They add on £4 per transaction when paying in instalments using a card. Something which they cannot legally do as it is prohibited by consumer rights regulations.

James, as you are aware there are NO transaction fees if you pay in full.

We offer a service where a client can pay in installments to make it easier for them to spread the cost if they wish.

If a client wishes to do this, there are additional convinience and processing fees associated with that service and there is of course a small charge for that extra service as there would be with ANY services you book. All costs are clear at the point of booking, so you are incorrect.

If you do not wish to book in installments, you do not have to, you do have the option to pay in full without any fees.

Some clients wish to pay in installments and thank us for offering a service like this, so if you do not wish to use this service you do not have to. Please be honest when leaving review as it is not helpful for other people to be mislead.

It’ll serve the purpose, but be prepared for frustrating, poor customer service

I hired a Poppy mascot costume recently and while the end result was a happy child at a great party, the overall experience left a lot to be desired.

Firstly, communication was seriously lacking. After making payment, I received a request for payment again and had to email to confirm I'd already paid. Not a great start. When the costume arrived, it had a strong, unpleasant smell and was visibly damaged.

The company is extremely strict about not missing the return courier collection. I was given a specific date and a one-hour window, so I ensured someone was home all day just to be safe. No one turned up. When I queried this, I received no explanation or apology—just a rescheduled collection date, meaning I had to repeat the process again.

Trying to get my deposit back was equally frustrating. It took four messages before I got a reply, which simply pointed me to their T&Cs. The lack of customer service and basic courtesy is honestly appalling.

I’d suggest reading the reviews before hiring—there’s a reason many are negative. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, hoping my experience would be different, but I now regret it. That said, the mascot costume did serve its purpose, and my son had an amazing birthday—so for that, I’ve given three stars. Just be prepared for poor communication and frustrating service if you choose to go ahead.

Hello, we are glad the mascot was a success at your party and the children enjoyed it! We delivered the correct mascot, on time, and your recived your FULL deposit back within the stated time lines. We are VERY strickt about the return deadline, as you would appreciate if we are not other children will miss out and other customers would be let down - but it is clearly in the terms that the collection date is not negotiable. The courier DPD is seperate from our company and collects the mascot on your behalf, but you need to be available - they provide all the communication about collection not us, so im afraid we have no control over this. The costumes are made of Foam and are cleaned with anti bacterial formula, so this may cause a smell, but as you know the costume are high quality. The terms and conditions clearly explain the delivery info, deposit refund and general time lines very clearly, and they are also clear at the time of booking so the information was made available before you booked. We offer a very cost effective and reliable costume hiring solution that is highly successfull, and a great hit at the party, but it does require clients reading the terms and conditions and makeing sure they understand them before booking. We are glad your event was a success and the mascot was a hit :)

Great fun for my daughter

I read the other reviews before using this service. Given there were reviews about unfair retention of damage deposit I contacted RentAMascot before hiring and they said that the people who leave those reviews are the few unhappy people who caused damage. Prior to hire they were responsive. I told them in advance that I would take a video of the condition of the item on opening it and on returning it, and that I would leave a review at the end. The mascot arrived in time though they had booked a return prior to the hire date I had booked, so I rescheduled the collection for after the hire date as it should have been. They confirmed that was fine. I duly took the video and returned the item in the same condition it arrived, on time, in the original packaging, and using the cable ties they supplied. I can confirm they returned the damage deposit, though it took a few weeks of chasing them by email, phone and text. They appeared to be most responsive to text. The mascot itself was great - really good quality just like you see at public events. My daughter absolutely loved it. Overall it was a lovely experience for my daughter, and that is the main thing.

I booked the Elmo mascot for my daughters 1st birthday. It was easy to book via the website and I received a call a week before to confirm a delivery date. Returning the costume was also easy with a return slip included in the box and all I had to do was drop it to the post office. Will use this company again.

Also to refer to the previous review this company is not a scam if you can’t manage to return the costume the next day as requested that’s your problem not the companies.

Booked JJ (coco melon) and paid in full in the requested time, was concerned when he hadn’t turned up but had one million other things to sort at the same time finally got around to checking the tracking and DPD have delivered it to the wrong house !!!! I’ve knocked every neighbour I have and no one has this mascot and to top it off they are completely uncontactable luckily I managed to rent someone to come in a costume instead however it’s not good enough that you literally cannot get hold of them, I’ve tried to call countless times and emailed! NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE MONEY SPENT !

Transpires this woman actually uses 3 false names. DPD provided visual evidence of her and the parcel being delivered and a Pin GPS (see msg text from them below). This is just a scam to get free goods and her money back. Please see the other reviews she has left for other small companies always claiming delivery issues this is a serial scammer. We have passed her information and her alieses to the authorities and DPD is aware of the situation for future deliveries. Unfortunately, this doesn't help us get our property back and the next little person will not have JJ at their party as this person has retained our mascot.

Below is the email word-for-word confirmation of DPD delivery and confirmation is 100% it was delivered to the correct address from DPD.

''I'm sorry Lauren is disputing the delivery of her parcel. I understand how concerning this is for you.

Team, there were previous non-disputed deliveries made to the same address and the previous delivery matches the disputed delivery name and description. I can confirm this is the same property. The image also has the same floor tiles and the same right-side wall pattern. Our driver delivered this correctly and confirms he delivered to the correct address. (Further photographic evidence and verbal description was supplied here but removed for this persons safety)

Appreciate your concern and patience while we checked the journey of your customer's parcel.

This client kept our mascot for over 2 weeks and incurred 3 missed collection charges directly from DPD as she refused to be available for collections to return the macot. Each non collection DPD fee is £15 each. This Client gave many reasons for this, including one reason of being "asleep" at 11 am on a weekday and that her "door bell wasnt working". Our deposits are only £50 not 80, so no idea why client is making this false claim. £45 was retained by DPD for the charges, £5 was refunded. Rentamascot did not charge ANY further charges! We did not charge for extended hire or missing pieces. But this client ensured 2 clients after her hire missed their hire dates as she refused to take any responsibility for the return of the mascot, however happily posts pictures of the business using Olaf for their fundraiser!! Please see Google reviews for fully authenticated views from some of our 1000's of happy, honest clients who respect the fact that the mascot has a specific hire period and carefully ensure the mascot is collected in time for the next little person. This was not the case here, and it is very disingenuous of this client to claim otherwise.

There are some things we just can't fix - Unfortunately, non-payment is one of them. This client refused to pay the full booking cost and tried to blackmail us with the threat of a bad review unless we reduced his cost of hire on the day the costume was due for dispatch :(

He booked and paid the hire fee and delivery and he chose not to pay his refundable damage deposit in one go, which is fine, we offer installment payments for all clients who need help paying.

The refundable deposit is shown in the quote before payment, and also in the confirmation email sent to the client 1 month before his booking date after his first payment. We sent a link for easy payment for the balance. On the day of dispatch, the client decided he did not want to pay the damage deposit and threatened us with a bad review unless we sent the mascot without payment.

We cannot send a mascot without the damage deposit as this is applied to every order to return the safe return of mascot. We tried to help him and resent his quote and confirmation email and called to explain the situation, by phone, by email, and by text, but the client was uncooperative and decided to cancel his booking.

We have been helping clients with their parties for 15 years, and unfortunately, we need a refundable deposit for every costume, and cannot help resolve an issue when a client refuses to pay a damage deposit on the day of dispatch when it has clearly been shown in the initial quote, and they have agreed to it and confirmed they have read and understood in writing.

Brilliant

Brilliant, amazing, fab. We hired 5 mascots for a joint party for our kids and it was a blast. The costumes were great looking ones, they got delivered 3 days before our party and picked up by the day after by the courier no problems. Got our deposit back no problem. We had a wonderful time, got loads of amazing photos and will be using this company again. Highly recommended if you want a party better any anyone elses Ha ha

1) Really rude owner when asked why my full deposit wasn't returned. Box was packed and picked up the exact day specified, delivery company said they had to go twice (not true, we work from home) and Rentamascot decided to charge for this without even mentioning!! When asked the reason the owner asked if we have any CCTV to prove it (prove our innocence?!), no we do not, why should it be our responsibility when the delivery company could have stated incorrectly. It's not the customers responsibility to bring this up with the courier. Received a vitriolic verbal response. Very unprofessional.

2) Website and paypal links have different prices, they direct you to fill in a form twice which doesn't work.

This client missed their collection, the courier charge a missed collection fee as per contract when they turn up but the client is not in. This is the deduction the client is referring to. The fee is deducted directly by DPD when a client is not In for collection and is only charged when the courier can provide a GPS location that is accurate and a photo of the closed premises. Rentamascot did NOT deduct a penny from the deposit. The deduction was due to the client not being in at the time of collection as agreed. The balance of deposit was refunded in full.

Deposit not returned have them a year

The only issue is I did not receive my deposit back. I gave them a year to pay it back and they said they would but still haven’t. I told them I’ve given you a year if it’s not returned then I’ll write a review. So here I am I would’ve used them twice more last year but went else where. Enjoy that £50 anyways. Only trying have them so long is I wanted to use them again as my kids loved it. Can’t trust her.

We got 2 fancy dress costumes for my daughters birthday, costumes ain’t bad but have seen better qualities with no missing items, when arrange for pick up, Courier company didn’t turn up after wife had a day off to get this arranged, the lady was abrupt via text messaging after trying to get this sorted out and re-picked up, i spoke to lady myself, and no apologies made just talking over me when asking questions, still no response when asking myself or via my wife texting if we will get our deposit back.

Would not recommend or use again.

A simple apology and better communication would of been appreciated as mistakes do happen regarding courier.

BEWARE- Awful company. Do not hire from these people!!!! I ordered a minion for my daughter's 5th birthday. I did not arrive it time. Well actually it never arrived and then the courier came to pick it up and of course it wasn't here. Now 2 weeks later I havent had a refund or the £50 deposit back. So paid £103 for nothing- just an upset 5 year old.
