Applied in good faith; denied a month later due to retroactive policy changes
I submitted my application on March 8, 2026, and waited nearly a month only to receive a denial on April 6th citing "internal policy changes due to geopolitical circumstances." MPOWER's Canada student loans page was updated on March 31 over three weeks after I applied.
When I followed up in writing asking specifically when the policy change took effect and whether it was in place at the time of my submission, I received a reply that did not answer either question. Instead, I was told all applications are reviewed under "the most recent eligibility criteria" with no acknowledgment of the timeline discrepancy I raised.
As an international student planning graduate studies in the U.S., I relied on MPOWER's stated eligibility criteria when I applied. Being subject to policy changes made after submission without any clear communication or direct answers makes it very difficult to plan financially.
I remain on the waitlist and hope MPOWER revisits this. But prospective applicants should be aware that eligibility criteria can change during the review period without notice.
