The iron ons last the entire school year, or longer. I wouldn’t use anything else.

Excellent on clothes but no good on socks
Great quality - easy to apply, takes minutes. Loads of designs to choice from and bright, clear labels. Stay the same, wash after wash. These are my second set - they are worth the little extra cost vs cheaper versions.

Iron-on labels that look good, but sadly fell off after the first wear
Clear lettering and good adhesion to fabric. Transfer paper needs to be at least wider than an iron in order to keep the fabric protected. Expensive for the amount of labels per pack.

Excellent quality, ironed on easily though we will see how many laundry runs they survive. Though to be honest, seeing the satisfaction on Nan's face that there were pretty personalised labels rather than "thick black pen all over her clothes" is worth the effort. Even the black pens eventually wash out and as someone who prefers light coloured clothes this has given her back a sense of autonomy (small as it sounds).
