Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the quality of products, encountering issues such as tools breaking down quickly, parts failing, and items not performing as expected. Customers also frequently reported problems with pricing, finding repair costs to be nearly as high as new products, and feeling that some items were overpriced for their quality. Additionally, the warranty process was a major source of frustration, with many feeling that their issues were not covered or that the terms were unclear. Reviewers also consistently criticized customer service for being unhelpful and difficult to deal with. However, some customers also mentioned being satisfied with certain products, describing them as well-built, powerful, and reliable for extended periods. A few other people also felt that some tools were fantastic and had not failed them in their business or personal use.

Can't belive all the bad reviews

I've been using Makita tools for nearly 30 years, but after a recent life changes needed to start doing some major DIY, spent over £2000 on makita 18v lxt. Everything is solid and works great and I live in a particularly hostile spot. Chuffed to bits with every penny paid.

Warranty issues

I have been trying to get a Multi Tool returned for almost a week now. It is only 10 months old and requires a warranty repair. Every day I’m told a return label will be mailed to me; every day nothing comes through.
For a supposedly professional company their after sales is atrocious. Having worked as a a QA manager for a very large Japanese organisation for over 15 years I know categorically that the parent company are not at fault; it is the usual case of poor UK staffing.
Sadly I will not be adding to my Makita range due to this experience.

Bought an impact wrench on jan 5th it…

Bought an impact wrench on jan 5th it had stopped working in under 2 months. Sent it in for repairs under the 3 year warranty with the recipt and was told I had to pay £100 for repairs as its wear and tear. This has happened consistently with my last 3-4 impact wrenches they are lasting for a shorter and shorter time and the cost of repair keeps going up. Nothing seems so be covered under warranty. Poor quality products even worse customer service

Makita tools service & Repair

Reading the existing reviews on Makita, I am confused. I bought a Makita drill, last year, so it was still under manufacturers warranty. As I was having problems releasing the chuck, I sent a repair request via their website on a Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday morning I got a message back to say they would have it collected the following morning (Thursday), which they did. Friday, i got a call from the engineer in Glasgow to clarify the issue, and I got it back with a new chuck 3 days later. It cost me nothing, and the speed of repair was in my opinion very impressive. You don't often get such good service nowerdays.

Never buy a Makita !

Purchased a Makita drill & used it three times before the poorly designed metal chuck shredded (so that I couldn’t touch with my hand to unloosen to get the drill bits out).
I tried to get the chuck off but it was stuck solid to the drill chassis.

I sent it off to Makita Wigan to have this done thinking as I have always bought Makita everything and have had trust in the brand they would look after me as a valued customer…..WRONG !

They sent me an estimate of £75 to remove the chuck & replace it….very nearly the cost of a new drill !!!!! Absolute scam & I wouldn’t recommend Makita anymore & wont be buying the brand again…..Shame on you !

A double rip off: China is going down the pan when…

China is going down the pan when companies like Makita rip of Britain.
Simple repeated attempts at fraud.
I ordered a 5ah Makita battery for my hedge Trimmer from “Makita Overseas Exclusive Store” on AliExpress.
What turned up was
a 3ah battery
with the 5 ah Makita label on it
I opened it up and inside were not 3ah batteries but 2ah batteries.
I sent a complaint to AliExpress with pictures and they rejected my complaint saying it was unsubstantiated!
A classic rip off.
If this is a genuine Makita site then Makita are ruining what was a very good name. if it is not then Makita should shut it down.

Zero customer service - Poor quality products

I purchased a Makita chainsaw from Howe Tools on December 30 2022. Unfortunately the chainsaw has developed a fault and stopped working.
I took the chainsaw to my nearest Makita dealer who advised that the fault is likely to be a faulty electrical component and the cost of replacement and repair ws likely to approximate the cost of a new chainsaw.
They advised me that the standard warranty is 1 year and an extra 2 years if registration occurs within 30 days of purchase. I received no documentation about this extended warranty at the time of purchase so did not undertake this registration process. I regard it as rather unfair that I seem to be penalised when the extended warranty information is buried only in Makita's web-site. I contacted Makita customer service to for help, but they could not be bothered to respond. By selling electric only goods, Makita think they are helping the planet, but this sorely wrong when their products are unreliable and the carbon cost of producing Chinese replacements every few years is significant.

Fast repair service

Makita collected my JR002GZ 40V recip saw on Tuesday and I had it back repaired (under warranty) within 72 hours.

I'm highly impressed with this service. Professionals can rely on this brand.

I purchased a Makita DUH601Z 18v LXT…

I purchased a Makita DUH601Z 18v LXT Brushless Hedge Trimmer Naked in March 2024 for £257 from Powertool Mate. It wasn't highlighted clearly in any of the paperwork that I could extend the warranty to 3 years at the time of purchase, so I didn't do that. It stopped working in August 2025 and Makita has just told me they want £215 to repair it. Incredibly frustrated that if I'd have been made aware of the option to extend the warranty the repair would have been free. Until this I'd been a fan of Makita tools but I'm going to look elsewhere going forward. Same for Powertool Mate :(

Cordless drill. Terrible front bearing and chuck

I bought this drill about 5 years ago. Within a year I noticed the chuck had a wobble due to a worn bearing. This has got worse with use. Also the chuck does not hold drills firmly enough and they frequently slip. It's really bad workmanship. I cannot remove the chuck for replacement and have tried hard to do so.
Makita tools used to be better made.

Very poor product description...

Very poor product description.... I went to B&Q this morning to purchase an electric saw and as I already have a sander by Makita which is very good, I decided to get one of their cordless jig saws for £210. The image on the box showed the saw with the battery attached so I assumed it was included and there was a heavy duty security tag on the box so I couldn't open it to check. When I reached the checkout the staff removed the security tag but I forgot to check the box as I was purchasing numbers items and nowhere on the outside of the box did it state the battery and charger were not included.
To my surprise when I got home there was just the saw in the box which was completely useless so I went back to B&Q a second time to buy a charger. There were none on the shelves as they are kept behind the scenes due to their cost (£70-£90 WTF!) and presumably they are easy to steal so I asked a member of staff for the right battery and off I went home again. Got home to realise the battery was dead and needed a charger so I had to go back to B&Q a 3rd time but of course they didn't have the right charger in stock. As I was keen to get the flooring in the spare bedroom done, the member of B&Q staff who checked the battery details on their online system suggested buying a Makita cordless drill for an extra £20 which comes with a charger and battery included for £110 so I did this but of course when I got home the battery pack is completely different from the cordless jig saw and doesn't fit at all. I've wasted a whole day of my weekend over and back to B&Q due to the crappy product description on the Makita box. Whoever does your marketing folks fire them immediately!! I priced the correct battery charger online and it's another £99 - WTF, what a total rip off. I'll be returning everything tomorrow and buying a competing product that actually takes their customer into consideration when manufacturing and selling their electrical goods.

Makita battery lasted 18 months

Makita battery lasted 18 months. They refused to change it, yet the other battery that came with it is still going strong two and a half years on. It was obviously a faulty battery but this cowboy company refused a replacement. DO NOT BUY MIKITA PRODUCTS THE COMPANY WILL 100% LET YOU DOWN.

I bought a Makita hedge trimmer

I bought a Makita hedge trimmer. Cost £309.00. After 6 weeks and approximately 6 hours use it stopped working. It was sent back to Makita and they sent me a bill for £55 because they said it had some rust on it.
This company are conning their customers. They will learn when their customers dissappear.

Satisfied User

I am aghast at all the negative reviews as my experience of Makita has been positive. I own a drill, a sander and a strimmer and all have worked faultlessly for several years. I'm not a "power user" but they still get a fair bit of regular use. Maybe I've just been lucky but I have no complaints.

Very disappointed

I have long been a fan of Makita Tools that use for my carpentry business reccomending them regularly to colleagues. It says a lot for the quality of their tools that I have never had cause to complain or require any major repairs. Just over a year ago based on my experience of Makita tools I purchased a garden shredder not the cheapest on the market but I assumed it wolud meet their high standards. However after a little over a year of pretty light use it completely failed, unfortunately I had not been made aware of the extended warranty. Despite this I returned it to the Makita service centre expecting that a repair on a relatively new machine would be economic and simple. I was shocked when Makita quoted that a new motor wolud be required at a cost considerably more than the cost of a new machine . I cannot see how this is possible but was assured by Makita that this was the case and they were not prepared to negotiate. There only offer was to buy a new machine and take out the three year warranty. I am not preared to do this as if the new machine is of the same poor quality as the old machine despite the warranty I still would have all the considerable hassle of packaging this fairly bulky machine, In the abscence of any reasonable offer from Makita I think it best to look at an alternative comparable machine.
