Best experience I've had with Spanish advisors

I spoke to a couple of advisors about moving to Spain, and my experience with Spence Clarke was hands down the best I've had.

My situation was a bit more complicated than most, and after dealing with other advisors, I was hearing mixed recommendations and left with more questions than answers.

But Michael Egan from Spence Clarke was able to clear up any questions I had, help me ignore some previously bad advice I received, and then give me a solid plan for moving to Spain.

The level of expertise and professionalism is unmatched when it comes to my experience with other lawyers, and fully recommend giving these guys a call for all your needs when it comes to living or doing business in Spain.

Friendly and knowledgeable team

After my husband died here in Spain, I was suddenly left without health insurance of my own.
I initially met with Claudia from Spence Clarke, who involved her colleague Eva Moreno to help me deal with the Spanish bureaucracy in order to get my entitlement for national healthcare back.
Eva was very professional and helpful. She even accompanied me to the Social Security in Marbella, to get things sorted, which they were eventually ( it took some patience on our part ), thanks to her help.
I would definitely recommend the friendly and knowledgeable team at Spence Clarke.

The best advisors I have ever had

The best advisors I have ever had. They are diligent, extremely well trained and reasoned in every step and advice they give us. 100% recommendable.

Our company was in the hands of other advisors and when we decided to move to Spence Clarke, they went through every last accounting entry, corrected all the errors and we started from scratch. With everything up to date.

Just at the level of customer guidelines and procedures, you know you're in good hands.

You pay a fair price not only because they have everything to do with taxes and payrolls under extreme control, but also because they know what they are doing with complete confidence at all times.

You can do better - hidden fees.

While they are knowledgeable and have good guides, I found their service process lacking and charging unacceptable.

They insisted on having my digital certificate and password - which I would never provide to someone. Thus I selected a provider who does not require this. They wanted to also wanted to charge me 145 euros more if I did not give it to them (this was never disclosed). Not to mention they wanted 45 euros to make an appointment for me to get the digital certificate.

Because expressed my displeasure with added fees and the digital certificate process, and asked for a refund (which I was not due as I did not pay, my mistake) they were very rude. There are many other providers select another that is upfront with fees and does not want your identity.

Reply from Spence Clarke & Co

I am sorry to learn of your disappointment. I should clarify that we provided you with a free estimate of taxes payable in Spain, with explanations to your situation followed up by a web meeting with one of our tax advisors.

None of these services were charged.

We also explained in writing the way our fees are structured, including the set-up costs for the first year as Spanish tax resident.

It is imperative for me to point out that no one at our office has insisted in you giving us your digital certificate and its password. We requested it as you had originally agreed with our terms and requested that we act for you.

However once you told us you were unhappy sending this, we offered you our fiscal representation service as an alternative.

Please note that, as we explained to you, the use of the digital certificates for our clients is compulsory, as it improves the quality of the work that we carry out for our clients. Using a DC for each of our clients does not only provide the extra security required for the correct submissions of the declarations to the tax office, but also allows us to check your history with the tax office and in an event of a tax inspection allows us to have access to your complete history with the tax office.

If a client does not want to provide the digital certificate, which is extremely unusual, we can use our tax office collaborator digital certificate for the submission, but this means that we would have to act as your fiscal representative, a serious responsibility for which we charge an annual fiscal representation fee.

With regards to the 45€ charge you mention for making an appointment, I presume you are referring to the fees we charge for obtaining a digital certificate. Again what you have stated is incorrect. This is a service we offer for obtaining digital certificate and not for merely making an appointment. It is an additional service we offer to our clients for their convenience. A few are quite happy to deal personally with this formality, and indeed, we explain the process for free. Most of our clients appreciate us making the arrangements instead of them having to obtain it themselves.

Either way, it is our firm´s right to establish our own procedures and fees for the different services we provide, and of course the client has the right to accept them by hiring our services or not. Incidentally, our fees are directly related to the time it takes to do the work.

I would like to emphasise, however, that we are very transparent about our fees and always provide an estimate before carrying out any job. Additionally, I would also like to remind you, that as you have said yourself, you have not yet made any payment to us, nor are we requesting any payment from you, as we have not yet done any work for you other than the free estimate and preliminary advice we offered at the beginning.

Our firm welcomes constructive criticism and always aims to improve; however, your review does not reflect reality and makes misleading statements.

To sum up, you have received from us a free income tax estimate, a free online consultation and a free follow up email and you haven´t actually engaged us to do any of our paid services, as following our usual procedure we have given you our fees before carrying out any job and you have decided to not continue with us.

I do hope that all goes well with the accountant you have now appointed and we remain at your service if needed in the future.

You're in safe and knowledgeable hands...

My husband and I were looking for an accountant to assist us navigating the Spanish tax minefield as well as explain the differences / things we need to take into account when structuring wills, all of the above being slightly more complicated as we own a limited company in the UK. Michael Egan from Spence Clarke was able to break down all our queries into individual requirements and help us put a high-level plan of action together of the things we need to get in place, so that we can continue our dream of living abroad. We've had a number of calls with various accountants and financial advisers and this is the first time that we felt we were speaking to someone who could truly advise us moving forward. We are now onboarding as clients and look forward to working with Spence Clarke for all our Spanish tax and legal requirements.

My old accountants messed up

My old accountants messed up, which in Spain means that you yourself are liable. I was penalized pretty severely by the tax office, suffered substantial losses (fines, forfeited reduced taxes, etc.) worth close to €10k.
I contacted Alistair Clarke and he helped me navigate this mine field of Spanish bureaucracy very well.
Spain is a socialist country, so if you are looking to create your own company or work as freelancer, there is a minefield of red tape you will need experienced accountants like S&C to help you navigate with the least amount of damages.

I highly recommend them and their various teams, all of whom are very capable, from personal to business accounting.

Fantastic accounting team - highly recommended

Fantastic accounting team, who were able to help me on two separate times I was working freelance in Spain. They offered in-depth knowledge of the Spanish tax system, and with their superb English were able to help me navigate some complex international tax issues.

Spence Clarke & Co - Muy bueno!

Spence Clarke & Co. helped me get set up as an autónomo (self employed person) and ever since they have made my quarterly and annual tax declarations as much of a delight as paying taxes can ever be. Their friendly and helpful staff have helped me with countless (probably stupid) questions with patience and professionalism. Their proactive approach to providing help and guidance with all the new processes and challenges thrown up by the pandemic and Brexit have been very much appreciated. They have sent me specific relevant information by email and I have also enjoyed reading the insightful articles they publish on their website.

This firm helped us very good when we…

This firm helped us very good when we had to change from accountant office. They managed to reclaim tax money that was taken from us by the tax authorities without valid reason. The company is accurate and responsive and act professionally. Although they are not cheap we would recommend this account firm as what is expensive if you get good service that also saves you money. Our experience so far is very good.

God & Bad

Update:
While this firm certainly didn't fulfill their duties when I used them, which ended up costing me quite the fine, I am updating my review to reflect the current situation. For unknown reasons, my address in the Spanish government had been reverted back to Spence Clarke after I left the country, and they were nice enough to inform me when they got some important letters addressed to me. I would assume they didn't have to inform me, which could have cost me I am sure. So while they never admitted any wrongdoing back in the day, even though it was clearly their fault and I had to pay up for their mistakes, these recent events do perhaps show that the company are on a better track, and therefor they deserve 3 stars rather than 1.
