A very simple, straightforward device which tells you in a minute whether the soil around your plant is dry, damp or wet. You insert the probe in the soil and wait for the result. Very handy, I use it all the time. I've given this as a gift because I think it's so helpful. Can be used on houseplants as well as plant pots outdoors. Probably in the soil in borders too, though I've not tried that yet.

When I unpacked it, I wasn't impressed that the RHS wasted cardboard and carriage by packing it in a box about 10 times too large for the meter. This is a very simple cheap meter that can give good results when soil is reasonably homogenous. It can give very strange readings if there is a layer of clay, going from high moisture to the pointer trying to go backwards below zero moisture as the prong is pushed through the clay. And it's vital to keep the prong shiny, a layer of oxide stops it working. If you need better you will have to pay a great deal more.

End of April bought 2 of these to have in different locations. One has failed completely needle hard over on dry just when I needed it most to check watering of my container grown fruit trees. Not much point asking for replacement they are no longer available. Guess one gets what one pays for. Buy cheap buy twice

Always showed plants as wet when infact the soil was very dry. Lost a few plants because of this.
