A member of the Orobanchaceae family, Rehmannia glutinosa is a rhizomatous plant with tubular, reddish-brown flowers, and coarsely toothed, oblong leaves. This herbaceous perennial is native to China where it likes to grow on mountain slopes and in open woodland areas. The species name glutinosa comes from glutinous, referring to the sweet, sticky nature of the root. Rehmannia root is typically found either raw or steamed. Our liquid extract is made with roots that were steam processed after harvest. Rehmannia root is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) where it has been employed for its healthful properties for thousands of years. Also referred to as sheng di huang, rehmannia root is utilized in TCM as an adaptogen and tonic herb for overall wellbeing. Rehmannia root was also used in TCM for its special affinity for the kidneys and adrenals. Steamed rehmannia is considered energetically warming and balancing to yin.
