We recently purchased a car from…

We recently purchased a car from Powerlease Ampthill and were very impressed with Oliver’s service. He was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful throughout the whole process. Communication was clear, and the purchase itself was smooth.

However, we were disappointed at the point of collection. The car’s original, roadworthy tyres had been replaced with brand‑new but cheaper, non‑matching tyres without any prior notice. We were told this was due to them being “not legal”, which did not match our impression when we viewed the car. For a £21,000 vehicle, we expected full transparency and no last‑minute surprises.

Additionally, the car mats that were in the boot during the viewing were missing at collection and were only provided after we asked, with the explanation that they had been washed and not put back.

We are not seeking compensation, but we hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future customers, as the final stage of the process did not match the otherwise excellent service we received from Oliver.

Absolutely superb experience

Absolutely superb experience with Powerlease. Tom was supportive and very patient, regularly checking in to make sure I was fully informed. I’ve purchased my vehicle without actually visiting the forecourt but with great photos, description and with Tom on hand it’s been the best experience I have had with a dealer (and I’m in love with my new car). Thank you to everyone at Powerlease.

EV MOTOR FAILURE - £6,000 REPAIR BILL

I STRONGLY ADVISE AVOIDING POWERLEASE.

Powerlease sold me a £28,000 Audi EV and its electric motor failed less than 3 months later, after just 2,500 miles of careful driving. Their first response was to tell me to bring the car back so they can "determine liability" - not a great start.

I objected, as I live 400 miles away and the car can't be driven. Powerlease didn't offer to pay for the car to be transported, or for a diagnosis from my local Audi garage.

They did remark on the fact that I hadn't purchased their warranty - but as we all know, a warranty doesn't trump your statutory rights. I repeatedly asserted my rights to a repair under the Consumer Rights Act, which is very clear. The Act states that repairs must be undertaken without unreasonable inconvenience or cost to the consumer. Powerlease still failed to provide a remedy.

After I spent months seeking legal advice and obtaining a detailed fault diagnosis - at my own cost - Powerlease eventually sent an "independent" inspector to examine the car. Powerlease's "independent" report - which took them months to send to me - named the fault as "sudden electrical failure". Powerlease claims the "suddenness" absolves them of any responsibility. I obviously strongly disagree, and I believe the law clearly supports my position.

Trading Standards advice explains that defects which cause latent faults (faults which don't appear until some time after purchase) are still legally presumed to have been present at the time of sale. The findings of Powerlease's "independent" inspection does not trump that legal provision.

The Consumer Rights Act also requires goods to be "of satisfactory quality" and "fit for purpose", and this includes durability. A £28K luxury car - 4 years old and with just 40K miles - which suffers a serious motor fault after less than 3 months would categorically NOT be considered satisfactory, fit for purpose, or durable.

I cannot believe that any reasonable person would ever consider Powerlease's position on this matter to be acceptable. In fact, Trading Standards' advice for merchants states: "You should consider the issue from a consumer’s point of view – would you be happy with the goods if you had bought them?" I would be very interested to hear Powerlease's answer to that question.

Most recently, Powerlease had a legal agency send me a letter in an attempt to discourage further communication on the matter. Is this the behaviour of a company which supports its customers?

I've now been unable to use the car for 8 months and am faced with a £6K repair bill. I have been forced to repeatedly seek legal counsel and pay hundreds of pounds for transport and diagnostic fees out of my own pocket. The situation has caused me significant stress, particularly as I already suffer from severe health conditions.

If you're considering buying a car from Powerlease, I suggest asking them: "If this car develops a major fault less than 3 months from now, will you fix it in accordance with my statutory rights?" I expect most people would assume the answer must be "yes". Why, then, has Powerlease made it clear to me that their answer is "no"?

I have no choice but to pursue legal action through the courts and will also be reporting Powerlease to Trading Standards.

Problem after problem

Sold me an absolute shitter of a car, problem after problems with the battery. It was under warranty with the manufacturer. But it took so many months to get my car into the manufacturer (battery shortage). I finally got it fixed about a year later (it really took the manufacturer that long) then the battery issue occurred again and again. I'm constantly going back and forth with Jaguar about this and that's when they told me, look, this car is unsuitable and you need to speak to the seller and financer.

I contacted power lease about my issues after a while (mainly because I thought if a car is under manufacturer warranty, I should contact them) to which they replied, not their problem from their solicitors.

Avoid these crooks.

This review is highly misleading and leaves out key facts.

The vehicle was purchased around three years ago and driven for nearly 20,000 miles before we were contacted around two years after purchase. During that entire period, no faults or concerns were reported to us.

Despite this, the customer demanded a full refund, which is entirely unreasonable given the length of ownership and mileage covered. The demand also contained many inaccuracies. The matter was therefore reviewed by legal advisers, who responded accordingly.

The issues raised relate to the manufacturer (Jaguar) and it feels like your actual issue lays with them more than us. These are wear-and-tear matters commonly associated with this make and model of this age and mileage. The vehicle was sold in good working condition with no faults at the time of sale.

We categorically reject the allegations made. Responsibility cannot be retrospectively shifted years after purchase and extensive use.

Sold me a complete lemon (buy at your own risk)

Edit since below response:
Very easy to claim that my review is untrue but for anyone reading this review, simply do a MOT check on gov website for SK20ZSW and you will see the mileage and dates between MOTs. Don’t trust the dodgy MOTs this company does or the “visual checks”, the car had literally just covered the miles back to London and I got it checked at Halfords MOT. They did not just “repair shocks under warranty after reporting a knock”. I called them from the MOT center after collecting the car and telling them the car failed and immediately they denied everything until I threatened with legal action and that led to escalation to their manager.

My advice to anyone reading this, do your own MOT after collecting car and if it fails, like it did for mine, reject the car immediately, do not risk it. Like I said, I got the car checked at Tesla and the technicians confirmed that no suspension parts had been changed as claimed by PowerLease, all lies.

Original review: Here's my honest review after purchasing a tesla model 3 from them. The bad service started from the start and in hindsight, all the signs were there not to purchase from them. Car was filthy when I arrived even though it was a pre-arrange appointment. Salesman made lots of promises of things he will fix (Another red flag). Repair took longer than expected with times when salesman just didn't respond. After I finally collected the car, took it straight for an MOT, it failed, badly. I called them straight away and they tried to put the blame on me when clearly the car had only been driven the distance to my house. Once escalated to manager after threats of legal action, the manager personally called me and said he will fix every issue and provide a brand new MOT, again, I should have just returned the car. Within the first year of driving, covering less than 10k miles, the car had issues after issues, here are just a few: Drive unit failed completely, screen reboot issue, Battery complete failure requiring a new one, suspension. I have lost count the number of times I have taken this car to Tesla. Oh and there are paint marks in between most panels, so I assume this is a crash repair car.

We are sorry to be reading your review and we are sorry to hear you have had these issues.

You purchased a 4 year old at the time Tesla Model 3 with 81,000 miles from us back in July 2024. In August 2024, we replaced a shock absorber under warranty after you reported a knock, several weeks after collection. The vehicle was fully inspected prior to collection and there was no leak from the shock absorber, this developed after sale and can easily happen. Your claim that you took it straight for an MOT after originally collecting it is just not true. You heard a noise after a few weeks use and instead of reaching out to us, you decided to put the car in for an MOT (which was strange) and the leaking shock absorber was identified. It was only then you contacted us and we assisted. You also reported a few other minor items you were not happy with on your 81,000 mile car - all wear and tear related. We helped address these all for you free of charge.

After this work was completed, at the end of August 2024, we have not heard anything from you, some 18 months ago. We are unable to comment on anything since then, as have not been made aware of anything but none of these issues mentioned were present when you purchased the vehicle. All vehicles are sold in good faith but we are unable to predict the future, which is why it sensible to have warranty.

Reference your appointment, Tesla Model 3's along with Model Y's are our most popular vehicles. They literally sell within days of being advertised. July is also our busiest month of the year. In an ideal world, we would love to have every car fully prepared prior to an appointment but this is not possible. The car had just arrived into stock and needed to be prepared. You were advised of this, you could have waited to come in and view after the car had been prepared but at the risk that it was likely going to sell beforehand. As the car was still to be prepared, as we do with any customer in this situation, is we advise them of what will be done during preparation, so the customer has full understanding of what to expect on collection. Unsure how this is a red flag.

Reference your claim of the vehicle being a crash repaired, this is just not true. We only sell HPI clear vehicles and all cars go through extensive tests.

Time-wasting and misleading dealership(Money Minded)

I had a very disappointing experience with this dealer and would strongly advise others to be cautious.

Before visiting, I had two separate phone calls with their sales team and discussed a potential £300 reduction on a car priced around £22,000. Based on those conversations, I drove around 2 hours with my family to view the vehicle, expecting a reasonable and professional discussion.

On arrival, the first salesman showed us the car. The issues were immediately obvious:

Battery SOH was below normal for the car’s age and mileage (electric vehicle).

4 visible dents

Multiple paint chips across the bonnet, with paint completely off in places.

Given these objective issues, I reasonably asked about the previously discussed price adjustment. I was then told that a second salesman had to approve it. We were asked to wait nearly an hour for him to arrive.

When the second salesman finally turned up, he flatly refused to reduce the price by even £1, despite:

The car’s condition

The battery health concern

The earlier phone discussions

The long travel and waiting time

There was no apology, no flexibility, and no customer consideration. The entire visit felt like a waste of half a day and a classic bait-and-switch approach — get customers in, then refuse any discussion regardless of the car’s condition.

This dealer clearly prioritizes maximum price over honesty, transparency, and customer experience. If you value your time, money, and basic respect as a customer, I would strongly recommend avoiding this dealership and looking elsewhere.

We have tried reaching out to you but you have not responded to our message or call. I’d like to clarify my experience with our communications earlier yesterday.
Our first contact was your call to make an appointment to view our Tesla Model Y, to which you suggested you can be here within 30 minutes, this suggests you were either already on your way or only 30 mins away from our showroom. You then asked for discount, which I explained we were unable to offer given the cars competitive pricing. You then stated you had already purchased cars from us previously and said you were previously given discount - I explained that this would have been a different vehicle under different circumstances, we then confirmed the appointment and booked you in for 3pm.
Once you had arrived and viewed the vehicle, I had a call from our salesperson who said you were in the office asking for £300 discount and I had agreed this with you - I had not, and you were aware of this.
Our salesperson explained to me that he had instructed you we would address the cosmetic items (which were minor) on the vehicle that were discussed but no discount. He explained to me that you were insistent that I would personally offer you discount and even though I was not in the office, hwoever, you would wait for me to return even though we had already confirmed we cannot offer discount on this car. This was your choice to wait.
When I returned, we had a discussion and re-explained we cannot offer discount on this vehicle, however as discussed we will address the dents and chips. You seemed reasonable and I thought this was a professional and amicable conversation, however you then decided you would leave the car and left.

So to address your points regarding the following:

If you value;

Your time: you were aware we were not offering discount, if you were not willing to consider the car at the advertised price, it would not be recommended to make a viewing.

Honest communication: you were not mislead in anyway, we were honest, and it seems you didn’t like the information you received. We battery check every vehicle we sell, 91% is not low, especially for a vehicle of its age and mileage and is in line with other vehicles of the same make and model of this age and mileage, and regardless we show you the test results no matter the result so you can make your own decision. We told you no discount and you came to see the car anyway. We also said we would address the dents and chips yet your review claims we did not acknowledge this.

Transparent pricing: we do not and have never advertised our prices as negotiable. We only list one price for our cars, I don’t see how that could be any more transparent.

Being treated with basic respect: this one feels personal and we offered nothing but respect. We were not confrontational, we politely told you on more than ten occasions that we are not offering discount yet you persisted then when you appeared to accept the information you left and went to leave several negative reviews for our business.

Finally I’d like to again readdress the question which clearly encouraged you to leave your review in the first place which is the question of discount. We value all our customers especially our existing ones, I have been part of Powerlease for 15 years and I have seen many customers come back over the years which is fantastic. Whilst we would love to offer discount to all our existing customers, we are an independently owned business and times are harder than they have ever been with even smaller margins. If we could have offered £300 discount, we would have done and leaving a negative review because we couldn’t do this I feel is highly unreasonable and hurtful.

Excellent Sales and Importantly After Sales

I recently purchased a car from these guys and had an excellent experience. No hard selling or pressure, just honest opinions. Salesman I dealt with was Ollie who was great to deal with.
I had a problem with the car within a couple of weeks and needed £500 worth of work doing. Tom who is a Director couldn't have been more helpful and sorted everything for me. To me that tells you everything about them as a company. They wanted their product and name to be first class and it is.

A wonderful experience buying my first Tesla

After just visiting powerlease for a nose around, I found myself signing a contract within 24 hours for my model y Tesla.
I'd never considered going fully electric but after hearing what they have to offer and for cost per month, it was a no brainer for me.
Brandon was the sales advisor that I dealt with.
He was professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the brand...it pretty much sold it to me there and then.
There's no pressure for sales because these cars literally sell themselves.
My first experience with powerlease was excellent and I'll be back in 4 years time for my next one.
Thanks guys, I absolutely love it!!! 👍

Impressive stock, highly knowledgeable, helpful staff, and smooth processes

This is the second dime that i buy a car from Powerlease. Both times were absolute smooth and flawless.

I rang up regarding the Tesla that i was interested in and a highly knowledgeable and helpful sales person, Oliver, assisted me. I told him about my part x, he rang me back an hour later with a offer we negotiated a little and and then settled on a price i was very happy with.

He also explained everything about the deal in great detail to me. it was 2 working days from when i rang up until i was driving off in my new car.

I highly recommend Powerlease when looking for any sort of pre owned EV. their knowledge, and struck are extremely impressive. not to mention the pick up / hand over process is smooth and quick.

Initial contact on the phone was great
Deposit payment was easy. Downhill from there really…

On turning up to collect the car alarm bells were ringing when sat in the car. (Seems to be a recurring theme with other customers) There was an overpowering smell of smoke, which as a non smoker was very off putting. When I questioned this, one of the owners Powerlease said he couldn’t smell anything and brushed it off with the offer an air freshener. The inside of the car also had finger marks on the screens and centre console and wasn’t in the condition I’d expect to see their most expensive car on the lot!! Not reaction I was looking for after I’d just handed over £50k for a car!!

There were also issues with the navigation on the car which was brushed off as a minor thing. Again, this was seen as I minor issue, but for me this should have been checked before I left to come and collect the vehicle. I would subsequently have to take the vehicle into my local Audi in 3 weeks time and wait for them to fix it. This was at the expense of my own time which again was brushed off as something of little importance.

After voicing my concerns over the overall experience i had had in the 1hr I’d spent on site, I was refunded my train fare down to collect the car. That being said, I wasn’t offered this, and I had to push for it!

One of the only positive things to come from the whole experience was Tom the sales guy. Tom was great and I genuinely think he did his best to assist as much as he could.

To top it off, after 5 weeks of having the car one of the AC controls has broken and I am unable to turn the temp down properly - not ideal in a heatwave. After consulting Powerlease they said I would have to bring it back to them. This isn’t ideal when you live 3hrs away! Their ‘Bring back to garage warranty’ isn’t really worth the paper it is written on if you live more than 30mins drive away and thus, not fit for purpose. Food for thought I suppose, lesson learnt on my part.

All in all, for something that should have been an exciting, enjoyable experience it really wasn’t unfortunately. In reality it turned into a bit of a damp squib. I have actually had better, experiences buying second hand vans for my own business if I’m being totally honest - sad really. disappointed in the overall experience with Powerlease.

Dear Mr Mehboob. There are many points to address here regarding your false accusations. First of all, we will not tolerate your aggressive and abusive phone calls, where you are swearing and shouting at our members of staff. Lets be clear, we have not sold you a faulty car. You purchased a vehicle in August 2024 with 16,000 miles. The vehicle has now done in excess of 48,000 miles meaning you have done an additional 32,000 miles in the vehicle. So how can we have sold you a faulty vehicle? Quite simply we have not.
The warranty have advised you as to why the issue you have had is not covered. The warranty you have taken on the vehicle clearly states what is and what isn't covered. We can only apologise your issue is not covered. The warranty can only be cancelled within in the first 30 days. We are now some 11 months on, so it is not possible to now cancel as you are outside of the cancellation period.
I have checked your finance application and you stated you are a director of a company for 20 years and no mention of being a taxi driver. Regardless of that, finance is available for all occupations. The initial issue was that the warranty does not cover taxi use, however, we offer a special Taxi warranty. As we were unaware of the use of the vehicle, you had actually purchased a standard warranty, which you had actually invalidated by then using the vehicle as a taxi. Despite this, as a gesture of goodwill, we spoke with the warranty provider and we got your policy changed to the correct level for taxi when you called us a couple of weeks ago to state it was invalid and you now have a valid warranty. There should of been an additional charge for this as the premium is higher on the taxi warranty but we did not pass this charge on to you, despite us being charged this by the warranty company.

Bought a Nissan Leaf and Ollie from sales did a good job handing over. The only thing I think they should have told me before I made my trip up to see them way that there was no second key (something I always expect to receive). So it cost me £185to get another one made up.
The car started to click after a few days and I had the Nissan garage diagnose it as "stick/slip" on the two drive shafts which is very common on Leafs. The Nissan bill was £490 and Craig from Powerlease offered £200 towards it. I thought this was OK given that no car is perfect - pleased we came to an arrangement that means if I didn't have to take the car back up to Bedford. Overall, these guys are trustworthy and on the whole professional. Don't forget to ask about 2 keys!
