Hertz France - Excess Charges - Again !!!
How can Hertz keep up such a poor score in this age of online reviews when everyone can see what a poor service they offer. I booked two cars from Hertz (Thrifty) Beziers Airport. Just like so many other people who have written reviews I was charged (£346) almost the same amount as the original booking fee (£392) after returning the cars in exactly the same condition as collected and with a full tank of fuel. The big "after return" charge was on the car we had taken out Hertz full comprehensive insurance at an additional €59.98 so the charge could not have been for any damage. So, why is Hertz management in France so bad. As a Hertz Gold member I have had years of first class service renting cars all over the USA. But Hertz France is just plain BAD.
Update:- Well - Hertz have quickly replied to my query. How efficient ! However, you won't believe this - the additional charge was for "damage" - on a car that had "Hertz Super Cover" - Yest that's the super cover that cost an extra €59.98 just to make sure that is any damage occurred during the rental the liability would be reduced to "Zero".
Update 2. Well another "Victor Meldrew" moment and no you "won't believe it" either. Quick as a flash Hertz confirmed the damage was due to "negligence" and therefore wasn't covered by their not-so "Super Cover". I have asked them what the damage was and why it was negligence but they can't seem to tell me.
Update 3. After a number of emails asking for details of the damage and how they decided it was "negligence", plus a draw out "text chat" I received an email saying after investigation a full refund would be on its way. No explanation of what had gone wrong, why we had been charged in the first place or why someone somewhere had decided we had been negligent, just sorry here's a refund. OK, a good result, but in conclusion. Be careful, either get a Hertz employee to confirm the car is 100% OK when you return it, or take loads of photos. Then if you get an additional charge, don't back down. Demand details, photos and proof of what the damage is and why its down to you.

Bad experience - Hertz Ajaccio airport (Corsica)
We had a very bad experience renting from Hertz at the Ajaccio airport in Corsica. We reserved an economy gasoline-powered car, but when we got there, they didn't have any. They gave us a hard sell for an electric car or the option of renting a bigger gasoline-powered car (more expensive with more expensive insurance).
The hard sell for the electric car was misleading. "It will only take 15 minutes to recharge," said the woman at Hertz (Wrong, it takes hours.) "Buy this E-motum fueling card for 45 Euros--there are plenty of recharging stations," she said. (Wrong, the card didn't work and the recharging stations are sparse.)
We tried to get a refund for the E-motum card when we returned the car but got the runaround. I've tried to contact Hertz since then and can't reach a live person or get a response.
From Google reviews I've read about Hertz in Corsica, many people have the same bad experience we did. It's like being the victim of a scam.

Hertz - La Rochelle (Charge with no communication)
Hertz - La Rochelle
I was told by the staff on 27 Sept that the rental desk would open until 16.00 on 29 Sept, i arrived at 15.09 and there was no one there so i left key in the hertz key drop box.
Now i can see on my bank statement there is a charge for 455.36 euros? what is this for? i left my email address with you when i collected the vehicle and i havent received any documents from you.
I fully refuelled the car to 100% before dropped it off (when i picked up the car and it showned 90% fuel and the lady staff said its a software error which is obviously a lie)
Furthermore, i have a video of the vehicle both inside and outside showing no damage + clean condition when i left in bay 23.
VERY UPSET CUSTOMER

We were hostaged in Peru
Hertz works we franchisees
We have been hostaged in Peru and in Panama, the franchisee made us pay 3 times more than we should have, pretexting there were insurances we needed. We already had them on our credit card. We were at the beginning of the holidays, we had no choice but to accept, or ruin the holidays without a car to move around… NEVER AGAIN
BE VERY CAFEFUL

Unfair car damage charges
Our Hertz rental car was reversed into outside a shop. The car was stationary. The other driver admitted full responsibility. Insurance details were exchanged and Hertz were informed immediately. The damage was barely noticeable. Our credit card was charged with £487. Hertz refused to take any action and the other driver’s insurance company never received a claim from Hertz. The other driver paid us the £487 directly. But for her excellent fairness we would have been unable to recover the excessive charges.

Robbery, arnaque, avoid at all costs
I rented a car for an agreed upon 85 euro, but was charged 110 at the counter when I picked up. The car was significantly smaller than was promised, the car I reserved had 50cm more in length and 40cm more in width for the door, however upon arrive I recieved something much smaller and therefore could not use the vehicle for the intended rental purpose.
Then, the vehicle was provided without a full tank of gas, I had to fill it with 85 euro of gas after only 45km driven. Then I was charged 60 euro for fuel upon return. Then I was additionally changed yet another 65 euro for an unexplained charge. The car was in perfect shape with full fuel, I have pictures of the car, of the fuel gage, and of the reciept of gas purchased nearby.
Hertz is impossible to contact, the number provided is no longer in service or unreachable, they provide no contact with the fees. It is a complete robbery and should be illegal, and I would advice against ever using this company. 85 euro agreed upon price, and now I have paid over 300 euro and they still are making charges to my card 2 weeks later.

Rented a car from Hertz Corsica…
Rented a car from Hertz Corsica 9/14-9/18. Picked up at Ajaccio and returned at Figari. I had reserved an automatic, small SUV with plenty of room for 3 people and luggage. What I received was a Peugot 2008 manual version, which was not the same class. No automatics were available. It took one hour to check in and receive my car due to long lines, even though none of the other rental car companies had lines. I thought about switching and in retrospect wish i had. My car was filthy, and not washed outside. Worst part was brakes were bad and sounded like it was scraping metal. Definitely not safe in Corsica's mountains. To cap it off, upon return in Figari (Filippi is the local company), the agent at their "garage" was incredibly rude. This was not the experience i have usually had with Hertz as a gold customer! Might have to do more with their local agent Filippi.

Late return fee deducted incorrectly. Emails ignored

Please refund me the late return fee that was taken when I clearly did not return the car late.
I've just sent you the fourth email about this. So far all I get are standard pre-cooked email replies.
This is robbery.
Thank you

…unsafe, dishonest and uncommunicative
Hard to believe this from a household name.
This company is unsafe, dishonest and uncommunicative.
Our car was handed over in an unsafe state making it unusable for several days. Repair service very hard to contact, slow to attend and did not complete the job, leaving the vehicle still unsafe.
Hertz made an unauthorised charge to my card (either for the call-out, which was included in the hire charge or for damage which did not exist). It took a month to get this back with no explanation or apology.
We are currently making a claim for the days we could not use the car.
At no point did customer services speak to us by phone.
I am actually shocked how a well known company has turned into a bunch of cowboys.
I advise avoiding altogether.
Now watch below for a meaningless platitude with no offer of a refund.

In Lyon airport
In Lyon airport, there was a problem with the card I held as i had my wife's bank card with me. The guy at the desk took the booking highlighted in the smallest small print a part and then said it was my problem nothing he could do and washed his hands of it. He was rude and generally not caring. The booking so far also has still been charged even though i never had the car.
I went to AVIS 5 stars review from me and they bent over backwards to find a solution. Know where i will go for the future.

ridiculous! $1602 charge for minor scratch
I rent a Volvo suv from Aug 1st to Aug 5th. when return the car to the company, they charged outrageous fee for a minor scratch on door that was on the car, not caused by me. And another very expensive fee for a lower side door scratch. For this one time repair, they are twice $549 for loss of use that doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t the company only need one time repair for the scratch? Why charge twice? It is ridiculous!

Car rental
Car rental - Hertz, Beziers airport
Be aware! Recently returned a car, at 8.30, to Beziers airport before office opened on Sunday morning.
Car was undamaged when we dropped it off.
Within a couple of hours I was contacted by email by Hertz with an explanation of charges for 2 separate incidents which had caused damage to the car. Photos included of a car which had been damaged. Charges are just under £400. It’s not how the car was returned and photos could be of any similar car…but not the one we had. Anyon3 else had a similar experience?

Hertz refused to release my rental car…
Hertz refused to release my rental car in Nice due to a discrepancy with the driver name. We could not change the driver name on the day of collection as they claimed our booking was made through a third party site (Booking.com) so this changes have to be done on the agent website. After a lot of back and forth between Hertz and their agent, there was no resolution but only time wasted. We ended up renting from their competitor and I lost over 400 Euros. To date no refund was issued. Will never use them ever.

WORST COMPANY
WORST COMPANY. Never use it except if you want to miss your flight. When I checked my booking it was written as cancelled the evening before the flight. So I had to book an other car asap. And this morning they sent the car anyway, so I was there with two drivers. They refuse to refund me. I had a women called Shorouk on the phone. Really rude. Worst customer service. TO AVOID. Last time I also booked a car and I paid 100€ I received the worst car ever.

Do not use - they will take advantage of you!
This is a company that takes advantage of its customers, takes their money, and refuses to communicate with them. Our hire car suffered very minor damage which was not our fault, caused by a hailstone storm. When I returned the car, the Hertz representative at Toulouse Airport said a charge would be taken but to contact Customer Service to reclaim, as it was not our fault. He said this would not be a problem. Hertz FR then charged 342 EUR for the two small dents. I have since tried repeatedly to contact Customer Service (in FR and UK), who refuse to respond or discuss this. Do not use this awful company. Our friends' hire companies, by comparison, did not charge for the freak damage, so I would go with them instead! Avoid Hertz at all costs.

Foreign currency transaction scam
Most horrible
Be careful they will want to convert their EUR charge to your home currency at a inflated rate. For example in my case they converted EUR to USD at a rate of 1.12 instead of market rate of 1.04.
What a scam!!!!

Hertz Montpellier - Very bad service
Hertz was warned and confirmed twice that were available to wait for us due to a flight time changed.
On that day we arrived they just forgot us and made us sleep in a Airport Bench one night.
Next day the team was just arrogant shouting and agressive with us.
They end up solving the issue but charged exactly the same amount when we drove one day less and were not available to compensate us anyway with a partial refund or car upgrade. Even threatening that we had to do a new reservation charging us double.
A shame that a team can damage Hertz name. we will not rent back and will always advise everyone for not doing it.

Would 100% use Hertz again, Very good experience!
I recently rented a car from Lyon Airport for the weekend and returned it to the Train station for a small fee extra for relocating the car.
Couldn't be happier with the service, car and return of the security deposit.
The man that we picked the car up from was very friendly and even spoke English when he realised we didn't speak very much French.
The car was a Ford Fiesta in top condition with a detailed damage report that we confirmed when we got to the car (with a full tank of fuel). The car was a delight to drive all weekend with no issues whatsoever. We took the full cover due to the crash we witnessed getting out of the airport to the car rental, just a bit of peace of mind for us at a good price.
Returning the car was confusing but thankfully another car rental company told us where Hertz car park was due to the office being closed. We returned the car, took some photos of all angles due to reading horror stories online.
They confirmed receipt of the car and invoiced me the following morning. Once they had deducted the full cover from the €260 security deposit, they returned the remaining money to my bank card within 2 days! Very fast service and very professional.
Would 100% use Hertz next time I rent a car, no question!

Charged by Hertz at Beziers Airport post rental for 'damage'
Bad experience with a rental at Beziers Airport. Car returned with no handback as staff busy with inbound passengers collecting vehicles, so I handed the key in at their desk. Charged c.€250 after returning home. No correspondence and I had to call Hertz to find out that they charged me for damage to the rear of the car. There was no damage when I handed the car back and they said they would send me a photo which I have not received. It was also frustrating that the conversation was in French which isn't my native language as Hertz being an international company didn't have or offer an English speaking person available to help. Note to Hertz: perhaps take a look at this and also when there is a review in English it might be courteous to the customer to respond in the same language. It just makes you look entrenched and like you don't really care.
Fortunately I booked with a third party and opted for their full protection coverage so I'm currently asking them to investigate and refund me.
edit: full protection coverage has settled my deductible with me which is great. Hertz finally sent me photos of the damage and I wish that I had taken photos before leaving the vehicle (as above, with no handover). The vehicle had been moved from where I left it and I am certain that I did not cause the damage. Sharks. Shameful. Avoid.
edit 2 - thanks for your completely meaningless autoreply 4 months after this review was posted.
