Disappointing experience

Disappointing experience – serious issues shortly after purchase

I purchased a Vauxhall Mokka from Next Step Cars Ltd for £4,550 on 31 August 2026. Unfortunately, the experience has been extremely stressful.

The TPMS warning light was on when I collected the car. I was reassured that it would clear after the tyre was inflated and the system reset, but it remained on despite repeated attempts to resolve the problem and a replacement sensor being fitted.

I also discovered an oil leak within weeks of purchase. I reported it to the seller and followed up, but did not receive a response addressing the issue.

I arranged an independent engineer’s inspection, which identified oil leaking around the engine and transmission, evidence consistent with significant previous engine work, and other defects. The engineer concluded that the vehicle was not roadworthy based on the defects observed and considered the oil loss likely to have been present or developing when I bought it.

This has been a very disappointing and stressful experience. I would advise anyone considering buying a car from this dealer to arrange an independent inspection before purchasing.

My advice to other buyers is to consider paying at least part of the purchase price directly by credit card. This may provide protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if something goes wrong with the purchase and the legal requirements are met. I was glad I had paid part of the cost by credit card, as it gave me a route to raise a claim with my card provider.

I hope others find this experience useful and take steps to protect themselves when buying a used car.
