If your looking for somewhere to volunteer, pick Cambodia. Amazing people, amazing place. Some of the kindest people out there, and the best little kiddies.

I had the best 3 weeks in Cambodia with PMGY. Before signing up I spoke to PMGY reps over zoom and they were really helpful. At first I was unsure which location I wanted to visit, but I knew I wanted my volunteering experience to feel really impactful. The reps recommended Cambodia as a location that gets less volunteers and so the project really feels the impact of the volunteers. The signing up process and everything leading up to the trip was so easy with PMGY. They booked my flights and always responded quickly to any questions. The handbook was really helpful too. The airport pick-up was smooth and easy, and Jason taught us a bit more about the project on the drive to the school which was really interesting. The school is in a very remote location, with only one trip to the market per week. I found it very calming and enjoyed walking around the nearby village and quarry some mornings. However, you do need to plan ahead to buy any lunches or food you need for the week on market day. The accommodation is basic, but everything is clean. It’s an authentic living experience with basic cold water showers and outside sink. At the end of my visit we got new pillows which made a massive difference and the AC in the dorm was a lifesaver! We received two meals a day, with breakfast always including lots of and fresh fruit and dinner was rice or pasta. I am vegetarian and that was no issue at all. I had signed up for the teaching project, but during my first two weeks there were more teachers than childcare volunteers so I volunteered to do some childcare and teaching hybrid. I loved both projects so much, teaching the younger kids in childcare and playing lots of games was very fun and it was also great to be challenged with teacher the older ones more complicated tenses and structures. Overall it was the most rewarding experience and I would recommend either project whole heartedly. The team at Hope Agency were amazing. Jason arranged extra activities for us like a waterfall visit and John was always on hand and responded to messages and questions as quickly as possible. Our volunteer co-ordinator Darcy really helped me feel at home and gave the group great recommendations for our weekend trips. Free time was really relaxing, lots of time chatting on the hammocks, reading and lesson planning. I made amazing friends during my time at Hope Agency and have so many great memories. There’s a quiz night every week organised by the volunteers which was really fun. On the weeks we went to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. We had help booking night buses and hostels. We saw the sunset at Angkor Watt which was incredible! Definitely pack some nice ‘going out’ clothes for the weekends! Overall this experience was incredible, the children are so eager to learn and our all lovely souls! If you are worried about booking - just do it! You won’t regret it :)

Amazing experience and school, you get to see the impact around you teaching smiling happy children every day and a real fun friendly atmosphere with the other teachers, who are all really easy going and great to have weekend trips with.

The team in Cambodia is amazing. I enjoyed this experience a lot. Jason made sure that everyone feels at home. And the time with the kids is as incredible.

I really really loved volunteering in Cambodia. Be prepared that you will be living regionally so the facilities are basic but I think this added to the experience. The kids are some of the happiest, most affectionate people I have ever met and it was so rewarding teaching English. The other volunteers were so lovely, I immediately felt comfortable and had lots of fun. The school is such a happy community!!

Hands down the best experience I’ve ever had. Thank you PMGY Cambodia for all that you do, the energy in this school is infectious. I’ve never met children so grateful, appreciative and selfless. I would highly recommend this programme. The kids are so full of joy and it’s extremely humbling to see. As well as making a difference you get to explore the country on the weekends, so you get the best of both worlds. Both John and Jason are extremely helpful in organising transport and offering advice and information for your weekend activities. We got to see waterfalls, temples, monkeys, floating markets, elephants as well as make amazing memories. The other people in the programme are so like minded and I can truly say I’ve made friends for life. It’s such an indescribable feeling being able to give these kids a chance in life with the addition of English to their education. This experience is one I will always hold close to my heart.

PMGY is always available if you have any questions. Of course, it is not possible for them to give a precise example of how the project is going to be as the other volunteers and other outside factors play a role in the experience. However, the handbook was a bit outdated as some information was not correct anymore (as the absence of mattresses at the school, which were available), and the site of PMGY could show some more pictures of the school and give a general idea of how a normal day looks like.
