Unfair EU Plan: Passengers Without Luggage Forced to Pay for Others

It is deeply troubling to see an organization that claims to support consumer interests also backing the EU initiative to make checked luggage a mandatory part of every ticket.
Airlines only have one way to recover that cost — through higher ticket prices.
That means passengers who travel without luggage will end up paying for those who do.
In simple terms: under this initiative, passengers without luggage will have to subsidize those who bring it.
It’s hard to imagine a clearer example of an unfair policy — and surprising that Taenk would support it.

We are not supporting checked luggage as a mandatory part of every ticket. We are arguing that hand luggage should be included in the ticket price. Before covid this was a standard practice among almost all European airlines. Also, this is in accordance with the EU Court of Justice which already in 2014 ruled that “carriage of hand baggage cannot be made subject to a price supplement, provided that it meets reasonable requirements in terms of its weight and dimensions and complies with applicable security requirements”.
