Very tedious process

I am writing just out of annoyance and frustration with the very tedious process. Not targeted to any staff members as they were very lovely and I know they are just bound by protocols.
I’ve been using contact lenses for easily more than 15 years.
Attended for an annual checkup, minor tweaks to the prescription. Paid 40euros for the checkup which seemed fair.
Trial lenses were ordered in, had to go in for a fitting session, and a checkup after I’ve got them in. Another 40euros out. Okay.
Everything was going well, so popped down to order more lenses. No. Have to come back for ANOTHER checkup, that’s another 40 euros. And on top of that, whatever charge that’s going to be with the lenses.
So I’m out 120 euros with no lenses.

Do not go to Specsavers Dawson Street:

Had a really bad experience here starting in January 2025.

A lens in my current pair of glasses got scratched so I went to Specsavers Dawson Street to get them reglazed as well as get a second pair reglazed to have as a backup. The man who did this for me was clearly unaware of the operations of the store as he told me I could pick them up in 10 days which would be a Sunday.

On that Sunday, I called to see if they were in and I was told the lenses “should be in” but their lab doesn’t work on Sundays so they wouldn’t be able to install them.

I then had to wait until I was in town which wasn’t for another 5 days. I received an email before that saying that the lens for my scratched pair had a flaw so they had to be redone but the others were fine. I went in to collect and immediately came back as the prescription in one lens was completely wrong.

I then had to wait another week and a half, where I had sent another email and it wasn’t responded to until I followed up on social media. I was offered a refund at this stage. So I went in to pick them up and they were still wrong (the height was wrong). So they had to be sent back again, I will say the woman I dealt with at this incident was very nice and said she’d be the one dealing with it from there on out and also offered a free pair of sunglasses (I assumed I get them when I picked up my sunglasses).

Cue another week and a half, where one pair came back but the other still had issues. I was sick so I had to wait to come in. I came in and the woman who helped me before was there but she got a different person to assist with me trying them on. This was the final straw. While the glasses were fine, I ended up leaving them and saying I didn’t want them anymore due the treatment I received from this woman. I did not get her name but she was very rude and condescending when I told her that the glasses were crooked (as I saw out of them) because one ear is lower and one eye is higher on the left side of my face. I tried to explain but she kept telling me to “look in the mirror” because they were straight on. When I told her that when I am wearing them I’m not looking in a mirror all day but out of the glasses she said, “So you want me to make them crooked?” I told her my current pair of glasses are not crooked (which you can see when you look at them on my face). At that point I was so upset I told her I don’t want the glasses and that this has been a waste of time. No apology, just “okay”. I sent an email on this explaining how upset I was after everything but no response to that either. No apology or anything.

I don’t want the glasses anymore and this has cemented their complete loss of business. Go to a local optometrist instead.

Avoid at all costs

Avoid at all costs. Unbelievably bad service and company is just using its household name to keep customers returning. Find a local optician.

Specsavers Ballina! One ⭐ only because I can't leave no…

One ⭐ only because I can't leave no stars!!!!
Somehow they have 4.5 ⭐ on Google!
I used Specsavers Ballina Mayo Ireland booking the family in for eye checks and bought their glasses with all their upsales for three.

My wife had cataracts developing and two years later went back for her eye check update. The appointment was booked by Specsavers at a day and time of their choosing (Thursday 12:15 pm)

The Ballina store emailed - texted and phoned to confirm her time/date/attendance.
She arrived 15 minutes before time and checked in with their front desk/reception and took a seat as instructed to wait Infront of the optometrist's office.

40 minutes after her appointment time and still uncalled she went back to reception to be told she had been overlooked "oh! We forgot you."
"Just take a seat for a minute and I'll see if we can fit you in.."

Astonished she politely turned her kind offer down and left!

Absolutely appalling our day completely wasted. She was visible to staff at all times. What in god's name did they think she was doing sitting there in their shop - in their waiting area for almost an hour as they walked past her?

This franchise/ "partnership" is owned by two women who really need to be audited by Specsavers because to triple confirm an appointment causing a day to be wasted plus driving, parking etc..is amateur hour and appalling customer service.

######To Specsavers reply######
Happy to post my X post and my responses to Specsavers "DM us" request here if you'd like?
I'm also happy to publish my wife's email chain with the "Retail Director" of the store in question.

The first thing you will note is that in keeping with your trust pilot reply, and X messages - and emails nowhere in any of them is there anything resembling an apology.

What an appalling customer experience this has been. My wife's experience can't be alone.

I am 5 months waiting for my glasses…

I am 5 months waiting for my glasses from Specksavers in Limerick and I can only get through to a call center and the assistant was very unhelpful and when I sounded annoyed she got more unhelpful and spoke over me, she would not get manager and hung up. When we again phoned Limerick 061312822 I was kept waiting for 8 minutes only for a machine to tell me my call would be noted. This is not a 1 starre view, this is a -5 star

Avoid

I went to Specsavers Mallow to get new glasses and frames for reading and distance wear. The eye exam wasn't exactly great the optician was highly opinionated. But the real issue came when I got my readers, he made the prescription stronger than usual saying that a coating later might work if they didn't suit. I informed the assistant i didn't want any coating and she was fine with that. Skip to a week after getting my reading glasses. I can't use them. Everything is blurred. After being informed by the assistant that if they don't suit i can have them replaced. I returned to the mallow store and was informed that they can indeed fix the problem but it will cost me over 200 euro for this coating. Avoid this particular branch unprofessional and only interested in ripping the customer off adding stuff not needed or wanted. I am now left with having to go to a real optician and pay again for glasses already paid for. Not happy at all.

Portlaoise

I found the staff in Portlaoise good and they were professional.
The premises is completely inadequate. It is way too small and claustrophobic. There is no customer toilet and no drinking water available. Staff are falling ovef each other, never mind customers. I was there for 2 hours with my elderly father and the experience was very unpleasant for him.

Athlone store

I had an appointment in athlone on Saturday 1st of march for an eye test, all the staff were amazing but big should out to Samantha and Cai. Samantha has only been there a week and was so helpful in finding frames that suited me, herself and cai made the experience really enjoyable and we had lots of laughs

Cheap frames

That's it, never again. Their frames are so cheaply made they break so easily. My most recent pair both broke within 3 months of buying them.

Incompetence that you will find hard to surpass!

I ordered three pairs of glasses (reading, intermediate for PC use, and driving) in December 2024. I collected them when due in January.
The intermediate glasses were focussed at laptop distance rather than PC as requested.
I phoned Specsavers and the girl insisted that I needed to return them to the store (no suggestion of an appointment being necessary).
I brought them back to the store and an assistant began the testing rigmarole and I explained that they already had my test measurements and that the problem lay with the glasses.
They insisted that I needed to see the optician and requested that I wait half an hour as she was out to lunch. I declined.
I made an appointment and an optician measured the focal length that I desired and ordered a new set of lenses.
I asked should I phone beforehand and was assured that I would get a call in the event that they were delayed,
I showed up to collect the glasses the day after they were due and they were not present. There was no phone call.
On my SIXTH visit I met with the manager who apologised profusely and concurred with my opinion that none of the toing-and-froing was necessary and he gave a complete refund by way of compensation.
Lo-and-behold, it transpired that there was a slight flaw in both lenses that caught the sunlight from the window as I worked at my PC.
I called the manager who was nothing short of terse with me as he insisted that they needed to have the glasses returned so as to inform the manufacturer as to the nature of the flaw.

I have no intention of returning to Specsavers for a 7th and 8th visit. They treat me as though my time and energy are at their disposal.
I have reported this through their online 'feedback' facility and received no response.
For sheer incompetence they are hard to beat!

ps
They don't respond to messages on their dedicated 'feedback' system. Easier, apparently, to get in touch via their social media sugar.
I have a suggestion for Specs: how's about you get in touch with me?
How's about you send me a pair of properly functioning specs via post or courier?
You have my measurements.
I do not want to listen to more garbage - just send me the glasses!

re Specs reply: the store in question is Tallaght. Fix it or don't, enough of the rubbish.

Matthew a delightful member of staff

I have been having issues with cloudy lenses and went back to specsavers Dawson street several months ago. The girl was friendly but I felt a bit fobbed off with no solution. However, I went back again yesterday and explained to the young man named Matthew what had happened and that my problem still persisted. He had me take a seat and had my glasses looked at and found out I needed to clean them a certain way as my method was not working. He gave me cloths and explained the no fog could make a difference. He was kind and went out of his way to not fob me off. He said to come back if any more problems and he would be happy to help. Happy to say the no fog works. He made me feel like my isssue was important and so was I as a customer. I hope your company appreciate staff like him as he made me feel like I mattered.

Do not bother ringing Specsavers

I must say everything was perfect in Specsavers The Crescent. The optician was so friendly and nice. The ladies that helped getting glasses and when picking up my glasses lovely. The reason I have only given one star was the telephone system trying to get a message re my order to the shop. I rang every day sometimes twice a day asking for The Crescent branch to get back to me. I even emailed to no avail. Your phone system is a waste of time

Money makers not great service

Money makers , solutions yes but with more money to be spend be AWARE if you buy designer brand frames, they do not have spares parts in case of damage ect… bought in October 2024 designer glasses , had an accident my glasses were bent, went to the shop in Gorey and a member of the staff straight them up but still not right, I asked to reemplace the parts in both sides as I’ve been in that situation before, turns out they don’t keep/have spares to repair them ( of course , that way you have to buy new frame , ok at 50% ) as the warranty only stands for 3 months and I’m over for a week I must to be the unluckiest person in the world that spend nearly 500€ in glasses and have to pay 100€ more because my warranty is expired a week ago . The staff always nice and polite but not really giving solutions or even bringing this to the manager attention to see if there is something they can do,they go by the book .
Spect savers is ok to buy their frames 2 for 1 that u pay little money and if it brakes it won’t hurt to buy another one ,but if u want good stuff better shop around privately might be worth a while and they probably have spares parts in case of damage .
Really disappointed, first time in 10 years leaving in Ireland I decide to do my test and glasses here and have such a bad experience ( will be the last too) from now onwards I’ll do them in my homeland be cheaper with better service.
If you are foreign and go to your country regularly or even once a year get them done there with your local stores where u probably be more content with results and service.
FAO THE BOARD having spares for especific frames such as springs cost nothing and is something easy to repair.
Definitely not shopping with them anymore.

AVOID TUAM BRANCH

Have been with Eyre square branch for years with no issues. Tuam branch has me going back and forward from October to January. Between wrong prescriptions and now having warped glasses “that sit well on my face” as stated by a member of staff but yet the glasses touch my eyelashes on my left eye while being miles away from my right . Concerning customer service and wish I took my business and money somewhere else many months ago.
