Wouldnt adopt from them again
We phoned up on the off chance that they had a whippet in their kennels and we were pleased to hear that one had only recently come in and was not yet on there web site. We agreed to fill in the forms on the website and they emailed over some photos of him to us.
On the website it says that you an go and visit the dog prior to rehoming and so we enquired about this whilst we awaited our homecheck. They refused to let us visit but gave no reason for this. It was a 300mile round trip for us but we took getting a new dog very seriously and desperately wanted to meet him and get some more info and so we were extremely disappointed.
We had to wait 3 weeks for a homecheck (Im a home checker myself and so I know it can take some time) - we got the call at 9.30am and were told that if we werent around at 11.30am that day then we would have to wait another 3weeks for a check and would lose out!
We dropped everything and stayed in. Later that day we get a email to say that we had passed the home check and we needed to pick the dog up by the weekend. The home check was on the Thursday.
We unfortunately had plans to look after a friends dog that weekend who was going into hospital. We didn't want to bring a new dog into our home under these circumstances and having waited 3 weeks for check we thought it was a little unfair...we also needed to buy beds/collars etc. We hadn't wanted to get our hopes up and buy things in case we didn't get him. We also new nothing about him other than breed, age and a photo.
We take getting a new dog very seriously and wanted some more info. I tried to phone the rescue but never got a response. I finally resorted to emailing some questions and was asked 'what did I need to no?' - temperament / problems / diet etc etc etc the list goes on doesn't it!
I managed to get some basic details out of them but we were still struggling with the collection deadline, we asked for 7 days but were told 'fine, if you don't want him then someone else will snap him up', this did make us extremely angry - this is a dogs life not to be given away to the first person that shows an interest!
We very nearly gave up at this point and by now the whole experience was totally ruined for us.
We somehow managed to re-arrange our plans and picked up the dog on the Sunday. The lady was polite when we got there but we made it as brief as possible and left with the dog.
After a few days we noticed that he had worms, we contacted the rescue and they suggested given him another worming tablet. A few days after this he became very ill and following a trip to the vets we were told he had a low white blood cell count and was very poorly. Luckily a dose of antibiotics sorted things out but this cost £100,
A few days after this he started to get more and more stomach upsets. £800 vet bill later and a months worth of tests concluded that he had colitis, probably bought on by continued worm infestation (advised by our vets). We tried to contact the rescue many times within this month asking for advice (NOT MONEY OR for them to rehome) as we really were at our wits end and all the tests were coming back as clear. We got completely blanked by the rescue and I have never heard anything back from them.
I love our dog to pieces and luckily we were in a position to be able to afford and look after him, otherwise I dread to think what would have happened to him as the rescue seemed to have washed there hands of him.
Completely ruined our experience of getting a new dog. Would not recommend to anyone Im afraid which is a shame as I really wanted to get involved in helping at the place we got our dog from, which sort of made it even worse.
Whippets in rescue are hard to come by which is why we continued with this rescue, otherwise I would have given up long ago.
I appreciate they are a tiny rescue and places are limited, but whats the point of rehoming a dog if its unwell or the home isn't suitable as your just adding to the problem when it comes back into rescue.
