Overview Give your metalwork the protection it deserves with Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer, a high-performance, anti-corrosive primer designed for use on iron, steel, aluminium, and even mixed material surfaces like wood/metal combinations. Whether you're painting fire escapes, metal gates, garage doors, or window frames, this industrial-grade primer delivers superior adhesion and long-lasting rust resistance even in harsh coastal environments. Stronger and more reliable than standard DIY primers, it’s the go-to choice for both professionals and serious DIYers who need a durable foundation that holds up under pressure. One primer, multiple surfaces Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer simplifies your prep and strengthens your finish. Promotes adhesion Suitable for most metals High durability primer - ideal in coastal areas Anti corrosive properties Area Interior & Exterior Recommended Use Priming metals and wood Base Solvent-Based Coverage 13m² per litre Drying Time Touch Dry, 2 hours Hard Dry, 12 hours Re-Coat Time 12 hours Recommended Coats 1 Coat Application Method Brush, Roller or Spray Clean Up Remove as much product as possible from the equipment before cleaning following manufacturer's recommendations Preparation Proper surface preparation is essential to ensure maximum adhesion and corrosion resistance when using Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer. Follow these steps for best results: General Preparation (All Surfaces) Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, dust, and other contaminants. Remove all loose or flaking material before applying the primer. Use a degreaser to thoroughly clean oily or greasy surfaces before any mechanical preparation. Bare Steel Surfaces All rust, mill scale, and surface contaminants must be removed. Recommended preparation method: Abrasive blast cleaning to SA 2½ standard for optimal performance. If blast cleaning is not practical: Use mechanical cleaning (e.g. wire brushing, grinding) as a second-best alternative. Note: Hand cleaning alone is not sufficient for proper surface preparation. Welded and Assembled Structures When blast cleaning is performed after assembly, give special attention to edges, corners, bolts, nuts, and weld seams Remove all weld spatter, slag, and residue. If needed, grind welds smooth to eliminate irregularities that could affect primer adhesion. Thorough surface prep ensures Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer delivers its full anti-corrosive potential. Application To ensure a durable and effective protective coating, follow these application guidelines carefully: Mix thoroughly before use to ensure even consistency and pigment distribution. Confirm that the surface has been properly prepared as per surface preparation guidelines. Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are above the dew point to prevent moisture contamination. In confined or poorly ventilated areas, provide adequate ventilation during both application and drying. Apply using a brush, roller, or spray in accordance with good painting practices. Apply an even coat for best coverage and performance. Allow to dry fully before applying a suitable topcoat. Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer is designed to be used under a variety of compatible topcoats, excluding those classified as Rapidry.
