Rte 60 Hyundai. Never again.
A few years ago I bought a Hyundai Tucson at Rte 60 Hyundai. During the sales negotiation the sales manager promised to include free routine service for as long as I owned the vehicle. I distinctly remember this because it was a tipping factor in the decision to go with the Hyundai vs the other two vehicles I was looking at.
Last week I took the vehicle in for a 15,000 mile service (we drive very few miles) expecting to have it performed for free as per the original agreement. I was told that my agreement was in fact for a 3 year warranty extended to a 4 year, and that it had timed out. There was no discussion of warranties at the time of the sale - that I do remember. (I suspect the sales manager documented the agreement in this way because most people trade their vehicles within 4 years and he hoped this situation would not arise, therefore.) Of course, as is usual in these places, by the end of the sales process you just want to get out of there as fast as possible and have a shower. Without going through all the paperwork in detail. My mistake to trust.
So I was then quoted $500 plus for an oil change, tire rotation and “inspection”. Oil extra! On top of this I was going to be charged an additional 3% for paying with a credit card. The lady checking me in told me “that is your credit card company charging you, not us”. This of course is not true - the processing fee is charged to the company not the credit card owner. It is a cost of doing business. If a business wants to pass it on, they can choose to do so. Most do not, particularly when they are already charging an exorbitant amount for their service. They must think they are talking to stupid.
I have been round the block a time or two and have never paid that amount of money for an oil change. Given that and their refusal to honor the original agreement I told them I was leaving and would get it done elsewhere and never return to this place again. The lady then asked if I wanted to talk to the sales manager. I asked why and she said he was the son of the owner and might be able to come up with a “solution”. I agree, reluctantly, thinking he might reinstate the original agreement.
But no. Someone who called himself the sales manager then had me sit down for quite a long period while he went off to come up with a “solution”. When he eventually came back, he was not reinstating the original agreement - he was trying to sell me a new vehicle!
Clearly these people do not value or respect their customers.
I went down the road and had my service performed for $99 and change, including oil, and no 3% credit card processing fee. The people there were friendly and open.
