Unable to cancel online. Lost $66 from unwanted charges.

Never wanted their mail subscription service, thought I was on the UPS site (my bad there). Somehow got signed up on a trial and then 3 months of charges on my bank account. When I noticed the charges on my card I was unable to find any way to cancel online.. I’m sure this is intentional!
Finally able to cancel using the 800 number (I think, won’t know for sure until the billing cycle has past).
I would stay away from this company!

I had their service for use with my dazzle software

I had their service for use with my dazzle software for $10 a month and it told me it can no longer be used with that subscription. When I called to inquire they said my service is now $40+ a month. In other words, they wanted to QUADRUPLE the price of my subscription. No thanks! Now I have to use the web-based service which can be inconvenient because I have to type in more information with each mailing.

some major scams going on with this company

The platform has numerous errors which seem to be included by design.

Such that a label won’t print …& can’t be reprinted & can’t be refunded without waiting multiple weeks. Thereby forcing you to spend more money.

Also you cannot just pay for your shipping you have to pay funds to your account in $20 increments and pay shipping through those invariably leaving you with a balance that’s stuck in limbo.

When I tried to issue a complaint over the phone to expedite correcting these billing issues the agent asked me to set up a remote link allowing him to control my computer. This seemed very odd for a simple reprint request & I could tell I was being taken down the scammers rabbit hole.

Decided to cut my losses & walk away

Reply from Stamps.com

Hi Jon,

Thank you for your feedback and we are very sorry to hear that had such a negative experience. In cases when the Reprint feature unable to be used, we would recommend requesting a postage refund. We apologize for the inconvenience. To clarify, postage funds are purchased from the USPS, not Stamps.com. Stamps.com is a neutral party in such transactions; we do not capture the funds for postage, and we do not make a margin on postage. We want to assure you that we do not keep or withhold any postage funds, and they are not held perpetually in limbo. The balance in your account remains yours and is used solely for purchasing postage. We never retain these funds for our own use. All postage purchases are passed directly through to the carrier, and we do not profit from or hold these amounts. Once you close an account, any remaining purchased postage will be released as a refund to you. All misprint refund requests must be sent to, reviewed, and approved by the USPS before being credited back to your Stamps.com postage balance account. When you purchase postage through our software, the postage is purchased directly from the USPS. We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this matter on your behalf. We’d be happy to address any concerns or issues you may have. You may email us at social@stamps.com. We hope we can restore your confidence in Stamps.com.

Canceled free trial and still tried to charge me a fee

Signed up for a free trial in February, then immediately cancelled (literally within 15 minutes) and was set to be converted to the subscription-free plan at the end of the trial. I have not even used the service AT ALL, but received an email yesterday saying they weren't able to charge my CC for the 20.99 subscription fee. My card had some unauthorized charges a couple of weeks ago and had been replaced, but there was no reason Stamps.com should have been trying to charge a fee. VERY SHADY. I have now completely closed my account because I refuse to support a company that would act so unethically. BEWARE if you sign up for the "free" trial.

ETA based on reply: so the “previous period” that you were trying to charge me for was THE FREE TRIAL! I literally switched to the subscription free plan 14 minutes after I signed up for the trial, and it was set to begin at end of trial. So what was the charge for?!?!?! SHADY.

Hi Jill,

Thank you for your feedback and we apologize for the inconvenience. Rest assured that we have cleared your outstanding fee. We show that you switched to the free plan. However, we bill at the end of the cycle for the cycle you started with. When a service plan change takes place, the new billing always goes into effect at the end of your next cycle. The charge you were seeing was for the old plan rate, the previous month of service. We always bill at the end of our cycles, so the charge you are seeing is for the previous cycle of service. If we can clarify further, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Paul

Do not trust they will cancel your trial subscription even if you tell them to

I’m not even sure why they were billing me a service fee. I signed up possibly for a trial so I could send a package to my son but certain I requested to stop it after I sent the package. I do not use it for business this was a one time situation where I had to send something once. I didn’t even realize they were charging me until the credit card expired and after several months I happened to see an email stating I owed them hundreds of dollars. I’ve told them to cancel it Now! Their response was what sounded like a threat that I would continue to get charged until I paid what they say I racked up after my credit card no longer worked. Seems like a good time to cancel any services if you are not getting paid for it and I’m NOT using it. This service might be good for a business but beware doing their trial. They will charge even after you thought you cancelled your trial subscription.

Long Delays in Calculating Postage.

I have used this service for more than a decade. Lately, though, it is frustrating because before printing any package label, it makes us wait several minutes while it verifies the postage rate. I don't pay employees to stare at a screen while a program requires ten times as long as just looking up the rate online at the USPS website.
Yes, I am using new computers and the latest version of the program.

It was a nightmare!

Update, 12 Mar 2026

Still no check in the mail.

Update:
Paul,
I have been trying to get the refund through customer service since January. There should not have even been a necessity for anyone at Stamps.com, or Auctane who owns most of the shipping sites, to "request" a refund of the money on my account. It is my money.
As you stated, the two transactions on Feb 13th for $1 were expressly for the purpose of determining if you had access to my account, and you did! You certainly had no issues taking the money out of my account instantaneously, but only with putting it back in, and I have never encountered a bank in all my years that has a problem with letting anyone putting money in.

Original post:
I wanted to send a late Christmas present, but I no longer drive, so I signed up with Stamps.com, thinking I could use their service to ship packages from home. They advertised reduced costs.
I should have done more research!
I never sent one package through them. While I was trying to, though, they withdrew their first monthly fee of $20.99 from my bank.
I packed up my box, weighed it and measured it. I then went to get a label for it. First I discovered that I needed an account balance to buy a label. I put in some money and then found that in order to use a service that has scheduled pick up service, my package would cost $56 to ship! 😱
That seemed like a lot. (I later figured out that $38 was added to the shipping amount because of the size of box I used.)
Problem: They place a limit of $50 on the account balance for new users. (?)
I had to call to get the limit removed. I then put more funds into my account to total $70.
After purchasing a label, I was not able to schedule pick up service, even though I specifically checked for that service when picking an option. That was the whole point of my signing up in the first place.
I went through this for a week. I finally gave up. I called the company to cancel my account and request a refund of my money.
It has been aggravation and frustration in trying to get back my money ever since. Aggravation and frustration are the only things I have received from this company! I did get the monthly fee back, but after 4 withdrawals, and 3 deposits for the monthly fee refund and two $1 set up transfers, they are saying that they can't deposit my refund for the account balance in my account and need to put in a request with their accounts department for a refund check to be sent to me like it's 1980!
I went and signed up with USPS for free. I split up the package into two of their priority mail boxes, and shipped the items for $31, with pick up service! I didn't need to put money into an account balance, or go through any hassles, and they now send me an email every morning telling me what mail is arriving that day.

Dear Lorri,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m truly sorry to hear how frustrating and disappointing this process was for you. I can see how being charged the monthly service fee before you were even able to send a package would add to that frustration. We understand your concerns about account limits. Security is a top priority at Stamps.com. To safeguard your personal information, our systems are equipped with multiple security precautions. We monitor our systems daily and use the latest in encryption technology to ensure that every transaction is safe.

We understand how important transparent pricing is, and it’s frustrating when costs end up being much higher than anticipated. Most concerning is that you were unable to schedule the pickup service after specifically selecting that option. Since that was the primary reason you signed up, we completely understand why going through this for an entire week without resolution would lead you to give up. We are sorry to hear that you had difficulties with our service. Our Free Tech Line is available 6AM to 6PM, Monday through Friday at 888-434-0055 to address any printing or technical issues our customers may be having. Our Email Support Team is also available to address such issues. We are sorry that we did not have the opportunity to assist you further with this issue.
Your experience is not the one we want any customer to have. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, confusion, and time this caused you.

Rest assured that your check is on last week's check run, and will be mailed as soon as possible. We apologize for the experience and appreciate your feedback.
Our records show that a credit card refund of $20.99 was successfully issued on 1/14/26. We also attempted to issue an additional refund of $70.00 on 2/14/26, but the system declined it. To ensure you still receive your funds, we initiated a refund via check.
There is a processing time for this, but rest assured that we do show that the refund request had been made for a check. We apologize for the experience. Please note that while we strive to issue refunds as quickly as possible, our procedures require standard processing time to ensure all payments are reviewed and approved accurately.

The $1.00 transaction(s) you are seeing is a temporary hold called an "authorization" or "auth" and will not go through as an actual charge. The $1.00 transaction is not a charge -- we were testing your card information to make sure it exists and is billable. This places the funds on a temporary hold while we wait for the credit card company to verify the information on file. The authorization drops off your credit account within 72 hours for most banks, although for some banks it could take up to 30 days.

Sincerely,

Paul

Hi Ariana,

Thank you for contacting Stamps.com. Rest assured that we have refunded $20.99 to you today. We apologize for any misunderstanding regarding our fee structure. We hear your concerns and we fully disclose our fees before any account can be created. We don't advertise or offer a free or pay-as-you-go service, and as disclosed and explained during registration, we do charge a $20.99 monthly fee after the 4-Week Trial Period. The fee we charge gives you access to services of the Post Office and the license to print official U.S. postage. It’s a flat fee that is not determined by how much postage you print. Stamps.com is a vendor licensed by the USPS, and all paid postage goes directly to the Post Office. In order to offer our standard service, we do charge a monthly subscription fee, as stated in our Terms of Service: www.stamps.com/conditions
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and the experience.

Sincerely,
Paul

Buyer Beware: Recurring Charges With No Benefit

I signed up for Stamps.com because I wanted a simple, occasional option for small shipments that did not justify Priority Mail. I already use Pirate Ship, but thought Stamps might make sense for certain USPS services. I added postage funds assuming it would work as an on demand account. That seemed reasonable since I prepaid.

What I did not realize is that they also put me on a monthly subscription. I never agreed to anything I understood to be a recurring charge, and I certainly did not need whatever “benefits” the subscription supposedly provides. I never printed a label. I never used the service.

Months later I noticed recurring charges on my credit card statement. Canceling was not straightforward. I asked a basic question. What exactly was I paying for? Instead of answering it, support kept opening and closing tickets without resolving anything. When I requested a refund for the unused monthly fees, those tickets were closed as well.

In the end I closed the account. They kept the postage balance I had deposited and told me it was non refundable.

There may be use cases where this model works for someone. It did not for me. I will stick with Pirate Ship. No subscription fees, just discounted USPS and UPS rates and far less hassle.

Update (responding to Stamps.com reply - Feb 2026):

Thank you for your reply, Paul. I appreciate that the $8.10 postage balance was eventually refunded after I had to chase it, though it certainly wasn’t automatic or obvious at the time of closure.
That said, the deeper problem remains. Your company still lacks any real transparency. You surreptitiously enroll new users into a monthly subscription fee that provides zero value for occasional, light users like me. There are no monthly billing emails that clearly state “Your card is being charged $X today for the Stamps.com subscription.” Not one. If you genuinely believed in the value of your service, you would send those reminders proudly every month. Instead, the model appears designed to fly under the radar, hoping customers won’t notice the recurring charges.
I’m sharing this review and update for the benefit of other potential customers, not as a personal note to you or Stamps.com. For anyone reading this: please read every line of the fine print, set calendar reminders to check your statements, and strongly consider skipping Stamps.com altogether.
I’ll stick with Pirate Ship: no sneaky subscriptions, no hidden fees, just straightforward discounted rates and far better transparency.

Hi Salim,

We sincerely apologize for the negative and frustrating experience. Thank you for your feedback. Rest assured that the postage balance was automatically refunded to you upon account closure in the amount of $8.10. When an account is closed, any remaining purchased postage is refunded. We are sorry to hear that there was an impression that the purchased postage was nonrefundable.

We have reached out via email to assist you further with these concerns for you. Thank you so much for your feedback and please rest assured that we will be reviewing the interactions in question. Rest assured we will address the matter accordingly. We take these matters very seriously.

We strongly believe in the value of our service and we always want to do everything that we can to ensure our customers have a positive experience when working with Stamps.com. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

We apologize for any misunderstanding regarding our fee structure. We hear your concerns and we fully disclose our fees before any account can be created. To best serve our customers, we provide the terms for Stamps.com accounts during the registration process. Stamps.com accounts cannot be created without customers indicating that they’ve read the terms and conditions. We believe in full disclosure, which is why we provide our terms ( http://www.stamps.com/conditions ) on a single webpage during the registration process.

During registration for a Stamps.com account, we explain that your credit card will not be charged unless you continue past the four-week trial or buy additional postage and Online Store products.

In addition, immediately after sign-up, new customers are sent a Welcome Email with the same terms outlined, along with information about the monthly flat rate fee if you choose to continue past the trial month.

We apologize for the negative experience and if we can assist further, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Paul

Like many others this company scams users.

Like many others this company charged our credit card without authorization. They refuse to send a refund and so now we will have to refute the charge with our credit card company. They act like they’re not aware of what’s going on but clearly it’s intentional and part of their business model. A class action lawsuit is likely coming.
