Elecampane is a member of the Asteraceae plant family, the same plant family that sunflowers and calendula belong to. Native to southern and eastern Europe, Inula helenium is now naturalized around the world. The plant is reportedly named after Helen of Troy, who carried the flowers with her when Paris abducted her from Sparta. Elecampane grows up to six feet tall with large, pointed leaves, yellow, daisy-like flowers, and aromatic roots. Elecampane root has been used for its healthful properties in traditional European herbalism since the time of ancient Greece.
