Unacceptable damage and no follow up

I used Imperial Electrical to relocate a BT socket in my 17th-century cottage. The work was carried out by an electrician who appeared unfamiliar with historic fabric.

Drilling into the wall caused significant vibration in fragile historic masonry. Standard red wall plugs were used in soft original brick and lime mortar, which caused the face of the brick to break away and left a very large cavity behind the socket. The void is substantial - I can put my hand into the wall up to my wrist.

The extent of the damage was concealed by the backplate and only became apparent once I removed it myself. I was advised that I could “just whack some filler over it” and that with old houses and uneven walls it didn’t really matter, which is not appropriate advice for period buildings.

I sent photographs clearly showing the damage caused by the works but received no response. The damage remains outstanding and has also affected the opposite side of the wall in an adjoining room, which now also requires repair.

The external wall also required remedial attention, as the filler initially used remained pliable due to the depth of the cavity, and I had to prepare an appropriate mortar myself.

Other standard electrical works carried out at the property (including an EV charger replacement and additional sockets) were completed without issue.

However, based on this experience, I would not recommend this company for period or historic properties.
