Very poor standards of practice

I am very concerned regarding the standard of practice I’ve experienced at Rase Vets in Scunthorpe. My experiences include the incorrect sexing of my rabbits leading to an accidental litter of 7 kits. This has meant I’ve suffered a significant level of personal cost to look after them until they have been re-homed. I raised a complaint with Rase Vets but there was no record from my appointment consultation that I requested the vet to sex the rabbits nor what she concluded. Therefore, customer service do not believe this error occurred. This is highly worrying, as this means that poor practice will not be addressed both clinically and what is being recorded during consultations. I have sent further evidence to back up my complaint, but I have had no further replies. This complaint is now progressing to formal mediation. Sadly this evening I have had to use Rase Vets for a medical emergency for one of my adult rabbits. The appointment was chaotic, very confusing and emotionally distressing. The vet didn’t diagnose the condition, I had to insist what I thought the problem was. Then I got very conflicting information from the vet, receptionist and veterinary nurse regarding medication and best approaches to care for my sick rabbit. The vet didn’t think the appropriate medication was in stock due to mis-understanding the brand names of the medication. This was only picked up by a veterinary nurse also behind the reception desk who overheard this. The vet then calculated the dosage with an incorrect weight and then made excuses for this, Again it was by chance I overheard the weight that had been originally used and realised this was very wrong. I was stood at the reception desk for 40minutes whilst this fiasco played out leaving me in tears. I have no faith in the medication I’ve been given or whether the dosage is correct. I’ve had to ring up for clarification only to find out that only fluids were given during the consultation when I was told injections were being given to directly treat the GI statis condition. The nurse said she couldn’t confirm what treatment had actually been given as she didn’t know if the vet hadn’t finished off the notes from my consultation. To finish me off I was quoted £57 by the vet during the consultation but after the 40 mins of chaos sorting out medication, my bill ended up at £118. I will never use this practice again after my recent experiences and do not feel that the vets have adequate knowledge and experience, nor can they make accurate records of appointments. Most dangerously, when you raise a complaint, due to poor record keeping by the vets, customer service don’t believe your complaint so poor standards of practice are not addressed nor are lessons learnt from poor clinical practice. I will be progressing my complaints further, including to mediation and higher if required as all animals and their owners deserve far better standards of care than this. I have been very fortunate to find another vet in the local area whose practice has further hi-lighted to me just how worrying the standard of practice is at Rase Vets.

1 Star – Extremely disappointing care and service

I rarely leave reviews, but after my experience with this veterinary practice, I feel compelled to warn others.

Following my dog Benson’s castration, I was extremely distressed by the condition he was sent home in. His surgical area appeared poorly managed, and he was not provided with a properly fitting post-operative suit. Instead, he was given a collar that was far too large, which caused him clear discomfort and distress.

At his three-day post-op check, my concerns only grew. The vet did not properly examine the wound — they didn’t even remove his suit and assessed it from a distance, saying they “couldn’t see very well, but it looks okay.” Even when I offered to help hold him for a proper examination, this was declined. I was then questioned about not cleaning the wound, despite having been explicitly told not to due to dissolvable stitches. The advice given was inconsistent and later changed, which is very concerning from a clinical standpoint.

I have also been repeatedly concerned about hygiene standards at the practice. On multiple visits, there has been visible dirt and animal hair on the floors, and on two occasions I saw blood left on the floor. This raises serious concerns about infection control.

More recently, I booked a pet plan health check and mentioned beforehand that Benson had been scratching his ears. I was told this would be included. However, after the appointment, I was informed it was actually a chargeable consultation. During the exam, the vet couldn’t properly check his ears due to not having the correct equipment, yet still suggested there could be an infection or even eardrum damage. I was given medication and asked to return.

When I queried whether the follow-up would be covered, I was told it wouldn’t be — despite the fact the initial exam couldn’t be properly completed due to their lack of equipment. Expecting clients to pay again in these circumstances is unacceptable.

Overall, the combination of poor post-operative care, inconsistent and potentially unsafe advice, lack of appropriate equipment, poor communication, and concerning hygiene standards has completely undermined my confidence in this practice.

I have now cancelled my pet plan and moved my dog’s care elsewhere.

I worked for this company previously and had to take legal action regarding unpaid money.
I won my case at the Employment Tribunal, but unfortunately the payment has still not been made and enforcement proceedings have now been started to recover it.
I hope the company improves how it handles its legal obligations in the future.

Sadly I have to write a warning review…

Sadly I have to write a warning review to please warn other animal lovers to not use Rase Vets, I have had a traumatic and difficult time when my cat was ill and do not want anyone else to go through the same thing.
My cat is only 2 years old and is a rescue cat, she became very ill quickly over a weekend and I took her into Rase Vets on the Monday, they ran tests and said she was in kidney failure and very anaemic. They called me at 2am to say I needed to bring my other cat in to give her a blood transfusion- when I got there I couldn’t understand the Spanish vet at all, she spoke very little English but did tell me due to an error in stock taking they didn’t actually have a transfusion blood matching kit.
My son ended up calling all the vets in the area and found one in Louth , drove over at about 3am, bought a kit from James Street Vets and brought it back to do the transfusion . They did nothing to sort it out and we had to organise it ourselves.
Then they had an ‘expert’ read her scan which he said looked okay and didn’t explain her symptoms, my new vets have scanned her and said she has only one kidney and it’s very deformed, and she has a congenital kidney disease.
They left her dehydrated, didn’t measure her fluids even though she was very ill and in kidney failure; became very difficult with me when I tried to get answers about what was going on and tried to ban me from visiting her.
I have no doubt she would have died if I hadn’t kept checking up on her, and I had to Google everything they told me as each vet gave different advice and no-one seemed to know what was going on apart from a couple of very good vets we had on some of the shifts.
The language issue is a real problem, there doesn’t seem to be a good handover between shifts and a few vets told me it is understaffed, unorganised and that in the hospital it can be‘chaos’ and on one night the vet nurse said it was’carnage’ in the hospital area. Not very reassuring to leave your very sick animal in that!
I moved her to Wolds Vets and they have been amazing- a completely different experience and she is very well looked after and doing well now.
Please do not trust your sick animals in this place.

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

We had the nightmare experience of taking a very poorly 14 year old Terrier to the new Newark Road Branch, tonight. with a joint conclusion between us and the Vet, that crossing the rainbow bridge was the only option, both the Vet and the Receptionists were absolutely brilliant, compassionate, caring and extremely supportive.

We were given a recommendation for cremation, which we will use. We can honestly say that for such a painful experience, this new Branch of Rase Vets has given us outstanding care, we both really appreciated everything done for our Pet and us as a couple. Full 100% recommendation. Thank you so much for your help at a very difficult time. Mike and Linda

Don’t use this vet

Don’t take your pets here, terrible. Lack of care, no compassion, lack of communication. Changed back to this vet and wish I had never changed. My boy went from having a tummy up on 27th November and ended up in hospital at Market Rasen, discharged following day and 7 days later he couldn’t walk and 11 days later went over the rainbow bridge 😢 absolutely disgusted with how we have been treated. Our hearts are broken, wish we had seen all the reviews about this place and we would never have gone there

Overcharged me

Overcharged me. I picked up meds and asked if the total charge was right. They said yes so I asked for invoice. When I got home I realised they had provided me wirh a statement which just shows the total. I went back into the surgery and asked again (the same receptionist) to check the price. She looked on the computer and said, yes again, the price was right. So I asked for a copy of my previous invoice with the same meds. The wormer and flea combined treatment appeared to have increased by £50.58 to £61.26! I said that cannot be right, that would be an increase of 21%! At that point was then she said yes, they had overcharged! I was then told I couldn't have a refund back on my card, because it had to be dealt with through accounts. No apology, just the usual miserable face.

Rubbish Customer Service

I have had to give this review one star because I cannot give it a minus review
I booked our cat in for castration on Monday 17 November, on arrival the receptionist could not find the booking and said our cat did not exist. On pressing the matter I was told we were a NO SHOW for Friday 14th I pointed out that if this were the case why didn’t we get a phone call informing us of this, the answer was we don’t contact you about these things ( they can contact you on time to inform you your cats flea & worming treatment is due each month at extortionate prices.
The receptionist made me feel it was my fault and when I pressed to speak to someone I was told no one would be in, if I had a complaint to contact customer service I had to rebook for the next day Tuesday 18th
The receptionist needs to have some sort of customer service training and learn to look people in the eye and not avoid eye contact
In all my 72 years I have never been treated this off Handedly by anyone
Bad customer service, inflated prices, first question on booking you cat in is,is he insured WHY, what difference does it make, next question how much is he insured for again WHY. I was then asks if for a fee for each would I like blood tests to check liver and kidney function and a Vet to carry out an examination WHY. My cat is only 6 months old
If felt like all the practice was interested in was making money nothing to do with pet care at all
We will be moving vets after this dreadful experience

I’ve recently moved to Lincolnshire and Rase vets have given my two cats the very best of care. They are prompt in answering calls, kind and helpful during visits. They go above and beyond and I truest them completely when advising me and with the medication they administer. Gemma and Chloe and everyone at Rase Vets in Nettleham are wonderful. So thanks very much Rase Vets!

Shocking vets AVOID

Shocking vets AVOID! My dog was bit by another dog whilst in the scawthorpe surgery and I was made to claim on my insurance to have her ear repaired and stitched back together in market rasen. No attempt to contact the other dog owner, nor claim on their own liability insurance. Just cough up and pay! Since then they have incorrectly documented my dog had a heart murmur which was a lie! They confirmed afterwards it was incorrect and was noted no heart murmur but couldnt not remove it from her record as the vet "had left". I didnt know this was documented in her record until it was too late as I had already changed insurers due to rising costs. Which I would never do if I thought she had something pre-existing or underlying. This all only came to light when she became unwell after a collapse and My insurance declined my direct claim due to this "pre-existing" condition. The insurance asked for mitigation from the vets which didnt happen even though it was documented she did not have this so called heart murmur afterwards and hasnt been diagnosed with one since. Ive been fighting with this vets for nearly a year now. The treatment has been disgusting, I couldn't afford the thousands required to fix her with specialists so I had to have her put to sleep due to their stupidity, lack of courtesy and communication. My girl died because of them! She was 7 years old!! They dont care. They never have, her death is their fault! Our family is broken because of them

Totally lost trust in them.

Like many others i also have lost trust in this practice and i agree with other reviewers about the unsupervised work that is taking place. In the last 2 months i have spent over £1000 on tests and consultations and I'm having to Google things myself on how to manage my dogs condition as I've not been given any advice at all. I feel I'm constantly having to prompt them to suggest a cause. Last week my dog needed antibiotics for a UTI and i was told they were out of stock and i would need to wait another 2 days for them to be ordered in, this just isnt good enough when an infection is present.
My niece also uses them but very recently her dog went to have a lump removed off her rear leg under local anaesthetic, the vet that did the surgery did something wrong which has resulted in the dog having to have her whole leg amputated. A complaint has been made and is not resolved yet.
I am in the process of moving to another vet, which is further away but i know has better standards.

They nearly killed one cat, and lied about another

I have completely lost trust in Rase Vets Scunthorpe. Earlier this year my cat Maya almost died after being prescribed a medication toxic to cats. She had to be rushed to another vet for emergency treatment. While that complaint is still unresolved, I have now found out that my other cat Lilly was never microchipped, even though I paid for it during her spay on 31/03/2025. I was handed a microchip card and reassured it had been done, but scans and X-rays at another practice confirm she has no microchip at all. Their own records list a false number as if it had been implanted.
To make matters worse, most of the vets at this practice are very young, newly graduated and left without proper mentoring or supervision. They are inexperienced and it shows mistakes keep happening because there is no guidance.
This is beyond negligence! It is dishonest and dangerous. Pets and pet owners deserve honesty and safety, not this level of malpractice.

Very corporate organisation

Very corporate organisation. Our cat wasn't eating and lost loads of weight. Went through a range of blood tests, different medications that were no good as he wasn't eating, overnight stays in Scunthorpe recommended and charged us over £1200 with no diagnosis before a physical exam identified a mass in his stomach possibly cancer. Emphasis seemed to be more on fees than care not open to discussion on why things were being done or potential problems. Really poor in my opinion

Horrendous practice for both the animal and myself

I'm extremely upset with the service I received from this practice, both in terms of the care for my pony and the way I’ve been treated as a client.

My elderly pony was unwell and deteriorating, and I called the practice to discuss whether euthanasia might be the kindest option or if there were other options worth exploring. Unfortunately, the vet who attended barely spoke to me, offered no guidance or compassion, and took bloods without any meaningful discussion. I was left with no understanding of what had been done or what the plan was. As it turns out, some of the blood tests taken were completely unnecessary, and if the vet had spoken to me properly, they could have been avoided — saving both time and a very large bill.

The situation escalated from there. I was told the results would be back by Friday morning, but despite calling the practice multiple times that day, I never received the promised call. I was told three times that someone would ring me “shortly,” and then falsely told they had already tried to contact me — which they hadn’t. I finally received a call the next day (Saturday) to confirm the bloods showed euthanasia was the kindest option.

I arranged the procedure for the following Tuesday, but despite the practice knowing my pony was very nervous and couldn’t be handled in the usual way, they sent a vet who had no prior information. This vet stated the procedure couldn’t go ahead without a headcollar (which wasn’t possible), and that I should have been advised to go down the route of a gun euthanasia. Had this been explained to me earlier, a highly distressing and unnecessary situation could have been avoided.

Worse still, the vet attempted to chase and corner my pony, despite me repeatedly asking her not to. The pony was left frightened in his final moments. Eventually, she allowed me to sedate him — something I had asked to do at the beginning — and I had to organise the gunman myself. Throughout all this, I was trying to do the right thing, yet I felt unheard and dismissed. The vet even admitted before leaving that the visit should never have happened and told me I would not be charged.

And yet, despite all of this, I’ve now received an invoice, including:

A full call-out fee for the euthanasia visit — which didn’t go ahead as planned.
An "emergency" surcharge, even though I made it clear this was not an emergency.
The full cost of blood tests, some of which were unnecessary and could have been avoided with proper communication.
To make things worse, I was told someone from the practice would follow up with me after I raised a complaint. Nobody has contacted me. Instead, they ignored my concerns and just sent me a bill.
I’ve owned horses and animals my whole life and have never made a complaint like this. I’ve always had enormous respect for veterinary professionals. But the handling of this situation — the lack of compassion, poor communication, inappropriate charging, and complete absence of accountability — has been disgraceful.

I would urge others to think carefully before using this practice, especially in sensitive or emergency situations. What should have been a peaceful and respectful goodbye turned into something I now relive with deep distress.

I appreciate all businesses need to…

I appreciate all businesses need to make money but I was astounded today to be charged £12.90 for 30ml of Kaogel! I can buy it on Amazon for £25.99 for 480ml! There are 16 doses of 30ml within 480ml so at £12.90 a time that would make that £25.99 bottle (that you no doubt will buy cheaper anyway) cost £206.40!!! There is no justification in that kind of mark up!! Especially after paying £32 to see a vet! I love my pet dearly & he has so many medical issues that with insurance, prescription charges, drugs & visits to you guys costs me about £300 a month! Please think about your ridiculous charges that really are taking the Michael!! .. and to top it off after realising what you had charged & asking to return it & to be refunded, I was told this can’t be done until Monday as it has to be done by your accounts!
