They charged me for damage that was already on the car!
They didn’t give me the damage report on the day I rented the car, nor did they walk with me to check the car so I couldn’t make sure that all damage was correctly recorded.
I received a car with so much damage it was almost impossible to check everything, so I made pictures of the entire car, where you can see the damage already present.
When I returned the car, they asked me about damage which was not on their damage report (which might have been blank, because they never showed it to me)
I told them the damage was already there and I had the pictures to proof it. They didn’t need the pictures and said all was ok.
Later I saw the email with the receipt and that they had charged me for the damage of almost €400,-
Filed a complaint, sent an email, still no reaction
UNBELIEVABLE!
Hertz is attempting to charge me 250 €…
Hertz is attempting to charge me 250 € for damages that were already present when I picked up the vehicle on March 8th 2026 at San Sebastian airport.
Fortunately, I recorded a time-stamped video in the Hertz parking lot before moving the car, which clearly proves these scratches were pre-existing. The initial report was incomplete, and no agent was available for a joint inspection at pick-up or drop-off.
I have submitted all evidence to the FNOL department, but they are asking for a 10-day delay while the charge is imminent. I have already informed my credit card provider to dispute this unauthorized transaction.
I am extremely frustrated by the significant amount of time I have to waste defending myself against this baseless claim. Instead of an apology for their clerical error, I am being forced to deal with bureaucratic delays while my funds are being threatened. The mental burden and stress of having to fight this unfair process is unacceptable; it has completely tarnished my travel experience.
Very disappointing experience and a clear lack of staff at the agency. Always record a video of your rental and be prepared to spend additional hours of your precious time.
Hertz is the worst company to rent a…
Hertz is the worst company to rent a car from. They continue to send me invoices for "administration fees" regarding my rental in southern Spain.
DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY ! There is better options, trust me
DO NOT USE HERTZ !
DO NOT USE HERTZ !! They are scammers. We luckily took a video of the whole car top to bottom so glad we did as when returning the vehicle they tried to keep my deposit by saying we had put 2 scuffs on the car we nearly missed our flight home due to their rip off staff thank god we did a video to prove the marks were alreadu there !! They need reporting.

Very very unfriendly and even rude people who work at Hertz Maspalomas.
Never again will I rent a car with this company
Hertz at Tenerife airport is a…shambles!!
Hertz at Tenerife airport is a shambles. Huge queue, one person at the desk. Taking ages for each person. Then we got to the car and there was nobody there to give us the key. DO NOT USE THEM! This ruined the start of our holiday.
Secretly adds most expensive insurance products to contract
I've rented a car for 10 days at Malaga airport.
After being brought back and checked by Hertz personnel, everything was fine and accepted.
But, days later, my deposit was changed from €556 to €406. It took me 1 month to get in contact with them to verify where these charges came from.
They stated I went for;
Station Fee: €46.29
Excellent Theft Protection: €289.30
Tax Applied: €70.47
I never signed for any of these products, and they never sent over any bill specifications.
Stay far far away from them!!
Hertz Con Men
Rented a car at Malaga Airport thru Ryanair. Paid up front. Took out excess insurance locally prior to arrival as car hire firms excess insurance is excessive. Turned up at desk, presented voucher for rental and signed/initialled the agreement everywhere I was asked to. Upon return to UK my credit card was billed for £263 - for a 5 day rental - which transpired to be for excess insurance. At no time was I asked if I wanted it, just sign and initial here please. I did so without realising 5 initials were authorising acceptance of the insurance which I wasn't asked if I wanted, I didn't. Now arguing the toss with Hertz in Spain who say I've been billed for the service provided. Savvier travellers will probably laugh but for those not so savvy it probably pays to ask up front what it is your signing for and confirm there are no charges other than those your expecting.
Disappointing post-rental damage handling at Hertz Francesc Macià (Barcelona)
I rented a vehicle from Hertz | Francesc Macià (Barcelona) and had no issues during the rental itself. Unfortunately, the post-rental damage handling was extremely disappointing.
After returning the car, I was charged for a very minor cosmetic scratch on the bonnet. The mark is barely visible and can only be seen under strong artificial lighting and extreme close-up inspection. Even in Hertz’s own photos, the scratch is difficult to identify and not visible at normal viewing distance.
What makes this particularly frustrating is that the vehicle already had multiple pre-existing scratches and cosmetic damages documented in the official Vehicle Conditions Report at pick-up. Despite this, Hertz attributed a barely visible surface mark to my rental without providing dated, time-stamped pickup photos proving the bonnet was free of such marks beforehand.
Additionally, loss-of-use and administrative fees were applied for this purely cosmetic issue, with no evidence that the vehicle was taken out of service.
My attempts to resolve this directly were met with templated responses that did not address the substance of my concerns and instead shifted the burden of proof entirely to the customer.
I would strongly recommend not doing business with this company and if you do make sure to do extremely thorough inspection with detailed photos and videos before and after rental.
I would also recommend that Hertz consider an internal audit of this Barcelona branch, as a noticeable number of customers report similar post-rental damage experiences, suggesting that customer service practices at this location are poor.
Car rental with Thrifty (Seville SVX51 Aeropuerto)
My Visa Premier credit card was refused at the counter on the grounds that it was a “debit/credit” card, without any pre-authorisation attempt and without contractual justification.
As a result, I was forced to purchase additional insurance for €220.37 in order to obtain the vehicle.
The same explanation was given to other customers present at the agency that day.
A formal complaint and notice were sent to Thrifty and Hertz (case reference 30817790), but no response has been provided despite the announced timeframe.
This situation is comparable to a forced sale. Very disappointing experience.
Customer service has been informed, a case has been opened, but there has been no response despite the announced timeframe.
Version español :
Alquiler Thrifty – Oficina Sevilla SVX51 (23/11/2025).
Reclamación escrita y requerimiento formal enviados a Thrifty y Hertz (expediente n.º 30817790).
We hired a vehicle for 4 days 11th November to 15th through Thrifty,Hertz at Malaga airport. I paid a fuel deposit of £115.77 which was due to be returned on 13th December. On return of the vehicle we were greeted by an employee who inspected the vehicle, checked the fuel and we were told deposit would be returned within a day or so. The deposit was never returned. Since then Hertz have told us this was for super collision insurance , airport charges and tax. Avoid like the plague. This is a terrible company. All these reviews can't be wrong. I would have given zero if I could Richard H. I am taking this matter further
Poor Service
Choose other car rentals in Spain
We travelled from the UK to Málaga and had a confirmed car booking for collection at 12:30 PM from a month earlier. However, upon arrival we were informed that no car was available, despite the booking being confirmed. We were asked to wait and eventually received a car at 2:30 PM, resulting in a delay of approximately two hours. We were not provided any information on how much we have to wait and we asked to stand and wait in the parking slot.
This delay caused significant inconvenience, particularly as we had an unwell child, and we were hoping to leave the airport immediately to take her to our villa so she could rest. Having to wait for such a long period in these circumstances was extremely distressing.
This experience fell well below the standard of service we expected from Hertz before. When we asked for compensation, the Malaga office refused to engage in a conversation, and when we wrote to the company on their dedicated website section for complaint, they offered us a humiliating $50 voucher for our next reservation! Just fyi, we paid around £660 or $880 for that rental.
Impossible to contact
9/12
STILL NO RESPONSE DESPITE ALMOST 30 E-MAILS.
After unacceptable service @ Murcia airport (almost abandoned with 2 children aged 4 and 5) they sent a $50 credit note.
Trying to contact, anyone, to book @ Murcia Airport (sent over 12 e-mails, all ignored) is impossible.
Be aware, charges extra fees
They charged for extra services they never informed me about and I never agreed to. Follow-up has been poor. Borderline scamming their customers.
Beware of unacceptable “cleaning charges”
We just dropped our rental off at Santander Airport. We purchased extra cover, however, they decided to charge us 250 euros in “cleaning charges” despite the car being completely fine with minimal dirt. This is an extortionate amount to charge and very unacceptable. Luckily, we hadn’t made our way through security and circled back to challenge this - it felt like we were bartering with the lady at the desk. They said they would drop it to 100 euros….this is not professional at all. We will be taking this as far as necessary and be very careful for random and unexplained charges.
Fraud due to language skills
Recently we rent a car at the airport Stuttgart Germany and without our agreement the employee took advantage of the lack of language skills and foisted additional insurance on them without informing. That's fraud! Never sign anything at Hertz!!!
Avoid Herzt Spain at any cost
the most horrrible experiece i had in spain.
I rented a van, I had international license, valid passport, valid credit card and official goverment app for UAE drivers license in my phone, they dont wanted to give me the car since i dont have the plastic card with me.However the UAE license i can not drive in Spain, but they were sticking to the physical plastic card, even though its not valid for driving in Spain. Then i asked it is ok to bring a spanish person who has spanish license? they said yes. after long hassle i found someone who has license, then they said its not valid since they can not add a driver and and they can not change the booking to the person. After much hassle finally they change a hidden fee of 50EUR extra for a 65EUR booking for 2 hours a car. its not really the cost but the hassle and the rude and helpless staff of HERZT Spain! Most horrible experince! Avoid them at any cost
The most disgraceful company, Malaga airport scam
The most disgraceful company I have ever dealt with in my life. These scammers claimed the AXA insurance via reputable third party easy jet was invalid and then proceeded to charge 789 euros on top of the £450 already paid. Please avoid like the plague.
Excellent Service, Excellent Experience
We recently rented a vehicle from Hertz at Seville Airport. We had an excellent experience - because we researched A TON, read 100s of awful reviews and made sure we had enough coverage. We rented through ADAC in Germany - I even joined ADAC for 54,00 Euro per year in order to get the coverage. When we arrived at the counter, we were greeted very warmly and were told that we had nothing to worry about because we had booked the Total Coverage through ADAC. Having said that, it was 539 Euro for 17 days. You simply have to pay enough so that they don't try to upsell you. Very smooth transition/experience with Hertz.
Horrible experience!
Horrible experience!
A plastic speaker grill fell off the mini bus that I hired from Barcelona airport.
I was charged 3000 euros.....yes 3000 euros!!!!
