associated dyslexia and poor sight. Only when we got to villa, did my wife, who was ill that day and not at the counter, see it was €60 a day for 14 days. They say I signed this silly card, not a pepper contract but tough. HSBC haven’t been helpful at all. I’ll move my account and my numerous savings, then I can say tough…..

Booked a van

Booked a van, used for 3 hours and paid. Simple, quick service all via mobile Hertz 24.

1 month later receive an invoice of traffic violation, a bridge the van crossed and didnt pay. Money was taken from my account without any prior notice or chance to dispute.
A)I never went over this bridge
B)On closer inspection of the fine, the crossing was on a completely different date to my rental
The company are impossible to get through to and dispite email, using chat bot, you get nowhere.
Avoid !

Refuelling rip off

Upon collection, despite Hertz having my credit card on file they insisted on me paying a £226 refuelling charge (in case I didn't bring back the car full of fuel.)
Charge deducted immediately and registered on my credit card immediately.
I return the car full, it is checked and confirmed as full by Hertz but upon enquiry about my refuelling refund I am told I need to send in documentation to back up my claim(!) and can then take up to 11 days.
What an absolute rip off when they already have my credit card on file and could just charge at the end. Also mystified at how Hertz arrive at £226 refuel charge for a compact SUV with a 50 L tank!

Overcharged me after the rental despite saying there would be no additional charges when I returned the car. None of their call lines work, they either don't exist as a number or hangup on you before reaching a human. The online chat is the only contact. The online chat just resulted in an open case for me which they said they would get back to me on and never do.

HERTZ HEATHROW RUNS A CONGESTION CHARGE SCAM ON TOURISTS. $700 STOLEN.

Read the other low reviews. There’s a pattern. Hertz doesn’t just provide bad service — they operate a system designed to extract hundreds of dollars from international tourists who don’t know how London works. Here’s exactly how they did it to me.

I rented a car from Hertz Heathrow in February 2026. London has a "Congestion Charge" — a £15/day fee to drive into central London. There are no toll booths. No barriers. No transponders. You have to register online before you drive in. This system does not exist anywhere in the United States.

Hertz said NOTHING about it. Not a word at the counter. No leaflet. No add-on offered. Nothing. They handed me the keys and let me drive straight into a trap.

Three drives into London. Three £90 penalties. Hertz paid the fines WITHOUT telling me, then slapped my credit card with the penalties PLUS £42 in "admin fees" PER VIOLATION. Total: over £560 ($700+). The £42 fee is pure profit — Hertz charges you for processing a problem they deliberately created by not informing you.

But here’s where it turns from negligence into fraud.

When I complained, Hertz told me IN WRITING to appeal the fines with the authorities and they’d refund me. So I did. I spent FIVE MONTHS appealing to Transport for London, Camden Council, and the independent London Tribunals.

Every single authority said the same thing: we need written authorization from Hertz before we can hear your case.

Every single time, Hertz delayed until the deadline passed:
• TfL gave 14 days. Hertz responded 3 days LATE.
• The independent Tribunal gave 14 days. Hertz responded 22 days LATE — six days after the case was PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
• Camden Council says Hertz’s authorization was never received AT ALL.

The ONE penalty I could appeal without Hertz’s involvement? Successfully cancelled. My appeals had merit. Hertz made sure the others could never be heard.

And by the time every appeal was dead, I was outside my credit card’s dispute window. My bank tried to get Hertz to refund even just the admin fees. Hertz refused. They ran out every clock — the appeal deadlines, the tribunal deadline, and the credit card dispute window.

This is not incompetence. Incompetence doesn’t produce the same result every single time across every single deadline for five months. This is a company that profits from not informing tourists, profits from the admin fees on the resulting penalties, and then slow-walks every resolution until your options expire.

Hertz Heathrow is not a car rental counter. It’s the front end of a penalty-fee machine.

DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ AT HEATHROW. If you must, record the employee at the counter on your phone and ask them directly: "Are there any charges for driving in London that I need to know about?" Get it on video. Because when the fines come, they will pretend they told you.

Rental Agreement 244353874. Every word of this is documented. This review was rewritten with the help of AI.

Hertz likes to s...w its customers

After renting a car at Hertz, I suddenly received an extra charge of GBP 102 at my credit card statement. Hertz did not have the decency to contact me to let me know there would be an extra charge, or to let me know what the extra charge was for. I filed a complaint at the credit card company and they went out to investigate. After a while they were given information by Hertz that I was given a parking fine for GBP 60, on top of which they added an adiministration fee of GBP 42.

I am good with having to pay the fine, because they provided information where it happened. Yet adding such a steep fee, and not communicating about it, is unforgivable. What a poor way to treat your customers.

The very very worst and my biggest…

The very very worst and my biggest regret .
Renting with hertz. Glasgow . So stressful . Ruined my holiday .
Any call for enquire is just pressing one and the same message to press number each time then you are cut off. Multiple transfers that don’t work and no one know anything
No training for staff at all :
I made a reservation in Glasgow - they charged me as a deposit 300 for fuel at 5 pounds a litre. More than double the fuel rate in uk . But everyone returns the fuel tank filled up . Then they say they will return the 300 in 30 days. But can be transferred in a day or two by normal transfer in uk . Card to bank . But no : hold onto it . I filled the tank fuel on return . They just hold onto cash still .
Now the latest :
I see a charge for a hertz on a day well before my rental day .
They can’t do it anything I ask for this below :
Now I see I am charged 299 at Heathrow on the 6 July. They don’t know anything about renting or refunds even tho they are a huge office near Heathrow: they know nothing . I never was anywhere near Heathrow. They can’t do any enquiry on the computer for me. Has to keep asking someone in the back - back and forth about renting . But it’s Hertz and that’s the company - renting cars out .
Unbelievable . In this day and age .

Very Poor Hertz UK

@HertzUK. My wife is requesting urgent assistance with compliant #34471166. My wife raised this matter as an urgent safety issue and received an acknowledgement on 15th July advising that a response would be provided within 5 working days. However, she has not received a substantive update.

My wife has attempted to contact Hertz by telephone but has been unable to reach a human adviser through the listed contact numbers.

This matter requires resolution before she needs to drive again on 22 July as the delay is affecting her ability to arrange a suitable replacement vehicle.

Please can a senior Customer Relations handler review this urgent and contact my wife with an update - details in the original complaint.

No more Hertz

Returning the car, they noticed a small scratch on one of the rim near the tire. Almost invisible but with a red light it was noticeable. When the scratch would be facing the floor nobody could see it. They charged 286 euro ! Completely insane. Contract 797992182 I disagree completely and want that money back or my organization will never rent a car with Hertz.

Bait & Switch

Same problem I encountered at Hertz Heathrow Airport in 2018. Has a confirmed rental agreement for the car I wanted made 3 weeks in advance. When I went to pick up the car after an overnite flight, was told the car was not available, and no other cars like it available (they have hundreds of cars in their lot, so hard to believe). Only car I could rent was an upgrade for $550. This is simple Bait-and-Switch fraud. But I needed the car to get to an appointment and paid. Will be bringing complaints against Hertz with the FBI Internet Fraud site, my state Attorney General, and the UK BVRLA, for all it will do.

Total service failure from Hertz 24/7 - missing key and wrongful charges!

I booked a van through the Hertz 24/7 app today. When I unlocked the vehicle, there was NO KEY inside. Customer service couldn't provide any alternative vehicle nearby, so the booking had to be canceled. I wasted an hour of my time at the location due to their operational error.

To make things worse, they held £120 from my account (but their app support claims it was only £50) and they are refusing to refund the £5 membership fee, claiming my account is active! Why should I pay a membership fee when you failed to provide the basic service? Absolutely shocking customer service and dishonest billing. I want my full refund of £120 + £5 immediately! Booking Ref:)

Car from Hertz in Birmingham

We rented a car from Hertz in Birmingham. After we returned to Sweden, I received two emails informing me that I had been issued two parking fines, which Hertz had already paid on my behalf. The amounts for these fines, along with Hertz’s administrative fees (£84), were then deducted from my account.
I appealed the fines because I had paid for the parking and have the receipt as proof. I contacted Hertz, the hotel (which has an agreement with the parking operator), the parking company, and the company that issued the parking fines, and I have been waiting for their responses.
While I was waiting, Hertz sent me a third email regarding a third parking fine, stating that they had also paid this fine and would charge my account for the amount of the fine plus an additional £42 administrative fee.
Because Hertz paid the fines immediately, the parking operator is now unable to do anything, as the cases have been closed. I am still waiting for a response from the company that issued the parking fines, but Hertz should not pay parking fines immediately without first contacting me and giving me the opportunity to explain and take any legal action.
Furthermore, Hertz is now in the process of charging me for the third fine even though there is already an open dispute regarding this parking location. At the very least, the third fine should have been put on hold until the dispute has been resolved.

An outstanding Experience

I had an outstanding experience with Hertz at Heathrow, and a huge part of that was thanks to Andy.
From the moment we arrived, Andy was exceptionally helpful, professional, and genuinely welcoming. He handled everything with remarkable efficiency, and care.
Well done Hertz, highly recommended and will use again and again.

Baffled how a multinational companay will blindly steal money from you. I paid the majority of the booking up front and they have taken it upon themselves to take the FULL amount from my deposit as well as taking further money from my account. On top of that they have charged me for a late return that didnt happen. I cannot get my head around it. Customer service is non existent

Giving 1* as no option for 0*

Giving 1* as no option for 0*. Very disappointing experience with the staff at the Hertz desk at Preveza Airport. Our flight arrived on time, but we were delayed by the immigration process at the airport, which was beyond our control. When we reached the Thrifty desk, shared with Hertz, we were told our reservation had been marked as a no-show and our car had been given away. No consideration was given for the immigration delays at the airport.
To make matters worse, the customer service was extremely poor. The staff offered little assistance, showed no understanding of the situation, and failed to provide a reasonable solution. The staff, including the manager were rude, dismissive and the manager refused to give his details. The whole experience caused unnecessary stress and disruption at the start of our holiday. We have since escalated our complaint with them and have yet to receive any further response and they will not answer the question we have asked a couple of times, what time precisely was our car given away. We went on to rent a car from Europcar, their representative at their desk said not one of his customer’s had arrived on time, some were over 2 hours late that day due to the delays getting through.
I would not recommend Hertz based on my experience. Absolutely terrible.
