Excellent family run business

I traded in my car and was given a really fair price for it - I then purchased an imported stepwagon from these guys super knowledgable about all the import documents and fitted a CarPlay for me so that the dvd player works as well
The new car is serving us well as a family and they even sent me a handbook in English
They was nothing but polite and courteous and not pushy at all
All the document changing, tax and insurance they helped me with and all the new logbook and the proof that my old car was no longer mine arrived within a week of purchase - I couldn’t be happier and would highly recommend these guys and use them again in the future if I could give more stars I would

Should be investigated

In response to the recent feedback on my previous review by the company.
Since getting our car with all its inherent issues it’s just been an absolute maintenance nightmare.

Fuel had leaked through our DPF as part of the original long list of issues.
When I said that the DPF would need changing they just ignored it so they do not go above and beyond at all.

We are now having the DPF changed along with 4 callipers, 4 discs and new pads all round. These were in a shocking state when we got the car but can only just afford to replace them now ourselves, amazing it got through its MOT!

The callipers were so badly corroded it wouldn’t surprise me if they had dragged this out of the sea!

We are getting the chassis inspected as there are some worrying issues that have arisen there.

Do not buy from these guys, worst car experience of my life and it’s ongoing!!

We feel it's important to respond to these additional claims with the facts.

This vehicle was a 13 year old Honda CRV with over 100,000 miles on the clock. At the customer's request, we put the car through an MOT not once but twice, both at our own cost, and on both occasions the vehicle passed with no issues relating to brakes, calipers or any of the items now being mentioned.

Brake discs, pads, calipers and DPF maintenance are wear and tear items on any high mileage diesel vehicle of this age. The suggestion that fuel had leaked through the DPF is something we investigated and found to be inaccurate.

We went well above and beyond on this vehicle, including fitting a replacement engine at our own expense. Two independent MOT passes speak for themselves.

We also gave them a free of charge 12 month warranty.

We wish the customer well but we do not accept these characterisations of our business.

Please avoid this company

Please avoid this company, we have had endless problems.

My son purchased seat Ibiza cupra 3 months and 1 day ago.

The car has had constant issues since purchasing, a couple of which Joseph Sutton has paid for privately.even on the drive home the engine management light was on and we had to return to the garage!

The most recent issue is today.
The car will not start but due to the car being 1 day out of warranty they won't honour the warranty.
1 Day! When this car has had a constant stream of problems from the day of purchase.

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear you've had difficulties and we take all customer concerns seriously.

We do want to provide some important context for anyone reading this review. When you contacted us, we immediately offered to have the vehicle inspected at a local garage at our expense — an offer that was unfortunately declined as you had already arranged for a family member to attend that day.

The vehicle in question is a 17-year-old car, and the issue appears to have been a flat battery — a common occurrence on any vehicle of that age and not indicative of a mechanical fault with the car itself.

We are proud that during the warranty period we did honour several repairs privately, which we feel demonstrates our commitment to looking after our customers well beyond any obligation.

DO NOT BUY OR SELL A CAR THROUGH THIS…

DO NOT BUY OR SELL A CAR THROUGH THIS COMPANY unless you want to risk ending up in a nightmare. I sold my old car/bought a fiat from this company, nearly a year ago and the pain still rumbles on. When you buy/sell a car through them they assure you that all documentation is sorted at point of sale: this isn’t the case. Having bought my old car from me-which apparently was only worth scrap value of £100- they then did not complete any of the necessary paperwork and in fact sold it on to someone who has since been driving round in it committing a plethora of driving offences. It is to be expected that things will go wrong in life – it’s how the situation is dealt with that shows what a company is really about- this company could not care less. They have continually lied to me- we will call you back and let you know what we’ve done and how we’ve sorted this out they told me on the multiple occasions that I rang- they have NEVER rung me back-not once. We’re doing everything in our power to sort this out they said: as the DVLA have informed me just this week there is no communication/ letter from them stating that they told me the transfer of vehicle had been done at point of sale, I can only assume that this great effort they're supposedly making didn’t extend to putting it in writing and walking the 5 minutes to the post box. They have never apologized nor made any offer to pay the money I’m being chased for as a result of their incompetence. The amount of stress, time and money this company have caused me is huge; at one point I was even told I was being taken to court: still they did nothing. It pales into insignificance in comparison but, in addition, the fiat I bought has cost me over £1000 in repairs and the insurance policy they insisted would be so great to provide me with surety turned out to be not worth the paper it was written on. Avoid them at all costs.

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry your experience wasn't what you hoped for.

We want to be transparent for anyone reading this: a refund was issued. A deduction was made to reflect damage to the vehicle that occurred after it left our forecourt, which we have documentation to support.

We always try to do right by our customers and we're proud that in this case, despite the circumstances, we resolved the situation by providing a refund. We wish you well.

Horrendous company

Horrendous company, avoid a your loss. Owe me £6000 when the car was clearly faulty. I've asked several times for a refund and they keep telling me that it's in hand. Five months later they have the car and my money.

Cheating company AVOID

Cheating company. Purchased a car in July 2024. Car arrived with lots of issues. They had the car for 1 months to repair all the issues and returned with more issues. They mentioned they put a brand new clutch in July and the clutch went off in October. I was driving in motor way and they car stopped, almost went into accident. So dangerous car they are selling. They only caring of money nothing else. I am struggling to give this dangerous car back although I have all the rights, but Both they and finance company are playing cheating game with Scotia inspection company. I am very stressed of this experience and still having the car without not able to return it. I have gone to the police regarding this, I haven't even driven the car for a month and sitting at home without usage, paying finance monthly. I won't leave this matter as this has affect my health. This company is Very very very very cheating and their service is terrible. Police has to investigate this and avoid any other person suffer like me. Don't chest anyone like this , we trust when we buy things not to be cheated. As a company you have to learn this.

We're sorry to read this review and understand how stressful car issues can be. However, we feel it's important to provide the full picture for anyone reading this.

When concerns were raised, the finance company commissioned an independent inspection of the vehicle through Scotia. That inspection concluded that we had acted correctly and that the work carried out met the required standard.

We cooperated fully with that process and stand by the work we did. We always try to do right by our customers and welcomed the independent scrutiny.

AVOID THEM!!

AVOID THEM!!! AND BE AWARE!!
Faulty car, all happened with the 6 month statutory warranty, and they don't assume responsibilities. The warranty that they gave with the car... one of the worse one on the market as apparently they don't cover much, so dont even spend money on warranty or even buying a car from them. Be aware!
This didn't happen to my alone, aftercare service is non-existent...

Thank you for your feedback. We feel some very important context is missing here.

The vehicle was over 15 years old and was driven to Spain where it remained for an extended period. When a sensor issue arose, the customer was unwilling to bring the car back to the UK, which we feel is a reasonable expectation before we could inspect or arrange any repair ourselves.

Importantly, the warranty provided with the vehicle included cover for up to 30 days abroad, and the warranty company did offer assistance to the customer directly.

We therefore find the claim that aftercare is "non-existent" difficult to reconcile with the facts — both we and the warranty provider were willing to help. We always strive to look after our customers and we're sorry this experience left you feeling frustrated.

Although I didn’t end up buying a car…

Although I didn’t end up buying a car from JSMC, which was my fault and not theirs, I couldn’t believe how well I was treated. Joe was really helpful in trying to find a buyer for my trade in and unfortunately one such buyer couldn’t be found.
Joe was a pleasure to deal with, thank you for your time

Lies & Don't Acknowledge Their Legal Obligations In First Six Months of Purchase

I was told during a phone call within the first six months of purchase that if anything went wrong with the vehicle, they would not help. I highlighted my rights but was wrongly told it only covered the first three months, when it is six.

Even though I was sold a complete dog of a car, I paid the deposit by credit card, so although the dealer totally refused to deal with the problems under The Consumer Rights Act, my credit card company did which was just as well, as the repairs run into hundreds of pounds in costs, which included illegally fitted tyres.

The mistake I made, going by past experience where I have had nothing but positive experiences with second hand car dealers, was to trust Joseph Sutton and take them on their word. From my experience they are the stereotypical liars and cover up merchants that give the second hand motor trade such a bad name.

I am sure the dealer will use their right to reply with denials of any of this happening, so If you do purchase a vehicle from them, consider paying for a full check or take an extended warranty, but my advice would be, if you care about your own, your passengers’ and other road users’ safety, is AVOID.

Buy with confidence - Excellent customer service and after sales care

A great car buying experience through and through. Absolutely no sales patter or pressure, just simple, honest customer service and after sales care.

Although I've only just bought this car, my first from this company, I will definitely go back when it's time to start looking for another.

Can wholeheartedly recommend Joseph Sutton Motor Co. Although its not your usual car dealer scenario, being located out in the middle of the Kent countryside, many larger car dealers could learn a lot from this friendly, no hassle company. As my review title says - Buy with confidence.
