The restaurant is ok if you're retired…

The restaurant is ok if you're retired and can spend all day hanging around waiting for food or coffee. If like me or anyone that works for a living and you have been granted a lunch break anything under two hours just won't cut it here..Lunch time i spent 40 mins in a que waiting to be served by what seemed like completely incompetent staff that just can't cope. Then after finally getting your order in you'll wait another forty minutes before receiving anything hot. You will need half an hour to eat it so expect at least 2 and half hours for lunch with the slowest service I've ever encountered..If you only get an hour for lunch or less forget it you'll be sacked by the end of the week for lateness after lunch break if you rely on this place for hot food . Great if you're retired and have a spare 4 hours to kill at lunchtime anyone else that works forget it.

Love Old Barn restaurant

Love Old Barn restaurant, however, fish and chip lunch not as nice as other visits. Fish was watery and no flavour and it was overwhelmed by too much batter.

Father’s day

I have retracted a bad review thanks to the very lovely and helpful team. We were invited back and had a lovely breakfast cooked to perfection and presented well. Thank you to Katie and Terrie in management for turning the experience around and giving us a second chance at my husband’s first Father’s Day.

Superb advice from Alfie

I went to South Downs Nursery because I have those black flies in my 23 house plants. I spoke to Alfie who was a veritable font of knowledge and helped with all my possible solutions and actually came up with a better one. Thank you so much Alfie, I will be coming back again with any gardening/plants needs.

Refused even a credit note and treated like thieves

Purchased lights at Christmas. The box said warm lights. When opened at home, they were actually golden light. They are also faulty. We were very busy at Christmas and only had chance to return the lights in the new year.
Attempted to return them to the store today. Unfortunately we didn’t have a receipt but could show proof of purchase via a bank account statement.
We hung around for an hour whilst the lady serving us tried to look for our transaction on “her computer” only to be refused even a credit note.
The lights cost £9.99. We had just spent £25 pounds in their coffee shop.
Living locally, we visit regularly however I will not step foot in there again. Horrendous customer services. We felt like thieves, we were even stopped on the way out and asked if we had paid for the lights. Disgusting.

Voucher that doesn't seem to be worth anything

They told us to download the app as they have a 50% promotion. So we did that, got few bits and went to the till to pay for it. He scanned the voucher and said you can't use this, it's only for customers. I said well, we are customers as we are buying a few things... that makes us customers. He said no. So I asked when do we become a customer, he responded tomorrow... lol

Imagine you registered for Amazon and they said thanks but you can't buy anything till tomorrow...
What a rediculous idea by tates. Shameful in fact

Tates South Downs Nursery.

Tates South Downs Nursery.
I had been looking for a particular Rhubarb variety and found it online at South Downs Nursery.
As yet, they do not have a Click and Collect facility but a great conversation with Mark in the sales team enabled me to collect a reserved plant a couple of days later.
Very pleased with the quality of the plant and at a good price too. We will be back!

£12.99 for a sliver of quiche!

The garden centre (Paradise Park at Newhaven) is great. The products and staff are second to none. In the past the cafe had been a bit slow in serving because they were understaffed, but they've sorted that out and there are no lengthy queues or uncleared tables any more. HOWEVER, today my friend and I ordered one of the day's specials, quiche with new potatoes and salad. When it arrived we were shocked at the size of the slice of quiche - 1.5 inches across the crust at the back and my friend's was even smaller - with salad and new potatoes for..... £12.99!!! It should have been called salad with new potatoes and quiche, based on the proportions of the components. Shocking and not 'special' at all, unless you count the price. We were so disappointed, especially since the food, portion sizes and prices are usually so good here. There was no point mentioning it to the staff, as portion control is not within their remit, but feel that a 'sample' plateful should be displayed in the chiller cabinet so the customer can decide if they feel it's worth the price. 🤷‍♀️

Great garden centre

Great garden centre - much cheaper than others nearby. Coffee shop is great. Can't really ask for more from a garden centre.

Shame About The Bags

Was looking forward to visiting this garden centre in Hassocks, unfortunately l had to limit the amount l could buy once at the checkout as the only bags to carry the plants home in were a flimsy polythene bag or a paper bag (not everyone drives a car) so opted for the larger paper bag which split after ten minutes walking & all the plants had fallen out of the bottom onto the pavement, so disappointed & a shame that a bag dictates the type & amount of plants you can buy. This is the only reason l have given two stars otherwise a lovely garden centre. shame about the bags, better robust bags suitable for a garden centre please, we are not carrying cornflakes!

This is the Hassocks one.

This is the Hassocks one.
The cafe deserves a specials mention vast quantities and great tastes. I don't know how they do it for the money especially their Christmas lunch.
Their light bites are far from light even their Welsh rarebit it two whole slices of bread with a very generous layer of cheese on top, delicious with just enough mustard to taste but not overwhelming.
The only downside is that on Saturdays there is a vast queue and you may have to wait for a table.
