THE BEST SCALE EVER

THE BEST SCALE EVER! As a wrestler who was constantly having to make weight, my small “Johnny Craig” scale would be dead on the money, and would be exactly the same weight as professional grade Tournaments scales. As well as the body fat features being precise for my Physicals, it strangely worked that well. It’s never failed me growing up, and still is helping me reach my fitness goals. The durability has been insane over the years, Never having to change the batteries since I received it on my 11th birthday in 2013. It’s my oldest and most reliable possession.
I felt the urge to applaud the craftsmanship that rest below my feet, and a Job well done , and thank you.

I have the Tanita RD 953 since 2022

I have the Tanita RD 953 since 2022. For a while it was working perfectly- I had the opportunity to compare the measurements against profesisonal endocrinologist BIAS instruments ... But since 2025, cant say precisely the date it started to:
- error when trying to see results list needing to turn off the app and restart app
- measuring in a chaotic total wrong datga compared to same data measured by my endocrinologist- same one I always had.
I had the tanita with me in the medical office so we made the comparison in the same location every time.
It measures chaotically. Scarry to see that overall fat went from 38% to 47% and water exploded from 34% to 39.6% in 24 hours.
Tanita FAQ rush in explaining fat % may see high if hydrations went low. Guess what, Both scaled up... so?

Admitt it guys... you have issues with the software plus sensors after a couple of years become obsolete. Sorry... I may have used better terms but cant match any.

I wont but it again and I strongly advise anyone against investing in a Tanita RD 953. It is not able to provide.
Maybe in his past years of glory Tanita built a name. But unfortunately is no longer rising to the expectations.

It’s clear that you’ve been thorough in your use and comparisons, including in a clinical setting, and we value that kind of detailed feedback.

We understand your concern, especially when you see sudden changes in metrics like body fat and water percentages. These fluctuations can be frustrating, and although BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) is a well-established and widely used method in both clinical and consumer settings, it is sensitive to several physiological and environmental factors. These include hydration, recent food or fluid intake, hormonal cycles, environmental and skin temperature, and time of day. Even with consistent use, these variables can influence results, which is why BIA is best used to track trends over time rather than to focus on individual daily readings.

You also mentioned technical frustrations with the app, including error messages and having to restart it to view results. That’s not the experience we want for anyone. Our teams do regularly release updates to improve compatibility with new phone operating systems and address bugs. But if something is not working as it should, we definitely want to hear about it and help you resolve it.

We’d also like to respond to your comment about the sensors and software becoming obsolete after a few years. TANITA devices, including the RD-953, are built with durability and long-term use in mind. The sensors (electrodes) and software have no fixed expiry date and the core BIA technology itself does not degrade with normal use. That said, if a hardware issue has developed, it’s something we would want to investigate and support you with.

It’s disheartening to read that your trust in the product and the brand has been affected, especially given TANITA’s long-standing reputation. Please know that we are committed to standing by that reputation and to assisting you, even when things don’t go as expected.

Not recommended - warranty problem

Not recommended. Analyzer for several thousand Polish zloty. After 1.5 years of PROPER use ACCORDING TO PURPOSE AND INSTRUCTIONS, the top insulation of the cable along its entire length cracked. Tanita refuses to recognize the warranty, coming up with new possible reasons for its damage over and over again, instead of admitting that the material is of poor quality. It is shameful for an international company with such specialized equipment to treat its customers in such a way. I should add that the service has admitted that I am not the only person with this problem. They support the mechanical failure every time.

Since one week data of a RD-545 do not…

Since one week data of a RD-545 do not sync from app to tanita servers. so no Pdf-sheet can be created. They only say "server problems"
Every time to log out from account and for the text measurement to log in again is a workaround but no solution of the problem.

Great scales but the App needs improvement

I’ve always used Tania scales as they are a good brand. That last one I had lasted over 10 years. Recently I upgraded to the expensive RD-953 as it was meant to connect to my smartphone so that I can track my weight loss. Except it doesn’t…. ! The first time it connected to Bluetooth and my weight was transferred to my phone. Now, each time I use it I have to pair my smartphone with the device. This is so backward and frustrating. The scales are great but please sort out the App so that it’s fit for purpose.

I bought a RD 901 (now updated to RD 953).
After a few months I realised the figures except my weight and BMI were inaccurate and varied a lot from day to day. I contacted Tanita Europe several times within the warranty period. I sent a lot of documentation so they could see what I wrote was correct. Each time they answered do this or do that. But I used it correctly.
They should have asked me to return it and sent me a new one or offered me a big discount on the updated one. Now I have an expensive scale as the weight part still works correctly.

I'm a gadget freak in everything from cars (Tesla) to computers, smart home equipment, smartphones, smart banks, and now a body analysis scale. I have researched the market really well and really many hours and quite early I fell (after a few hours) I found through a lot of reviews Tanita. I was more and more impressed the more I found out, functions, data, appearance, precision and then it was Japanese which in our country is totally reliable and usable and innovative for decent money, in fact a toyota within scales in all respects. I thought......... Partly, after a really long search of all weights and all the different features, I found out that there were some really negative shortcomings and defects. First I found out that they are not on wifi (as the cheapest ones dont have that in general, only thing is… this is not a cheap one!), really not innovative that you have to make sure your phone is nearby, and if you forget it in the garden, it's out for it. In addition to that, fortunately I also read on trustpilot that Tanita REQUIRES that you share your private data and measurements with the company. It had never gone in any European country (it's actually illegal to make it a requirement and you can't choose not to give Them your personally private data, and why are they egen interested in knowing my wight and souch??? Tanita is NOT to trust!!) and no people will accept it unless they hadn't read the fine print and then accept it anyway because it has been expensive and cant be returned again after use. And I who thought I had found a Toyota within weights, and so we are actually on a mix between a Lada without security and an otherwise nice sporty but useless Alfa Romeo. Always CHECK details, and always trustpilot everyone. I always advertise widely on social media about my choices in smart things, and I thought it was going to be the one, and then it turned into another which, unfortunately, does not contain quite the same qualities Tanita does have, but then lacks or requires two completely critical stuff! a pity for me and for others that it stops there at those things....

It is indeed true that our scales which can be used with the free My TANITA Healthcare app do not work with WIFI, but with Bluetooth. Therefore, it is indeed important that the scale is within 5m of the phone or tablet to establish the connection. However, if your device is not nearby, the measurement results can be read on the scale's own display and if you did weigh on your profile, the measurement will also be stored on the scale under your profile.

I would also like to come back to the sharing of private data and measurement results. We at TANITA do not have access to this. This data is stored in the Cloud, so if you lose your phone, this information will not be lost, and you can access your results on a new phone when you log into your account.

Also, if you buy something online from us in the web shop, you can always return the scale within 30 days, used or unused. If you have any questions about this, we will be happy to help you. You can mail us at info@tanita.eu.

Planned obsolescence

Don´t buy any Tanita scales…
Though quite an expensive product, my scale doesn´t work properly anymore. I´ve had it for four years and after an app “update” it is no longer able to hold any measurements in it´s memory (gone from ten till NONE) and can no longer transfer the data to the app as it used to.
It is what it is: Planned product obsolescence.

Terrible customer service

I purchased a set of bathroom scales via Amazon which stopped working just outside the 12 month Amazon warranty. Accordingly, I contacted Tanita's head office in Amsterdam but 'Marcela' refused to accept that a screenshot of my Amazon account showing full details of my having purchased the scales from Amazon, was sufficient proof of purchase. She wanted a traditional 'invoice' which course I did not have and unbelievably refused to give me the necessary documentary authorisation to return the scales to Tanita in Amsterdam despite my repeated requests.
(There is nowhere to return defective Tanita items to in the UK which a number of people have complained about on Amazon). This is probably illegal.
Amazon advised me that a screen shot of my account showing the purchase definitely was proof of purchase and when my electronic toothbrush stopped working Phillips, which has excellent customer service, were perfectly happy to accept a screen shot of my Amazon account. Moreover, Phillips also had a UK address to send the defective product to. I am therefore £54.99 out of pocket thanks to the spectacularly obstructive and unreasonable attitude of Tanita's 'customer service' department in Amsterdam. I was really shocked by my treatment.

Many thanks to Tanita for responding to my review today, 12 days after it was posted.

I have many misgivings about Marcela's approach to customer service (bearing in mind that Tanita is a Japanese company and having been to Japan normally customers are treated most helpfully and with the utmost courtesy) but one thing is for certain Marcela was not an impostor - her email address was 'at' tanita.eu!
Before I deal with the list that Tanita has sent me could Tanita confirm that they will after all accept proof that the bathroom scales were purchased from Amazon?Otherwise I will be back to 'square one'.
As an addendum to the above, I am pleased to report that Tanita have now apologised for their poor customer service in the past and replaced the scales. The new person with whom I had contact, could not have been more helpful. There seems to have been 'regime change' at Tanita's customer service department!
