Avoid at all costs

Terrible terrible company. I thought they were supposed to be reputable but like many far cheaper companies, they’re crooks.

When I rented my car in France I was forced to accept additional supercover insurance even though I had third party insurance already. I was told it could not be removed and that without it I would not be able to rent a car. This doubled my rental cost and was a complete lie.

Hertz Beauvais total Scammers! Avoid Avoid Avoid!

How are Hertz getting away with scamming everyone? I've read a few of the reviews below and my experience is the very same. They are charging super cover when you do not want it. I refused extra insurance at the desk upon rental and when i got home saw a charge on my card for double the cost of my rental. I have been chasing this for months now and Hertz Beauvais are refusing to return my money. I am not letting this go if anyone else would like to join me in bringing a case against them, please reach out as there is power in numbers and they should not be let get away with scamming us.

Hertz Nice Airport - SCAM INSURANCE

I have rented at this office multiple times through KLM/Hertz. Our last experience can only be described as a scam. Our inbound flight was delayed but the office was waiting for me. Good service! Most other rental companies at the rental center had already left and most lights in the rental center were out.

The Hertz employee who also wanted to go home (I understand that at that late hour) had my key ready when I approached the counter. He gave me the key, I signed what he handed me and went to fetch the car.

Upon our return I got the receipt and there suddenly was an extra 637 euro charge for insurance. That wasn't right because the entire rental cost was 436 euro and already included full insurance. I asked the employee if it was a mistake? She said not worry about it and it would be adjusted automatically. It didn’t feel good and I immediately contacted Hertz. They didn’t respond quickly so I kept pushing by email and phone. I tried to call the Nice office multiple time but the number on the papers and online doesn’t work. I emailed multiple times and finally got an answer stating it was insurance that automatically was added to my credit card due to me being a gold member??? This is a flat out lie. I’m a gold member but my previous rentals with KLM/Hertz under the exact same terms didn’t have the sudden ‘extra insurance’ on top of the already paid rental, that also already included full insurance! And an extra insurance that is 637 euro’s extra for a complete 436 euro rental that already included insurance. That is a scam and a fraud.

I have asked Hertz multiple times to explain this to me and how it it’s possible that my previous rental didn’t get the extra insurance, that they claim is automatically added on top of the rental due to my status.

They haven’t respond, and I have been waiting for weeks for an explanation. I understand why they don’t reply. They can’t explain this because they know it’s a dirty trick.

Hertz fraudulent mis-selling in France

I wanted to leave this review as a warning for Hertz, and the bordeaux branch in particular. I prepaid for a months' car hire, and selected the standard level of insurance cover. About a week after returning the car I was called by a Hertz employee asking me for my credit card details to process a refund and close the account. I said that this was strange as everything was settled and at the car drop off I was told all was in order - I asked Hertz to send me details of the account status, and nothing followed. Hertz then attempted 15 times to take money from my account in varying amounts without my authorisation.

I was subsequently told that I had elected for "super-cover" which I had not, and I sent them the booking details to confirm. Hertz have passed this onto a debt collection agency and refused to even respond to 20+ emails asking for the simple courtesy of a conversation about our disagreement - despite promising to respond each time contact is made. I have escalated to an arbitration agency in France to hopefully bring the company to a least be brave enough to admit they made a mistake.

Beware of Heartz overcharging your credit card.

We had a car breakdown in France. Our insurance company used Hertz to hire cars on our behalf. We had no choice in the matter.
Hertz have a few "tricks" to watch out for if using your break down insurance company. The first, is they have a limit as to how much you can spend on hire cars, should you breakdown, in our case £1500.
The second trick they played on us was insisting we had an Electric car! It did not matter if you were unfamiliar with an electric car or not, they wouldn't offer us anything else at Bordeaux airport. Electric cars are very expensive to hire and will use up quite a bit of your insurance car hire allowance.

So, an electric car we had to have at their insistence. We found out later that the hire company had got us to sign a document for the car that included personal accident insurance, and even though RAC Europe Opteven were paying for the hire, Hertz took over 500 Euros from my credit card.
I did not understand what I was signing for, nor did I understand that they would deduct anything from my credit card.
I drove 150km to my b and b in SW France and somehow managed to pick up a screw to the front tyre.
I did not notice until the next day. I called Hertz Bordeaux to explain what happened, they gave
us the Hertz assist breakdown service, who told me on the phone that a puncture should cost between 30 to 50euros to fix and that they would send a breakdown truck within an hour. This was 11 am. The breakdown turned up at 4:30pm and refused to fix it on site. The Hertz assist guy decided he was going to take the car away, even after admitting he could have fixed it on sit, but wouldn't. Without any explanation he loaded the car on to his breakdown truck and left. On examination of my credit card account some time later, we noticed that Hertz had removed 538 euros from our account on the very same day we picked up the car at Bordeaux Airport. We were astounded!
How did they know the car was going to pick up a screw!!
We had not been informed that our card would be charged anything as a deposit, as it was our breakdown insurance company that we were assured would be footing the bill, not us. The document of course was in French was not translated or explained, even though the guys at Bordeaux Hertz pick up depot spoke excellent English.
On the 12th of December we noticed that Hertz had emailed with an invoice which said it was not a bill. On this invoice they had taken 538 euros and it was made up of a charge to fix the puncture, a charge to recharge the car with an electric, a charge to arrange the car be taken to a charging point and an insurance premium which was never asked for of 119 euros for personal accident. The puncture which should have cost 50 euros max. Was ten times that. It was removed from my card on the day of the rental. A lesson learned.
Just don't use this company who will rip you off at every turn. Make sure you translate everything you sign, take photos of the document and the car, and use a translation app to see what you are signing.
Do not use Hertz.. or tell your insurance company this story - find a more honest supplier.
We complained to Hertz about this totally outrageous charging, they refunded the insurance premium, nothing else. They did not answer our queries, or reply to our emails.

Poor rental company and service

Poor rental company and service. Our vehicle was not properly maintained upon pick-up. Required us to fill up the AdBlu. On our last evening, car would not start, had to call Hertz roadside assistance, put on hold on phone for 23 minutes. We did return the car 2 hours late the following morning and were charged for additional time. When I asked that this charge be reversed since we were delayed and our trip plans interrupted, I was asked to send copies of our documentation. I did so (one month ago) and have not heard from them since. Do not rent from Hertz at the CDG airport!

WARNING!

WARNING!! DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ! THEY WILL LIE JUST TO STEAL YOUR MONEY! (especially from Orly airport!) I rented my car from Hertz recently!...I signed up for Hertz Gold rewards so I could also walk into the airport and have my car ready...I had to wait 45 minutes before someone waited on me to give me my car when it should have been ready and waiting. Second i paid to rent the car for 2 days. I had to return it by 9h on the morning of October 20th. I returned the car on the evening of October 19th...right after hours at 22h15. I couldn't put my keys in the drop box because the Tesla keys wouldn't fit. An agent was still present and he came out and took my keys. After, the next day, I get charged almost 100 euros saying i returned the car on October 20th at 13h16!! TOTAL LIE! Because we are going back and forth about this issue...and when I finally had to ask for the parking video ...it was too late because the parking video is erased after 10 days . So the moral of the story if you don't want to be RIPPED OFF BY LIERS AND THIEVES...DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ! There are plenty of other rental agencies to choose from right in the same garage...Avis..Europecar...Alamo . Choose wisely...BUT NOT HERTZ!!!

Beware the GREAT HERTZ RIP-OFF

Beware the GREAT HERTZ RIP-OFF! I rented a Polestar from Hertz in Nantes Airport, France. The car was a nice dual motor plus pack spec, but high mileage, dirty, and with extensive unrepaired damage from previous rentals. I immediately spotted significant damage which wasn't listed on the condition report. I returned to the rental desk and asked that the car be re inspected and the damage recorded before I accepted the car. This was refused and I was told to take pictures of the damage and that this would be sufficient to ensure that I would not be charged for existing damage.

I drove the car for a week without issue, enjoying the dual motor plus pack experience on fabulous french roads. I returned it cleaner and in better condition than I received it. When I returned it, I offered to inspect the car with a Hertz employee, and show them the pictures of the damage. Once again this was refused. I checked in for my flight and went throught security at the airport. As I waited to board, I received an email from Hertz with an invoice for 255 euro for pre existing damage to an alloy wheel. I responded immediately with time and location stamped pictures proving that the damage was already on the car when I collected it. I received an automated reply stating that they would respond within 2 weeks. Unhappy with this I registered a complaint with Hertz 2 days later. They responded and asked me for the pictures which I sent by return email. I then received a feeble email saying they couldn't download my time and location stamped pictures. I replied and told them how to download and verify the evidence. They once again replied saying they couldn't verify the time and date of the images, despite this information being in the metadata for each image.

Apparently this is a popular car rental scam, one that HERTZ is especially fond of. They bill multiple customers for the same damage, driving up their profits for each rental. Thankfully my credit card company is happy to accept my evidence and cancel the charge to my credit card. I have also reported HERTZ to the French consumer authorities who take a very dim.view of this type of rental fraud.

Misleading information on fuel tank being full

I hired a car (Volvo XC60) from Hertz Bordeaux airport on 29/09/23 for the day. Everything went fine, until I discovered when filling up before handing back the car that the full tank meant a driving distance of over 1,000 km, whereas when I picked the car, it showed just over 750 km. Not knowing this model well, this did not alert me at the time (the fuel gauge isn't the old fashioned analogue needle, but it just shows the driving range). In effect, I filled up for me and the previous person who hired the car.
When I mentioned this to Hertz, they made some vague promise that they'd 'mention it to the manager', and that I should report it when receiving the request for feedback from Hertz.
I did so and nothing has happened.

Second time I've used Hertz at Bordeaux Airport

Second time I've used Hertz at Bordeaux airport with no problems. English-speaking staff member came out to make sure satnav was in English, which was appreciated. I bought their SuperCover insurance and returning the car was as simple as handing over the keys (the only check that was made was to make sure I'd topped up fuel). I recommend getting their own insurance (although pricy) as I have been scammed at Bordeaux (by another rental company) in the past; that time I had 3rd party car rental insurance. Overall, a very good experience and as long as nothing changes will be using Hertz for future trips to Bordeaux.

iLeft high and dry without money

I rented from Beavaus Airport in France. I had I paid for 2 days and full insurance several days before. Upon collecting the vehicle, instead of a Peugeot 308, I was given a new Jeep Cheokee. I was informed that I would have to pay another 75€ to reduce the 'excess' in case of damage, from 1,800€ to 800€. He asked for a card so as to check that the card was active (his words) and it would be a small temporary deduction from my account. They took 800€ from a debit account, not a credit card! I only noticed this when I arrived at my hotel 2 hours later. I managed to call the office in Spain, as I'd now no money to pay for the hotel and fuel to return the car. I was threatened that if I couldn't purchase fuel to return the car, then it 'will become much, much worse for you". I was also told that the money would be returned to my account around 4-7days after I returned the car. When discovered I'd paid with a debit card instead of credit, then it could take up to 20 days! None of this was told to me at rental. I eventually had enough from borrowing money to pay for fuel, the Hotel is trusting me to pay within a month. So with a full tank I returned it. I complained again to a staff member, but just received shrugged shoulders. Then I received a further charge of 68€ for something I can't understand what for, I can't ask what it is but its being taken from the money they have of mmine. I am now without any money at all, I can't return home until my pension comes in two weeks, I have bills coming from the debit account. They refuse to help even though they have the car returned EXACTLY as when I took it. They kept referring back to the small print to justify their actions. I have never rented a car outside of Greece before, I've never driven a hybrid car (that wasn't what I'd originally requested) The charges and added insurance, and huge excesses, are alien to me. Hertz Car Rental are without doubt, without any compassion or empathy to a situation where one of their customers was in a difficult situation, and completely without money. Apparently, according to Hertz, these charges are normal. Not true! I spoke with a friend, who rented from NewWay Car rental. They have no extra or hidden charges, no huge deposits, only the cost of a full tank of fuel should it be returned empty. Hertz ate holding MY 800€ for 20 days for no reason. If this is happening world wide, then how much money are they making from holding our money. I find the company to be very close to behaving in a criminal manner, and to just keep referring to 'read the small print" does not make it okay to what they are doing. Never again. Awful company.

Very misleading insurance and very 80% higher cost to return early

When picking up the vehicle the manager kept interrupting the rental agent helping us saying there is high theft, vandalism, etc. My wife speaks French (born and raised in france) and was quoted 180 euro for insurance with them saying would need to directly pay the cost of the car if anything happened. I have primary coverage with my credit card but relented based on the managers persistence. We took the insurance they quoted but then at the end said it was only for collision and theft and vandilism was no covered. After searching the internet and seeing my primary would no longer provide coverage they said it was too late to remove it. It was a one way rental from Marseille to Lyon for 11 days. On the 4th day I began to worry about not having vandalism and theft coverage so tried to return it after 4 days. Guess what? Rather than the 1050 euro they wanted 1800 euro to take it back early. Just so crazy to want 800 euro above the original rental cost to return it early. Unlike Avis I also found Hertz France charges 10 Euro a day for your spouse to be added. Avis is free. We have rented with Avis in France every year for 20 years... we only took Hertz because we gained presidents club status with a credit card and it was slight cheaper than Avis. Well, at least before they added 10 euro a day for my wife to be added. The manager seemed very dishonest about the insurance and even told us to just say we lost the contract (showing Hertz collision coverage) if we did need to use our credit card coverage. Dishonest?? Feels like it speaks to the dishonesty of Hertz France.

I recently hired a car at Hyeres/Toulon…

I recently hired a car at Hyeres/Toulon airport. I returned the car with a full tank of petrol. A day later Hertz invoiced me for petrol at a cost of €155.
I made a complaint through their customer relations and sent them a copy of my bank statement showing a charge for fuel prior to dropping the car off.
Today I received a reply saying that they had investigated thoroughly and that I had returned the car empty.
Thieves and liars. I now have the aggravation of challenging this with my credit card company when it appears on my statement.
The sad thing is, l left them an excellent review before their invoice arrived.

Hertz FR SCAM people!!

UPDATE: After just over a month of continuous emailing, reviewing & social media posts, Hertz France finally acknowledged that the damage already existed before I hired and that my photos I took on arrival proved this. The money has been returned to me in full. I don't know if this is purely down to it finally falling into the right customer services person's hands but I cannot stress enough:
- ALWAYS take your own high res photos and videos of car on arrival
- try and get them to acknowledge all is fine with the car upon collection on paper (if it actually is) and get them to sign something saying this instead of just verbally.
- if they try and screw you when you've returned home (and they will because they're crooks!) Just fight fight fight with your proof and don't give up. Email every contact email you can find, post on social media if you can and don't give up, it will even come back if you are in the right.
Hertz FR scam people. I thought this was just a branch issue with Bordeaux airport where we hired our car from, but I can see from here that it is a wide issue across Hertz France. What Hertz are doing to customers that choose to use their service is beyond awful.
I hired a car for a week earlier this month, we had no issues with it and it was a great car. On return, we filled the petrol like for like and had a Hertz employee check the car interior & exterior before handing over the keys. They confirmed all was okay and we were fine to go. We signed acknowledging this. I had taken photos on collection of existing scratches to the car's exterior, this was the only visible damage I could see. She didn't mention these and they are on the report they gave when I picked up the car.
On returning to the UK, a week later I receive an invoice for €896 for damages. There is no report alongside this in the email, no explanation or information let alone proof with photos of the supposed damage. I have contacted multiple email addresses and so far just received 'we will look into this' responses. Since then, the €896 euros has been taken from my credit card. This is truly shocking that a large company can literally steal money from their customers with no reason provided, they are getting away with this in some cases and people need to shout about it. I am telling absolutely everyone to NOT ever hire a car from Hertz france or any other hire company they own (we hired via Dollar).

I am disputing with my credit card provider and if this doesn't work I will be claiming through insurance, I will not lose this money as I will not give up fighting but I am desperately warning people do not book with them or get fooled by the odd positive review. If you have already booked. Take photos on arrival of everything and when you return as well, also ask for a copy / written confirmation that they have acknowledged everything is perfect. Crooks!!!!
