Generally, this refurbished Kobo Clara e-reader is an improvement over my previous one (Kobo Nia), which was quite glitchy and on which the power button died after less than two years. However, the battery life is not as long on the Clara as it was on the Nia, and I was expecting from the product description when I bought it that the battery would be even longer-lasting than in a cheaper model. I also notice that the screen colour fluctuates on my Clara - from very yellow to blue-white, and back to yellow. It fluctuates while I'm reading, and sometimes stabilizes for a short time, but it's distracting and I worry that this is an indication that the screen isn't going to last well or cause me eye strain.

Refurbished version works well, but the on/off button is very badly designed. It's located right at the bottom of the e-reader and is inset way too far making it hard to locate (black on black) and difficult to push as it's level with the edge of the Kobo.

I've read three books on my Kobo since I got it in June. Generally I'm happy to have it - being able to increase font size and spacing to make it easier on my eyes has been a huge help. I really like being able to plug into my computer and download more fonts or add books to my library. I am, however, disappointed in the quality of the "refurbished" item. It had a significant scratch on the screen when I received it, about an inch long. It doesn't bother me that much but it was a bit of a red flag. There are also some pretty major issues with the touch screen. Certain areas seem to be completely "worn out" somehow - the bottom, where you tap to search the book or move to a certain page, is basically unusable. I can flip pages but can't really navigate the book otherwise. Overall, I feel that I could get the same quality of device used on ebay for $20. I was expecting a lot better, especially when the cost is so close to that of a brand new basic Kobo eReader.

Barely a month after buying this, it hardly works. Within 2 weeks it started occasionally having issues turning on the screen from sleep and now it is happening every time. I have to spend several minutes trying to turn it on, and sometimes it is impossible until I plug it in (even when the battery is nearly full). I can hardly use it at all. Very disappointing. Don’t buy refurbished, and maybe skip kobo altogether.

The screen kept freezing and required hours of charging to start working again. Then one day it had me accept an update and froze permanently; I can't get it to work again! I only had it for a little over a month and it seems like a nice product other than the fact that mine has been having these issues.

This product is not really able to download all books available at the public library. It can only download the ones that are also available in the Rakuten library. This eliminates many books from being able to be download. We didn’t find this out until shortly after the 30 day warranty period. Disappointed.
