Stevenage is not for the people.

Lived in the town my entire life, been on the housing register for over 4 1/2 years and not had a single percentage of progression. Been homeless in their town for a couple of years now and they simple advise me to stop seeing my disabled son so that I can go into a house share. I'm 36 years old and being treated like I am 18. Response times to emails is weeks long and even when they do respond, it bares no relation to the questions I have asked. Since being on the homeless register I have both been in full time employment and also jobless and in neither of those situations did they want to help. I am currently in a sofa surfing position and have been for 2+ years on my nans sofa, unfortunately she passed away in June 2025, I'm still on her sofa. The council have already advised that they will make me homeless.

Their slogan is 'The heart of a town lies in it's people' but this is in no way a reference to Stevenage and their council.

I don't recommend living in this town, especially as it's now becoming an over priced commuter town for London rather a town for the people of Stevenage.

Warning to Other Drivers

I want to share my experience to warn others in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

I was driving to work and taking my kids to school when the council’s grass-cutting team was working right next to a busy road. The operator was facing the traffic and standing very close to the cars.

As I drove past, a stone was thrown up by the strimmer and **smashed my rear passenger window**. The operator immediately admitted what happened, apologised, and gave me a form to contact the council for repairs.

After weeks of emailing back and forth, the council passed my case to their insurance, who said it was just an “accident” and denied any responsibility. They even told me I could seek legal advice but reminded me that a similar case in court was unsuccessful. I was quoted **£400** to fix the window — damage that was **clearly not my fault**.

I had a child sitting right next to that window. What if that stone had gone through the glass and hurt them?

It’s truly disappointing and worrying that the council won’t take responsibility for damage caused by their own work. This is a **serious safety issue** and a **bad practice** that needs to be addressed before someone gets seriously injured.

Repair fob off again fix at last

So we ask for a repair on a foot path ,the stone window sills and bin storage on are council property. This was done in January this year we phone in February regarding this and followed up with a complaint by email. We have rung today to be told that there is outstanding repair. So we ask to start a stage 1 complaint and was told we have to do this on line. Then you go on line and it says that custermer service can do this .when challenged we where left on hold.we have found the complaint form and now doun a complaint. Under the whitpaper are you not soppos to make your complaints easy if so you need to look at this .also as the repair from January says completed maybe we shod ask the H&S to come out under Riddor as one of the repair was to a upstairs concrete window sill that fell and missed my head by inches ,is this not a risk to person's
Yours Mr P Dsy

So just a update .after having to ask for the repair that was not done to now be clased as a complaint under housing white paper, we had the repair doue, and the repair is ok will look better when I get round to painting so the diffrent colour morter used don't look out of place . If the repair was done when it was soppos to 1st be done maybe there be 5 stars now and no need for the 1st review.

Recently I reported a incident of fly…

Recently I reported a incident of fly tipping online, I gave clear information of the address where the incident happened, I received a response saying someone would visit the address. The address they said they would be calling at was completely different from the address I gave them. The situation remains unresolved. Another example of Stevenage Borough Council being useless.

Inept and Vindictive Council

Falsely accused me of abandoning a vehicle twice in four years despite being told that it was cloned. No apology; no attempt to find the real culprit. Appallingly rude staff; unable to change their procedures to account for cloned vehicles. So far, refuse to give material evidence (like images) to support their claims, or VIN numbers. In a world of cloned vehicles (over 24000 vehicles registered to DVLA from 2018 to July 2021), the only recourse Stevenage Borough Council give you to prove your innocence is to show you passed the vehicle on, meaning that if a vehicle has been cloned with your VRN and dumped on their land, you are guilty regardless.

I live in an assisted living bungalow…

I live in an assisted living bungalow my shower is broken, I have no bath, not that I could use it, they can't come to fix it for a week. They asked if I had something wrong that warranted me to shower daily lol, I mean do they think I only shower once a week, what is the point in being in assisted living and paying extra might I add for support if they can do this to someone. In this weather too. Where is duty of care and human rights gone

Stevenage Council are disgraceful

The council have left the main access door and entry system to our tower block in a state of disrepair for 8 months. This has left the building open to any person day and night.
The doors to the service rooms such as the Boiler house and mains water pump room, have been broken into and services interfered with causing loss of hot water. People have been sleeping on the stairs/ rubbish rooms and in the service rooms. In one incident a couple were having sex in the lobby area.
The council aren't interested in the problems this causes tenants especially those with disabilities and have total disregard for the Equality Act. Must rate as one of the worst in the country

Some areas are good

Stevenage Borough Council receives a degree of criticism, in a lot of areas. It is not often that they get praised.
I would like to take this opportunity to give The Lettings, Independant living/Sheltered Housing and Voids teams a HUGE shout out and to express our appreciation for all the work everyone has done getting our new home ready for us to move in within the estimates provided to us.
The quality of the work completed getting the property ready for us to occupy is nothing short of Phenomenal. Communication was excellent and timely and advice given was accurate.
From viewing the property to signing of the tenancy agreement was completed very quickly and every single one of our questions and requests were answered positively.
Every single person who we communicated with were extremely professional, polite and friendly.
We simply cannot thank them enough and we are very much looking forward to moving in and we know we will be very happy in our new home.
So finally. THANKYOU Stevenage Borough Council.

I'm tired of making calls and complains…

I'm tired of making calls and complains the way councils groundworks mess up my drive, which I tidy up and clean all the time, every time there grass cutting carried out by the council, the council vehicles driven on my drive, the cut grass is blown onto my drive and my cars and underneath my garage door. there's inconvenience caused further on with the grass on my drive is causing a health and safety hazard which is slippery. Cant write complaints on the provided customer service email on the website cos I would like to post pictures for evidence.

poor customer service

Stevenage council state that emails received from a Tennant should be responded to by 10 working days unfortunately you have to contact them for a response only to be told that the person you wish to speak to is unavailable . on one occasion I finally got a reply after 6 months and then the information was not as I requested in my original email. the council appear to be more concerned about the town centre regeneration than addressing the poor customer service issues.
