If I could give a negative star to OxfamAmerica, I would. The bereaved family in whose sister’s memory I made a donation had not received any email acknowledgement from OxfamAmerica after ten days. I inquired but they never got back to me with any apology. When they finally sent my requested condolence note and acknowledgement to the recipient family member, they told her the delay was due to a “computer glitch”. Would they ever have notified her had I not inquired? Who knows. Go to Charity Navigator to see how excessive are OxfamAmerica’s fundraising and administrative
expenses, including their CEO’s annual salary of almost half a million. There are other organizations far more worthy of your contributions.

When you purchase a gift item, such as a couple of goats or an emergency toilet, your donation will be used in general support of Oxfam’s work around the world. While the gift options all represent projects funded by Oxfam, we work with our local partners and beneficiaries to determine what supplies and services are needed most, and your donation will be used accordingly. This is to avoid sending a flock of geese to a family when what they really need is a water purifier.

Disappointed
After automatically donating for years, I decided this year to spend some time researching what Oxfam actually does with the money it collects. That was a frustrating experience. It's almost impossible to find out where the money is being spent, how much, and for what specific purposes. The "annual report" is a joke -- glossy and full of vague, optimistic promises, much like an annual corporate report. Not everyone needs to take a deep dive into the finances, but Oxfam really should do a better job of explaining where all this money goes.

Oxfam does so much good in the world. It helps refugees and disaster victims, and helps people struggling in developing countries. It's ability to get clean water and emergency supplies to difficult areas is wonderful. Oxfam is not afraid to speak truth to power. It is for these reasons that we have been donating to Oxfam for many decades.
