H & R Block managers are the problem.

H & R Block managers are the problem.
HRB managers FAIL to provide the necessary information and authority to their front line customer service reps to solve a problem.
HRB managers FAIL to adequately train their front line customer service reps.
The Facts:
H & R Block FAILED to electronically file a state return.
I called for help.
The pleasant CSR had to constantly put me on HOLD so that she could look up CANNED answers to my questions. She knew little about HRB software.
After FAILING to solve the problem, she passed me to level 2.
HRB mangers FAILED to give her authority to solve my problem.
The pleasant level 2 CSR had to constantly put me on HOLD so that she could look up CANNED answers to my questions.
HRB mangers FAILED to give her authority to solve my problem.
After FAILING to solve the problem, level 2CSR gave me a code and told me that "escalated" to level 3 who she said would call me back in 5 days to solve my problem.
Level 3 NEVER called back.
HRB managers FAILED again. HRB managers created its FAILED system.
HRB managers Never solved the problem.

I'm self-employed for context

I'm self-employed for context. Very easy to do online with a consultant, but my original quoted price was $200 for self-employed.. at the end of it all I was charged $550. Dishonest business/false advertising. I will never support this business again for that reason alone. I have a VERY simple, small business, so it didn't have anything to do with complexity. I will do it myself next year on TurboTax.

Title: Paid Full Price, Got a Broken Product and 5 Hours of Frustration

The product malfunctioned and it took 5 hours with customer service and tech support for them to fix the problem and finally allow me to e-file
I paid full price for H&R Block Online with the expectation that the software would work as advertised. Instead, the e‑file process completely failed and required nearly five hours of technical support to get it to function at all. A paid tax‑filing product should not require hours of troubleshooting just to perform its most basic task.

The experience was frustrating, time‑consuming, and absolutely not what I paid for. The product did not deliver the seamless, reliable service H&R Block promises. I did not receive the value I paid for, and the company’s response so far has not acknowledged the extent of the inconvenience.

The company refuses to provide any sort of compensation.

Very disappointing experience.

Stay away if you want a refund back

It’s funny how the reviews on here are bad, yet the ones on their website are all wonderful… hmmmm? I think they suck as cost me almost $600 to do my taxes, and they were not difficult. Absolutely insane!!!!!

Preparer couldn't handle a Schedule K-1 and sent me to West Haven — day before taxes due

I visited H&R Block at 376 Whalley Ave, New Haven, CT on April 14, 2026 — one day before the federal tax filing deadline.
When I originally booked online on April 13, the system scheduled me with a manager who does not prepare individual tax returns. I discovered this only by calling ahead. I had to reschedule.
When rescheduling, the receptionist told me to upload my documents in advance. She said my file would be created, my documents reviewed, and everything ready before I arrived. I followed those instructions exactly.
I came in for my 3:15 pm appointment and waited until 3:36. When I finally sat down with the preparer, he did not know who I was. There was no file on screen. My uploaded documents had not been reviewed. He began printing them from scratch while I sat there. Everything the receptionist promised had not been done.
I am a small business owner. My return includes a Schedule K-1 — a standard document. The preparer went through my files for the first time while I was sitting with him. His expression changed as he reviewed them. He then told me he did not think he could complete my return and suggested I try a tax office in West Haven. I thanked him and left.
This was April 14. The deadline was April 15. I was a small business owner left without a tax preparer the day before taxes were due, because of promises a staff member made and did not keep.
A college student at a free tax clinic filed my return the prior year without issue. The fact that a paid, professional preparer at a national chain could not or would not handle what a volunteer student managed effortlessly was the most troubling part of this entire experience.
Do not use this location.

I chose to go to H&R Block this year…

I chose to go to H&R Block this year because they advertised a decent price to do my taxes. The visit lasted 1.5 hrs. When the preparer was done I questioned that I thought the refund would be a little more because of the Big Beautiful Bill giving seniors a new tax credit. I was told that was the best refund. I was charged $600 for 1.5 hrs of work with it mostly just putting the numbers I did all the work gathering into the forms. The next morning I decided to look at my return before putting it away for good, probably never to look at again. Almost immediately I found a $1100 mistake that was missed. It was an additional $1100 I should have gotten. I went to H&R Block and they immediately admitted the mistake and did the amendment. My complaint is when I asked to be refunded my prep fees. Originally I was told no refund. I then contacted customer support and the office in my area called and offered 50% refund. I said that if it had been my mistake they would have charged me more, not excusing my mistake and doing it for free. I had to call customer service 3 different times never being allowed to talk to a actual person only receptionists. Eventually I settled for 50% only because it was obvious they were just going to ignore me until it faded away. This probably happens to 100's of people every year never being caught.

New System Really Stinks

A friend who temps at Block recommended one of the women in her office. I gave Block 2 stars only because the woman was competent and pleasant, but my general experience with Block would have not been one star. For one thing, they chose this year to roll out a new procedure at the office I went to. It's entirely on line. You are expected to summarize your data (income, deductions, etc.), and to scan and upload all relevant documents (like 1099s). Basically, you do their work for them. (No clue if this results in a smaller fee.) If you are the type who likes to bring a box of receipts and documents to a tax preparer and to go over everything, you won't like this new procedure. After everything is uploaded, an "assistant" of some sort looks over everything and you will have a phone conversation with him to see if anything else is still needed. (But NO advice as to accuracy.) (The new system supports a smart phone, so if you have one and know how to use it, you can take pictures of all relevant data and then upload it. If you can't use a smart phone, you can use a PC. If you can't do either, you can take everything to the Block office and one of the minions will scan and upload for you. I have no idea if they charge for that.) I had everything relevant, including the conversation with the "assistant," scanned and uploaded a full month early. And heard nothing until April 14 when, in response to a "where are we?" email, my advisor called to ask me if she could file for an extension because she never completed my return. (And I was due a refund which now I have no idea if I'll ever see.) There is a $99 charge for filing for an extension, which she claimed would be refunded. (We'll see.) So I can't tell you if their charges are reasonable. I can tell you that if you cooperate and give them your data well in advance and they still can't file on time, that ought to be unacceptable for a tax preparer.

What a load of nonsense.

They really like to nickel and dime you for every possible thing that they can. The notion that they make you pay more for each state is stupid. Plus you have to pay to efile even if the state you're filing in has free e-filing. It's actually just them being crooks. Crooks who profit from you. And that profit goes straight toward paying your representative to let them keep swindling you out of cash. It's people who can't afford it that are really being hurt by this predatory company.

Oh yeah, and every two weeks they tell me my refund will come in a few days. Methinks it's time for a lawsuit.

HORRIBLE Experience

I was doing my taxes and when I tried to save my return, it went directly to Tax Pro but I was not completed with my taxes. I called customer service immediately to report it was sent to the Tax Pro before being finished and after 30 minutes on the phone, they said I had to wait for the tax pro to respond. When the tax pro responded, I sent a message to her to send back the return and she did not respond for a week. When she finally responded, she said she could not do that and to call IT. I asked for a number for IT and she said I had to look it up on the website. I finally found the IT number and after a 50 minute phone call, was told they would call back within a few days because they could not retrieve the tax return. I did not hear back and called again on March 6 and after a 30 minute phone call, was told they would call me back in a couple days. After not hearing back, I finally got someone on March 10 who was able to retrieve the return for me (another 20 minute phone call). However, the return was missing almost all the information that was entered. After I was finally able to file the taxes, I then tried calling customer service to ask for a refund for the time spent on the phone with reps who were not able to solve the issue (over 2 hours of my time) and got the runaround about how there were 3 departments and she could not tell me who to contact to get a refund. I then found a Tier 2 number and they were able to pull up my case immediately and after sending my email receipt for the refund (after he told me the incorrect amount that had been paid) and being on the phone with him for almost 30 minutes, he hung up on me. I called back and spent another 20 minutes on the phone only to be told they could not refund my payment.

When I tried to do the satisfaction survey to rate them a “1”, it said they could not accept my submission because it was over 30 days!

No telling us fees upfront

First person said I was getting housing assistance and I tried to explain it was tipps I was paying. Like the last 3 to 7 years. So I had to come back then there system was not working so I had to wait almost 2 hours for the direct deposit that they charged me for.
Plus it took another 30 min until I just left because the money had not even went to my bank yet. For my wife we just said the hell with it and got a card as we needed to leave.
No fees where told to us when we started or got offered options.
Im just hoping I get my money but im done with them for good.

I am so very angry at H & R Block

I am so very angry at H & R Block. DO NOT GO THERE. I had my taxes done and ended up getting money back from the state but owing federal (of course lol). Everything was fine-my H & R Block tax-preparer said I could SIMPLY log into the IRS.GOV website and pay online with a debit/credit card/bank account. Now, I do not share my bank account info period, but a debit card I have to a separate account that is NOT linked to my main account I can do. I go to the IRS site and cannot get my personal tax bill pulled up. No matter WHICH way I try. I can't create the Gov.ID login that the site demands because it claims my phone does not have the capability for video verification-it most certainly does. So it won't let me go further. When I called H and R Block regarding this, the office I went to apparently wasn't answering their phones and I got sent who knows where by the switchboard. The woman I spoke to WAS SO VERY RUDE. SHE WOULD NOT LISTEN. She kept trying to "explain" to me the "other" way I could do it. I told her it wouldn't work and she just kept repeating herself in the snottiest tone you can imagine. I am SO DONE with H & R Block. Here I sit wanting to pay my taxes and can't...and H & R Block has HORRIBLE customer service and DO NOT LISTEN to what is being said. This woman was so bloody sure of herself. I understand the way she was telling me to do it...but it would not work for me. I believe it has something to do with the name change I had not too long ago-which speaking of that...I still can't utilize my H & R Block account online because ever since my legal name change, their site WILL NOT function properly via my account. It won't show any of my tax records and I can't get it fixed because there is no person option for their online account help. I can't get through the automated menu because no matter what name I use, my old or current one, their system claims there is 'other' information linked to that account that doesn't match. FFS. She was so busy repeating the same crap over and over I couldn't get a word in to tell the woman about the name change perhaps being an issue that was causing my lack of access. Oh but she knew so much better that she wouldn't even let me get anything out...just repeating herself over and over. I WILL NEVER DO TAXES WITH H & R BLOCK AGAIN! It may not be a lot to them, but they can kiss my $300 plus some dollars goodbye and it is my sincere hope that everyone else tells them the same.

I had such a bad experience with H&R…

I had such a bad experience with H&R Block,

1. I paid for deluxe pro ($147)and and for some reason, they had quietly downgraded my account to the free version, which made it impossible for me to view my tax returns, as they were prompting me to pay for it again. I was on calls with teams for four hours. Nobody knew why that was the case, and finally they just had me submit a ticket with a tech team and told me that it might take a while.

2. After filing my taxes, for some reason my refund numbers changed and were completely inaccurate. I had contacted my tax pro, and she had no idea. She had to recheck my taxes, confirm that I was correct at the time of filing, and confirm that what was showing on my dashboard was wrong.

3. I was prompted to pay for a service that claimed to lower my tax bracket, and then prompted to pay for a tax pro (which I did), only for the tax pro to tell me that my tax bracket was wrong and I owed more than I was initially promised.

Stolen Tax Docs

(Bridgeville PA office)The employee stole, yes, stole my original tax documents after a disagreement. Bizarre. I had to call the local police to come and retrieve them for me. Police got them and filed reports. Police officer assured me that I acted correctly. A corporate rep called me, completely unphased by the situation. She doubled down and condoned the theft of the documents and actually denied that any theft occurred (contrary to what multiple police officers have stated). No apology. No responsibility. Apparently this type of behavior is normal business practice for HR Block. What I thought was just an unfortunate incident at a local office is actually condoned at the corporate level. It's mind blowing that I had to get the police involved for something that never should have happened if the employee hadn't decided to act illegally in the first place.

I’m extremely disappointed with H&R…

I’m extremely disappointed with H&R Block. After years of being a loyal customer, I was notified by a state I previously lived in that my taxes from two years ago were filed incorrectly due to errors in H&R Block’s own software. This resulted in a $1,200 penalty that I had to pay out of pocket. When I contacted them to request reimbursement, they shifted the blame onto me and offered no real support. Their customer service was impersonal, dismissive, and showed no concern for the situation. I expected much better from a company I trusted for years.

Unethical "Hostage" Tactics and Hidden…

Unethical "Hostage" Tactics and Hidden Fee Escalation – Avoid This HR block Office!
I have never experienced such unprofessionalism in my 25+ years of filing taxes. This office held my completed tax return until the final days of the deadline without explanation, seemingly to leverage the time pressure to justify higher, unquoted service fees.
Despite providing my documents early, communication was non-existent until the very end. This isn't just poor customer service; it feels like a predatory "sunk cost" trap designed to force clients into paying inflated rates because it’s too late to go elsewhere. As someone managing a complex retirement and investment year, I expected expertise and transparency—instead, I got a "hostage" situation with my financial data.
If you value your time, your sanity, and honest pricing, stay far away from this H&R Block office. I will be filing formal complaints with their corporate headquarters and the Better Business Bureau.
